  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Public Beta of STORM Released

So far so good! No problem installing, launches fine, all looks/effects working, Rocket purring along.

Trying my first FCP round trip now.

Great job, looks fantastic from what I've seen.

James -
Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not see a way of making a tiff or jpg snapshot of a frame in the viewer. An icon or a right-click menu choice for such would be very useful.

Do you think you will be eventually be able to support FCP Multicam XMLs?

I've heard that the FCP XMLs are pretty screwy from others who have tried.

Would be AMAZING if you could. I work almost exclusively with Red Multicam and at the moment there is no way to conform.

Hi Henk,

Thanks for the comments. Yes we are currently trying to ignore any effects that Storm doesn't recognize in the XML but they'll be various complex cases which were not prepared for yet (e.g. XML contain many effects or unsupported file formats etc). We'll continue to test complex XML's and we'll be able to improve this functionality in Storm soon.

We are currently looking into the occasional black frames being displayed in the viewer and we have various thoughts on what's causing the problems. Just a thought, are your clips using either Red color2 / Red Gamma2 in the clips which are going black?

Dragging looks into Timelines is not supported at the moment, I'm hoping that we'll be making some nice improvements to the Timeline very soon.

Thanks,

James.

I had another look at it, but the black viewer thing isn't necessarily on clips with redgamma2 or redcolor2. It also happens on old footage that is in Redspace, where other clips from the same folder show up ok. At one point the whole timeline was black as well.

Another two minor things I noticed about the workspace:
- I'm in a dual screen setup here. When toggling between editing and reviewing, or after a startup, it doesn't remember this. The layout itself is saved, but it still needs to be dragged to the right to be stretched across the two screens every time.
- When I have double clicked a tab to become a seperate window, these always stay on top when I switch to another application.

Don't want to hijack this thread about STORM which is an amazing piece of software but you could check out my XML2RCX applescript as latest versions should let you send multicam and FCP subclips to REDCINE-X... let me know by email if it doesn't work so I can have a look at your xml files...

Hi Steven,

Sorry for the problem you had submitting your details.
I'm responsible for the Foundry's website. I had a quick check tonight and things were working normally, so I'll investigate properly in the morning. I see you managed to register a little later - please message me if you discovered what was causing the error (hopefully it'll be obvious from the logs anyway, but just in case...)

Cheers,
Andy Ballingall

Andy, I've replied to your email.

All sorted now, thanks again.

"I have not been able to export anything but black."

Sounds like a codec issue. A stab in the dark this - have you got QT7Pro installed? I could be wrong, but if you only have QT10 (which comes with SL) the export options are non-existent, and Storm's export might be relying on what QT capabilities your system already has.

You will find QT7Pro on your SL installation disk as one of the extras.

That's just a wild guess though...

Hey Richard,

I read your post in regards to syncing updates coming soon. This is great news! Just a few thoughts in regards to that.

If you are working on a long format show that will be reconnecting back to the original broadcast WAV files for an audio conform you will most likely not be able to get both the Audio TC and the Video TC into an outputted QT. Or at least that is the impression I am under. This is a QT issue and not your software and or RedcineX's software's fault. If you were to somehow get around this that would be amazing.

Mind you, if you are rendering directly out to an AAF or ALE during an MXF render. You could carry this audio information across.(Audio Reel# and TC) This would be ideal for your Avid workflow! FCP...a little trickier I suppose. But this is something that would be needed for most long format jobs.

Any commercial that get posted here in Toronto do not normally do an audio conform so this isn't an issue (They use there synced dailies audio for finishing), but any long format show normally does do a conform.
Also having the option of doing a manual sync would be needed as your Jam sync may be lost throughout your shoot at some point and or it is out a frame or two and just needs to be tweaked.

Cheers,

Looking forward to the Windows x64 version. Will have to admire everyone else's screenshots in the meantime. (:

Me too... exciting product! I hope the PC version comes soon! No offense to Apple acolytes, but FCP (and Mac as a platform) are not for me.

Best,
Tim

Is there any way to use Storm on projects that have already been started? I just finished cutting a short film and was excited to use Storm to online the project. I did a "log and transfer" with the footage in FCP, but since the footage was not converted to proxies using Storm, is there any way I can grade this project in Storm without starting from the beginning?

I opened it and had only a short time to get my fingers on it...

what i missed are the color wheels and settings for shift/gamma/gain...
are this controls coming or did I not found them ???

Hey Richard,
One other note in regards to full screen mode.

It looks like when you are in this mode the only way to get out of it is to hit Command F. It would be nice if ESC also got you out.

Cheers,

I hope that Storm could exactly do that. Shoot, edit proxies in FCP, XML to Storm, do the grading with the original RAW files, conform to what ever.

That would be it.

Tim

As long as your files have the original TC and the Tape ID (Or Reel# for FCP) you can conform back in Storm. You do not NEED to start the process in Storm. You can create an XML from FCP and import that into Storm to relink to your R3Ds. (Log and Transfer in FCP will have kept that info in tact!)

I just ran a test through and it worked no problem.
(Used some dailies I had created in RedcineX)
- Placed 3 trimmed clips into a fcp timeline. Selected the timeline, exported out an XML.
- Opened Storm, selected Import FCP XML
- It imported a Timeline named after my XML.
- When I double clicked on it, it opened the timeline with all media offline.
- I selected all right clicked and hit reconnect media.
- Selected my root drive containing the media.
And that was it.

Awesome!

Any plans for adding import of FilmScribe XMLs or plain old EDLs? That would open Storm up to projects offlined on Avid, or anything else for that matter. That plus R3D trimming and we'd have a great way to pull and trim in-takes.

By the way, Storm will not let me drag clips into the Tray if it is set to list view, only icon view. A great start, though.
