  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The R90

Would This be compatible with a Steadicam stage - nice for turning a rig sideways and drifting across a pool table or into a car interior!

Probably not the best solution since you could get a much smaller and lighter bracket if switching back and forth quickly wasn't a requirement.

If you're in VFX and you need to shoot shots with optically centered alignment then you probably already have a nodal ninja anyway. The R90 doesn't put the optical center in the correct place for shooting spherical images anyway, regardless of the rotation.

That looks OK. But if someone really wants to put a cinema camera (digital or film) in a nodal head that can spin perfectly on it axis while shooting, the answer is: the Oppenhiemer Spin Axis 360 Head. It comes with geared handles or can be motor driven. I've used it in a music video and it worked perfectly and smoothly. The right tool for that specific job.

The R90 looks like the right tool to put the camera easily in a 90degree mounting position for a separate shot, without having to re-rig the cam. It is much bigger than the R90 and that size and graphite structure is required to move a 40lb rig smoothly through 360degrees.

Just sayin...

Agreed. Just pointing out that those who dismiss this for VFX work should already be dismissing it for other reasons. ;) That being said if you're shooting VFX plates then you don't need a full blown 40lb rig. You just need a brain and grip on there which should be less than 20lb.

If you need motion shots with a full rig then you should be going for something like the Oppenheimer solution. I don't think I would want a 40lb camera on that r90 either and the r90 doesn't have forward to backward lens axis adjustment.

With only one direction of rotation and no gearing for fine adjustment it won't replace something like the tango head.

This particular tool seems very specifically built for 'still' photographers. The smaller and the lighter it is and still solves that task, all the better. I won't be picking one up. Not because it doesn't maintain lens axis, but because it's not made for my applications.

Sanjin what Libec tripod are you using in the picture ? I have heard good things about the
RS-450M and was thinking about getting it for the Scarlet.

Awesome! Can't wait for it to come out... I think I will slap on a red lens though (but the canon L 24-70mm is my favorite canon lens).

Bump!

Is this still on the docket? I can't find the price in here anywhere. And will it be in the booth?

bump, lol. I was thinking the same thing. Cant wait to see all the fun toys...

How tired is the RED TEAM right now at less than a week until NAB?

Fun times ahead. look forward to seeing the usual suspects

Well, all I can say is that I can not wait till the R90 is under our Epic... ;)

During the Chicago Fashion Shoot we mounted the Epic on a Ball Head so to have it in Portrait mode, but it was not easy for me to control the camera, so I really can't have the R90 fast in off... Jarred ;)

Thanks Raphael,

I take pride in the crew I try to assemble to make sure that we always have great coverage for the BTS Vids and pics,
but the BTS pics would have looked much sexier if the EPIC was mounted on the R90... ;)
