  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

VF | Brook's APU Battery Plates [IDX & AB, REDmote charging cable!]

The cable on any APU plate is both user adjustable and user replaceable. You can shorten or lengthen the cable to whatever length suits your mounting choice or desired slack. Want to mount it farther away from the camera? Just pick your length and buy the cable. There is a connector to release the cable inside of the APU - no soldering required. Just unscrew the IDX plate, disconnect the old cable and connect the new one. Pick your length, clamp it in place and screw the IDX plate back on. It's super simple and it means that the cable can be the perfect length for your rig.

This alone is a really great idea, Brook.

Also love the cap screw safety lock.

I presume that, as long as you have the correct cable length, these battery plates can also be mounted anywhere you have a Shuttle Mount attached. Yes ... or does the plate require the four adaptor module connection points to lock in securely?

Will we see an Anton Bauer Gold Mount battery plate in the near future?

Looks great Brook.

Just wondering, do you have any pics with a top handle attached to the EPIC? I have the RED Sliding top handle on SWAT rails (mounted "classically", not overhanging the lens)... and it looks like there may not be enough clearance for the APU plate with a Red Brick battery on it. The handle seems to get in the way. Even if it does fit (it may) you'd probably have to unscrew the handle to change batteries.

The obvious solution is a SWAT rail riser like this:

to raise handle up a bit. I've already got a couple of these on order.

This might be a stupid question but this plate is compatible with all V-Mount batteries so will it work with Red Bricks?

Yes, it works with all normal V-mount batteries including the RED Bricks.
Very, very nice. Definately ordering one of those ! I also like the fact that you can change the cable length so easily. It would have been great to have a second P-Tap though, you never have enough of those !
Just one question, does it transmit the battery status to the camera ? (or does the Epic handle this differently than the Red One ?)

Don't worry, these are only the first two APU plates. There will be some additional, more advanced plates in the future.

The Epic has a built-in voltmeter to judge battery status, so any battery can be used in an informed manner. No need for the "percentage" circuitry anymore, voltage is definitely the way to go on the Epic.

What's the ETA on AB mount?

I'll post renderings tomorrow. It should be maybe a week or two behind if I had to guess [guess].
DEFINITE purchase. Compatible with V-mount, meaning Red Bricks, yea?

Exactly.

Nope, the plate requires the four-pronged adapter interface. We originally drew up a design that would use the "Epic" V-mount on the back of the camera [which would mean it'd work with the shuttle] but decided against it because we were not sure how much weight the V-mount on the camera was designed to hold. It's all fun and games until somebody rips the back of their camera off!

I'll post a rendering of the APU-AB tomorrow and will hopefully be shipping it in the next few weeks, just after the APU-IDX.

Brook, can you tell us the exact depth of the APC battery plate?

By my measurements I'll need at lease 3/4" (or 2 cm) to clear my top handle (in it's most forward config). It looks like it will work but i just want to make sure.

See attached photo.

I'm liking it a lot, Brook. But have to ask... Can the APU plate be attached to the rear of a camera that has the RED moule adapter plate installed, or even at the rear of a module. That would be the deciding factor, for me, between your APU and the RED BackPack...

Yes, there will be an interface adapter plate to enable exactly that. That's how I plan to use mine!

Do we know if the Red Module Adapter and each new Red Module has the four "Adapter Module Connection Points" like those on the back of the EPIC brain? I guess Tim Whitcomb might know after test driving the Quad Battery Module.

No, it is a different physical connection. The Interface Adapter is a small plate that will adapt the quick release system on the APU to the module interface. Then just choose which length cable you want to clear whatever accessories you have mounted on the camera and you're in business.

Will the monitor clear a red brick in this configuration and be able to swivel in every direction?

Yes, there will be an interface adapter plate to enable exactly that. That's how I plan to use mine!

Love it!

Cool. That was going to be my next question -- an adapter plate. Alrighty, then. Will probably have to order one.

Well Done Brook. Will order one.

Awesome work Brook! Please make enough of them so we don't have to deal the backorder inconvenience that is currently plaguing accessories from RED... Thanks to third parties like you guys we are able to use our EPICs properly! :)
