EPIC STAGE Clarification and update

So, you don't think RED will ship by late August or September?

What the heck does that even mean Tom?

lol, im assuming that it's one bird right now is better than the possibility of two birds later?

Hehe, I wish I could take credit for such beautiful art. I just googled it.

I was going to compliment you on your crayon work. lol

buy an Epic M if you have the cash.
But with two months remaining, is that wise? For me it's not, certainly because I am buying the cameras for my own use. But I'm thinking the average single camera renter has to stay pretty busy to make up the difference. That's just my opinion. Maybe someone who is working an M right now can verify if the difference can be made up in a couple of months?

would it make a difference for your projects ro shoot on epic?
for me yes.
i am in preprod. for a feature which i intended to shoot on the si2k because the red1 was too heavy.
but with epic i can exactly shoot the style i want.
so for me it is worth every single dollar, because i hate the backpack system of the si2k.

This is what people were saying back in December. It's now July.
Sounds like your tea leaves are quivering with doubt.

For me personally, I can get one M or wait for two Xes, so I'll wait. But there's no doubt if I had the cash I would have already applied to own two Ms.

The question of getting an Epic-M or waiting two months for an Epic-X depends on a couple things. If you have a client base and can recoup your money quickly then you would have already bought an Epic-M. If you don't have that client base just wait for Epic-X. Its the smart thing to do. I'm happy waiting...just as long as the shenanigans stay at sane levels.

Just want to second what Andrew said about having a client base. I'm keeping my M busy, but to be completely honest about it, most of my clients have no friggin' clue what an EPIC-M is. All they care about is the end product. EPIC-M rentals in my market are almost nil, which is fine by me, because I didn't really buy it to rent it out to others. I have listed it a few places and let a bunch of locals know I have the camera. All but one or two of the legit rental inquiries are from other RED owners who would like to take it for a spin or bring it to a job in place of the RED One just to impress the producer, client, etc..

I do really wish I would have jumped on the M earlier in the game, but silly me, my crystal ball didn't show that whole tsunami thing and related delays. Then I had to put my name on the "new list" at NAB... I would still side with Tom on this one, if you have a need for the camera and the client base where you can put it to work, then go for it! If you don't have those things, then you probably don't need to worry about the M and it doesn't really matter when you get your EPIC. For someone like Shawn, I totally understand his situation. If I were a low number like that, I would've passed on the M early on as well... Knowing that I would be one of the first people out of the gate to get my X. And at this stage in the game, the premium prices on EPIC rentals are mostly gone and RED is saying that they could start shipping in the next 60 days. It's taking 30 days or so to get an M once you're approved and you pay... I think Shawn would be foolish to do the M purchase now. Then again, that's what I thought about my own M purchase back in february and a big reason it didn't happen until late April, then I paid, and waited until early June to actually receive it. Ouch.

Buying an M isn't as simple as just calling up RED and saying you're going to wire the money and would like to pick it up tomorrow.

I definitely understand the frustration of my friends like Shawn and Drew, who have really low R1 numbers. Hindsight is 20/20.

I'm still not sure, even now, that the true calculation is: buy M now or wait 2 months. That is a best-case scenario. What if the real calculation is: buy M now or wait 6 months?

The only thing that is certain with X is that nothing is certain. M is certain.
