  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

There's a ton of interest in Scarlet - thus a huge amount of speculation about Red's November 3rd announcement. I haven't posted on this thread, but I've been reading it all along with a smile. IMO some speculations here are relatively in the ball park, while a lot of the rest of it is way out in left field.

As someone with a ground floor background with Red, I'll just say this:
Speculate all you want to bide the time - but everyone just be prepared for some really incredible offerings from Red on November 3rd.

I see no reason for either/or predictions: what about a release of the 3 original Scarlet ideas? 2/3 3K Scarlet with interchangeable lens for ~$3.5K, 2/3 3K Scarlet Fixed for ~$6.5K, S35 5K Scarlet with interchangeable for ~$13K... I think there will at least be two of these that you'll be able to order on Nov. 3. The test footage from June (just four months ago) was either a ruse to keep the competition uninformed or it was from a real Scarlet that Red still plans to market. The surprise I think will be the Epic-S becoming a Scarlet-S again and ready to ship.

Maybe a ProRes module in the mix too?

What you say is true about the last announced news from RED regarding Scarlet's specs: 2/3rds. fixed lens, ~$6K.

However, I guess I'm contending that RED always viewed that configuration as a killer indie filmmaking camera. I don't recall them touting any other use for it, although they fully well know many people will be interested in that config for other purposes like shooting events and so on. I've only ever heard the non-cinema uses for this camera touted by non-RED employees on this forum who, I think, assumed a non-cinema focus for the 8x Fixed because of the 2/3" sensor (popular in ENG, corporate and event shooting) and fixed lens.

If I'm wrong, please point me to where someone from RED talked up the non-cinema uses for this configuration.

In the meantime, check out this video of Ted at Sundance 2011 talking about the 8x Fixed Scarlet. Please watch the whole thing but pay particular attention to 1:20, 4:38, and 5:30 - 6:40.

I'm still learning towards the thought that Scarlet will contain a new S35 sensor built in or as an option. The competing camera landscape has changed drastically in the last 365 days and will continue to do so.

All other camera specification speculation aside, an interesting discussion to perhaps have when it comes to those who desire a S35 sensor or a 2/3rds sensor is:

-If Scarlet is released with a S35 sensor will it effect the purchase decision of the people who want a 2/3rds sensor?
-If Scarlet is released with a 2/3rds sensor will it effect the purchase decision of the people who want a S35 sensor?

This information would be useful for the Red team as well, but I bet they already know what they are doing :)
However, if there is an option to purchase different "brains" with different sensor/format sizes this pretty much eliminates this discussion.
 
Again I think folks are asking entirely too much from RED -- this is not a DSLR it's a cinema camera ... professional cinema camera = more money, 6K, my old paperweight of a 1D MK IV costs 5K still ... Scarlett will probably be 10K fixed minimum with a few extras in there.

There are so many speculations and guessing... what if canon postponed its announcement? Then what?

I am more interested in the 2/3rds sensor for my needs. If nothing changes I'll be buying it as soon as it is added to the store. I love everything that I have heard about Scarlet up to this point. If the hardware is different I may still purchase it but can't say for sure until I know what it is.

On the other hand....I have a Sony FS100 which is pretty cool, but I would exchange it for a scarlet anytime.
I really hope the scarlet can compete with the FS100s lowlight capabilities! Otherwise that would be a bigger tradeoff for me than losing shallow DOF. I downloaded some red one MX files and compared them. Unfortunately the crappy FS100 is a little better @ high ISOs than the One MX. :shocked: (edit: Only regarding noise of course!)

Are you considering the FS100's built-in noise reduction? Easy to match if you apply noise reduction to M-X, and in situations where the camera is exposed properly, noise is rarely an issue any way.
 
I didn´t consider noise reduction.
But it´s a super35 chip with only 2,x MP. It must be more light sensitive.

Of course your right. My FS100 barley delivers 1080 so even when I heaviliy use a noise filter on a 3k image, it may degrade more to 2k, but it will still be more resolution than the FS.
 
Just want to check with everyone…

The idea with the Scarlet announcement is that once you read the specs and you want to pull the trigger that you can order on the spot?

I thought the “no dicking around statement” refers to the fact that the units are ready to ship? Right? First few however many thousand right? Or am I totally wrong on that? I’m assuming after that that a lot of Scarlet’s are on back order? Like few months-six months or what…?

Any ideas about how this is supposed to “go down”?

I'd like to hear another pep talk as well. Jim seems like the type that really thrives under competitive circumstances, and this Canon engagement is only going to make Red shine brighter as a result. I've only been a forum lurker for a few months, but I really enjoy the top-down communication here at Red, even if it is necessarily cryptic due to competitive pressures.

What would be awesome would be a few lengthier bits of Scarlet footage, perhaps down-sampled to 1080P. Then we could gawk at some footage while still maintaining the suspense of whether it'll be a 3K or 4K cam.

GH2 pixel-peeping is fun and interesting (I love my GH2!!), but I'd really like to see a nice grade on some digital S16 Red footage :yesnod:
 
Just an interesting thought but if RED is taking orders in a few weeks but not advising people to start loading their RED accounts with wire transfers... does that mean whatever we buy will be able to fit on a credit card?

Ive never bought anything RED before, looking to get a scarlet and an Epic S (if its still on the roadmap). How does it work? Newbie question I know...
