  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The R90

OMG....

That's got to be the post of the month!
Didn't even know we had that emoticon...
You have just opened the flood-gates...

On R90 Epic should be repositioned at the center of theoretical wheel that the optic can always stays in the center point axis.

Something as it is shown at the "photoshop-corrected" picture below.

Exactly right Sanjin.

Also, as of right now the rig doesn't seem to use any form of rod baseplate to allow for matte boxes, gears etc. Shouldn't this be factored in to the height/size?

I know there's competing interests as far as size/weight goes, but anyway, it's something to think about.

Thanks for showing us regardless Red Team, no doubt our comments will help in some way towards the final product.

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul

Yes, a base plate to allow for rods should be accounted for, which was why I mentioned maybe this R90 rig should attach directly to the body, and instead of the curved portion coming under the camera, it could go above and therefore allow to attach whatever you want below without getting in the way, and the curved portion wouldn't have to be that big as the top part of the camera is smaller than the part below the lens.

My 3 cents,
Damien

I smell an ET mod....

I smell an ET mod....

I smell an ET mod coming for this thing along the lines of an offset plate machined of Impossibilium and equipped with a combo dual axis radar/laser range finder feeding in to a grafted hamster brain (encased in polyurethane and fed on radioactive oatmeal) driving an iphone app that tells the most productiom ignorant person on set that your subject is crooked and that you should level out - using one of three different selectable voices (HAL from 2001, Hamster Voice of Doom, and Sam Kinison from beyond the grave). It will be available with instructions written in Esperanto and be covered in ET's new signature color "Hot Pink Polka Dot"

I am of course only conjecturing - without coffee yet - but I really do think this thing could be engineered to be mod friendly - imagine the possibilities with a drive tie in? Feedback to the REDMote?

-- scenario - shot that requires fine tuned zoom and focus control while adjusting angle - zoom and focus are each inverse to each other (an almost Zolly) - BUT now you add this thing, with automated feedback and powered motor option - and the angle determines the zoom/ focus relationship (90deg = zoom all the way out, close focus | 0deg = zoom all the way wide, infinite focus) - and with a perfect axis and slow mo - you've got a great rig to get probably the worst shot in the world. But at least you can post it on Vimeo as camera porn.

This thing - with a nice slider and a geared head! Might be about the ugliest most awkward configuration, but it would definitely be amusing to have. Yeah - I GET IT Photo peoples - its intended for stills work - but you know, this forum is populated with people that think in motion. We are going to bastardize anything and everything we can to improve our shooting options.

PS thank you again RED team for making life even more interesting! :)

Really nice work, Guys. BTW, Axial isolation of the lens is not important in a rig such as this. When you switch from horizontal to vertical, you have to re-compose anyway. If you need the nodal point isolated when switching camera orientation, there are very capable solutions for that already and yes, they are much bigger. This rig is obviously a very cost-effective and efficient means of switching horizontal to vertical. Now the DP can shoot the poster elements on set in between scene set-ups if they want.

IMO, rarely does One encounter a horizontal composition that works perfectly vertically as well (without adjustment). I'd say the circumstances are much less than 1% of the time. Very elegant solution.

Sorry Jim!! Looks like i've opened a can of worms :-/ Alan should have been recruiting when i enquired, then you could have kept my mouth from flapping :lipsrsealed:

It would replace a Tango head only when you wanted to tilt to the left. We tilt the other way just as often.

Well, what an extremely good point. DOH! :emote_headwall:

OK, so I get it now that I actually, y'know, think about it. Forget everything I said about lens axis, it's just not what it's designed for.

No wonder Jim gets so frustrated at times.

Since Jarred said the thing was manual, no motors, my biggest question about this thing is how they made it move in the video lol

Tie fishing line to the top of the camera?

Also it deeply undermines my confidence in Red that they use Canon lenses instead of Nikon :001_tongue:

Yes, we need fair and balanced lensing.:thumbup1:

The great thing about canon mount is that canon ef electronic lenses are really good and if you want to use manual you can use zeiss ze; any nikon or nikon mount, zeiss c/y, leica, etc. Etc.

Maybe they're from Jim's personal collection. Jim was a Canon user (until he built Epic), right?
