EPIC STAGE Clarification and update

Defending Bad Attitudes?!?

Defending Bad Attitudes?!?

Has the Red Team been thin skinned at times, yeah. Have threads that could spur FUD been pulled off RedUser a few times, yeah.
Is this really what people are throwing them under the bus about? Seriously?
Get over it. The Red Team is made up of imperfect human beings - I happen to like that about them, I can relate to it.
I agree with Gibby, the Red Team is an incredible group of talented and hard working folks doing an amazing, albeit imperfect, job.
FWIW I get the impression that they welcome cordial feedback about things they could do better.
If the Red Team thinks life is too short for bad attitudes, I agree with them.

really not getting if this is for me, but dont want to make a bad impression. Mainly for Eduardo who is nice and honest and shouldn't be injured for a bad explained topic by his friend. I only own myself a 7D and some lenses. Anyway if it was't for me, don't know who was this for but I agree.

I still don't get all the anger... if Canon said to me "Hey, thanks for buying the 7D, we just realised that we can do better than that and will make a camera that can do much more. You'll get your full price of the 7D refunded once we finished the new camera." and then had to delay the new camera, I'd still be thankful once I get it. Whenever that may be and whereever I am in line...

But guess what, Canon will never do that. The only company AFAIK that has ever done that is RED.

fucking insanely generous if you think about it... and also a brilliant manner in which to build fierce brand loyalty :reddevil:

I told all my friends (including early Red One owners ) back in February, "Buy an M now if you can. Don't wait for X." Months later, at NAB, I was still telling them the exact same thing. None of them listened to me, except Clay Haskell. If they had rounded up the extra money, sold their Stage 2 reservation, and bought the M, they would have paid it off twice over by now. Remember the old saying, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush?"

You have to be able to read the tea leaves in this business. And even back in February, all the leaves said Epic X could be delayed, while Epic M was a sure thing.

"I only bet on sure things." - Gordon Gekko

Sorry... yes... I forgot! Jason and his bro also took my advice! :)

So Tom, double money eh? You've had $116,000 in rentals ? I have a few years renting to pro clients, must be in the completely wrong sort of rental biz :-)

Lets see, locally they rent for 1400 so about a hundred days rental....how long have you had yours and wasn't there some down time when you dropped yours in the lake? ;-)

I'm sure Tom will clarify ... but it certainly seems like someone could have more than doubled the difference between an M and Stage 2 package (about $15-20k; depending on how you do the math and factor in the Red1 value/sale) during that time via BOTH rentals and paid work. I mean ... $30-40k in 6 months or so is a slam dunk, right?

Heck, that's barely cost of living in LA :-P

The difference between an Epic X and Epic M is how much? $12,000 or something like that? Shawn, with your low Red One number, you could have sold your Stage 2 reservation in about 2 seconds flat, right? So if the difference was $12,000, yes, I think most people could have made the difference up several times over. Ask Dino.

And wouldn't you rather have the camera now, than not have it?

It's sure easy for you to run that math now, I was expecting my EpicX in February, then 'by NAB at the latest' (remember, i'm batch #1 of the EpicXs).

and the diff between stage 2 and EpicM is about $28,000, and that's after adding on a Bomb EVF and 4 128gb SSDs to the pkg.

whatever, i want to be positive now, i'm just really looking forward to getting my camera so soon!

Like I said, you have to be able to read the tea leaves. After two years of missed deadlines on Epic X, when the M became available as a real camera that was really shipping, I advised all my friends to order it immediately, if they had the money. If they didn't have the money, I urged them to round it up, just like I did. I hate to repeat myself, but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. This proverb was proven correct once again in this case of the Epic M.

So, what's your advice now? Buy or wait?

Waiting for Scarlet 8x Fixed is the safest way because it's simply the best camera your money can buy.

And there's also the RED One MX to shoot with until then. Lots of them out there to use. As of this posting, the RED One still does things the EPIC doesn't do: Playback and time-lapse to name the two biggies I'm anxiously waiting for.

Jeff, I like your reminder.

Stage 2-3 is for owners of RED.
We all have RED-ONE so it is not like in 2007 when there was no camera like RED and we were waiting for the completely new technology to come.
Now we have RED and we are waiting for EPIC while still having the equipment to shoot on.

Well, if you want to spoil yourself the opportunity to unpack the new toy, you can go and rent the EPIC-M for one day or two and play with it, this will help your thirst and impatience.

And please do not compare EPIC-M with EPIC-X.
It is like comparing a Mercedes of the assembly line and the custom made AMG with the single mechanic’s signature on the AMG engine block that assembled it.

Sanjin, You're probably right in terms of value, and for a marksman shooter (frames perfectly every time) it is probably enough. The one drawback is the lack of upgrade to a Drogeda sensor. The 5k Epic on the other hand, will allow the scattershot shooter (like myself) to aim in the general direction of the objective and hit the target in at the very least, a part of the frame.
