  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Oh for sure... I love the form factor and would love to see a camera like this. I just mean if it's $15k, it would be a fail. Because with DigicV... any DSLR from now on should have more than enough power for a 4:2:2 codec. It would be a fail because it would signify an obvious up-sell and low-ball on their part.

there is no way to think in a canon for actual cinematography using nothing less then raw formats. MAYBE if they release a camera that use compression but have raw outputs, then MAYBE they can get some attention. Other then that... RED ALL THE WAY

We shall see :)

Been beta testing, now :yesnod: have you? You can tell us, we'll keep quiet. :yesnod:

Heck, come to think of it - nobody'd even notice. Assuming no more fixed lens, anything Scarlet could be field tested in something which looks like an EPIC on the outside, Scarlet on the inside.

Nope. I have not touched a Scarlet yet ... but I'm sure looking forward to it :)

???? Scarlet is a totally different market, it'll have no effect on the low cost S35 buyers

Are you guys sure about that?

Like I stated earlier, from RED's perspective, they were producing a cinema camera that rivaled the quality of cameras used to make the likes of Avatar, the Star Wars prequels, Spy Kids, Zodiac, etc. and was a suitable replacement for 16mm film for a fraction of the cost.

Their attitude was, if you can't tell a story on a sensor the size of the one that made some of the biggest movies of all time and last year's Oscar winner for Best Picture, the Hurt Locker, you're probably not in the right line of work.

The indie filmmaker was clearly an intended target. I don't understand why people insist on dismissing that.

The original specs for Scarlet (seen below) detailed two 2/3" cameras and two S35 cameras. The removable 2/3" lens version was even called 2/3" Cinema.

I know Jim stated they were moving the S35 version to the Epic line and calling them Epic-S. However, he also more recently reiterated that things change.

When he laid out the latest roadmap, Epic-S was not mentioned. People started to get worried and hounded him to clarify its status. Jim responded with a wink and a nod.

Many of you on this forum are not from the US and I suspect some of the phrases and meaning get lost in translation at times. I can't speak for the rest of you. :-)

When people asked about the Epic-S Jim stated., "If you are nervous, you are not committed." and "We fully understand what everyone wants... trust us."

In my neighborhood, that was the equivalent of Jim saying, "I've got you." When someone says that, you know you're covered...end of discussion. So, I'm telling you this...

The Scarlet was ALWAYS intended to be a cinema camera (not exclusively, mind you) and, unless Epic-S is somehow still in the works, some version of Scarlet WILL have an S35 sensor.

Obviously Germany, France and the whole European union, figuring that they do not have a new camera to launch during that date, decided to pull out all the stops to keep the international media attention on them during that day, and they did it with the most news and media grabbing product they have right now: their own economical crisis. Its all a matter of TV ratings. They don't want to lose their current number one news status to both the USA and Japan, who are coming with their new, fancy cameras...

This is why I love Reduser! You guys are smart enough to get my jokes! Thank You for this thought provoking, yet amusing rebuttle. OK I will no longer digress. Just getting a little Antzy! 17 DAYS!! SCARLET!!

What if the New Scarlet is the new replacement of the Low cost 4k S35?? NOw that should have quit an effect... Wouldn't it?... ;)

Don't Tease Us like that Ketchi! I actually don't even want to think about it even being a possiblilty for the fact that if I let that in my heart and its not, I will be utterly disappointed. Like discovering the sex of your first child, you just prefer it to be a healthy baby, and accept what it is. This is exactly why I am no longer making predictions on anything about Scarlet. I want to erase all expectations and accept it for what it is. Then I will be thoroughly pleased, either way.

As in replacing the RED ONE MX completely?

David

I'm pretty sure this is going to be announced on Nov 3rd;
one camera, one modular design, all modules are cross compatible, everything is upgradable, "pick your brain" and everything else;
means no money loss on equipment replacement, and we better start to buy initial accessories right now, because after Nov 3rd - you know what's gona happen.

I think it will still be a 2/3" camera and so it will compete with the Sony SRW-9000 and F23 (F23 = 120 k €)
On the other hand....I have a Sony FS100 which is pretty cool, but I would exchange it for a scarlet anytime.
I really hope the scarlet can compete with the FS100s lowlight capabilities! Otherwise that would be a bigger tradeoff for me than losing shallow DOF. I downloaded some red one MX files and compared them. Unfortunately the crappy FS100 is a little better @ high ISOs than the One MX. (edit: Only regarding noise of course!)

The more I think about it the more it makes sense that Red announces something totally new along with Scarlet 2/3" fixed lens (which I think is sure to come). I actually held one in my hand many months ago that was very functional, so I would guess they are just stockpiling and preparing for the tidal wave :) Its gonna be a really great all around camera that fits into many different industries and genres. It should sell like hotcakes no matter what the final specs are. Red will not disappoint.

What if they canned the whole Epic-S/Scarlet S35 idea altogether... for now at least. Could they have developed a 4K M4/3or APS-C sensor that can fit in Scarlet Interchangeable Body? Maybe with an upgrade path to 5K MX S35 sensor in the future? I feel it is very unlikely seeing as Jim and the gang never mentioned M4/3 or APS-C that I can remember. Plus, I think they really want to ship these babies ASAP, so it seems like a longshot that they developed something the never even mentioned. But man, that would be a wicked camera and I bet they could keep the price way down without upsetting Epic owners. Tons of lens options with plenty of existing adapters available. It would be totally out of left field. Which is why it might just happen... Red style :)

No matter what is announced on Nov. 3rd... safe to say it will be a good day. Thanks Red.

I do love and respect Canon, but I am forever cursing these companies for crippling their own technologies in order to save something for later. I understand why they do it but for the end user its frustrating. Can't wait to see the battle commence, although I highly doubt it will last a full round.

xx

He he, sorry, but so many said their opinion that I had to voice mine...

BTW, this is all that it is really, as it seems Logical move to me form RED and from having come to know a but about Jim, Jarred and RED... Then again, it does not really matter, as RED is always
changing things on us, so knowing them means little more then knowing that changes are always present he he.

Other then that, I have not touched an other Scarlet, since we first tested in San Francisco, but all I know for sure, is that several of those babies are coming to Italy to join their bigger brothers... ;)

Quite an interesting line of thought:

Scarlet Fixed remains as we know it. $6000.

RED transitions the RED One Mysterium MX sensor into the new modular Scarlet/Epic system and sells this at the $12.000 price point.

What is RED One these days? $17.000-18.000? It has been out for so long that RED could probably cut the price to open it up to a new market. Current RED One owners have also had all the options in the world to get their money back, so they can't be pissed if the price get slashed now.

Plus, it's sensor that RED knows very well. It should be relatively easy to get production volume up to speed.

Well. How would the RED community receive this news?

Brian, I agree w/ Geoff. The only thing we know about Scarlet is what's been most recently said: 2/3rd's, fixed lens, ~$6K. There is certainly a significant market for such a camera, but overlap w/ S35 interchangeable lens cameras is probably not all that extreme. Now excellent arguments can be made that 2/3rd's has excellent DoF control and that the lens will have enough range.

But people who want interchangeable lenses and S or FF 35 are mostly probably going to buy those cameras. Now Scarlet could wind-up being significantly different than what we've been most recently told, in which case we've all just been shooting in the dark--so to speak.
