  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC 3D...

Was each camera controlled with one Redmote?

How was syncing them? Better than the R1?

Thanks
Paul

it looks very impressive, but for hand held there are a few things to consider and get improved like balance on the shoulder, like better viewing of the lcd which looks to be very close to eye vision, and also better and wider handle configuration for better control of the rig. 45 lbs isnt a light load for handheld and needs to be handled best balance-able way to be comfortable.
But it looks fairly small set up.
Nice.

The bug is not keeping EPIC from working. We have cut off it's head but it's legs are still twitching. Hopefully not much longer and we are off to the races.

Jim

Make them stop twitching......You guys are the BEST

7) And this is without going into mirror polarization issues, dust, opposite rolling shutters, light loss compensation... with mirror rigs.
Regarding opposite rolling shutter, is it possible to reverse the scan in the Epic for this purpose, or is there a configuration (like upside-down) which alleviates this? Too tired to apply reflective trigonometry today...

Seeing this rig, I'm SO glad we reserved two Stage 2 Epics! I will be giving this rig (or one very similar to it) a baptism of fire with my upcoming short "Maria", the last film in my robot short trilogy! From Super16 on "Eve", to 720p HDV on "Birth", to 5K S3D on "Maria". HUGE leap in quality!! Can't wait.... :)

Cheers,

Paul

Admittedly, I've been holding back my excitement for 3D because the rigs have been very big (which is fine for some projects) and it just doesn't seem practical in a lot of situations where a smaller crew may be employed. Seeing Jarred holding that 3D rig certainly changes that perception for me. Higher resolution, smaller form factor. To me, that translates to more creativity. 45lbs is still a hefty size rig for handheld, however if the weight distribution is handled properly, it seems like it could be manageable. Anyone who has shot with an R1 loaded up with heavy lenses and accessories without the proper handheld configuration knows what I mean.

Congrats guys on putting together these rigs. Looking forward to testing them out at some point.

This is very encouraging to hear!

Hi Steve- Don't you think an EASY RIG 300N will make all that weight float away? We love ours for handheld. FYI: Leverage flies 70lb single rigs every week. 45lbs for 3D with Beamsplitter and EVERYTHING is silly light. imho

Awesome. Is side-by-side configuration possible?

By the way, Jim, you are due for a new avatar, my friend!

Lens motors

Lens motors

We are actually using a prototype based off the Neutron :)

and remember.. that weight is based off of everything on the rig.. including a shoulder support with handles, 3 hour batteries ( RED BRICKS ) to power each camera, all lens motors, motor boxes, lockit, etc. etc. etc..
Hi,
What lens motors are you using?

Thanks for confirming this Joey, and yes over/thru and under/thru to offer the Beam splitter configuration for Shoulder mount and Steady cam operations, while oposite for Sticks and other configurations.

I ahve not seen the 3Ality rig, but I have seen all the ones presented at NAB, and I must say, Et's are likely the most pricy yes, but the best and more configurable and electronically controllable rigs out there, definitely ET, Kudos to them, look forward to get mine for the two Epic-X coming home..soon.. soonish ;~)

Take a look what is available as a production unit and what you get for the money and the word "pricey" will soon not fit. ET rigs can shoot in three different configurations. No one else can do that and all require dedicated rigs for each. ET rigs come complete with electronics and the hand controller, some do not. ET Quasar rigs are shippable in days, not months. The Neutron and Pulsar are less than two months from deliverable.

Something even more revolutionary?

Something even more revolutionary?

Shoot 2D and worry about focus. Shoot 3D and worry about IO, convergence and focus. Both the ET and 3ality rigs do a great job of letting you know where you are to avoid the "throw up circle".

Jim

The small size of the EPIC looks to be great for the 'right here, right now' 3D mirror rig solutions.

However, just looking at those mirror rigs gives me a headache. I mean, how many times have I had lenses that don't match? Or a lens motor go berserk when somebody talk on their motorola radio? Or a less than ideal HD tent that didn't reveal the necessary information to make a good decision? And that's just for 2D! With one set of lenses...

With RED's previously announced larger sensor EPIC cameras it seems to me that RED is in a good position to invent something much more revolutionary for 3D movie making... A single lens camera with a wide sensor and the ability to set IO in post is the most obvious thing, but I'm sure you have much more advanced ideas than that! :-)

Joey, that is exactly my point on the post, were most do not take in consideration the full package of controllers and simply make a difference in the price based just on that price, ET's rigs are Pricey, that is a fact, when compared to the now many alternatives, but my point again, was in deed to showcase the large differentiation one should make when comparing rigs, and what the Full package of such rigs offer.

Amongst all rigs available I have preferred the ET rig form the start, because of its comprehensive controls range of electronically and remotely possibilities of all commands of the rigs.

You have a very Loyal customer here Joey, so don't miss understand my post ;~)
