  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC 3D...

A prism rig is currently used for most every professional gig. You need to include this in your thinking. There is a reason why this is so.

Whatever you are going to attempt... size of camera relate to resolution becomes critical with 3D. EPIC will be the best solution no matter how you look at it IMHO.

Unfortunately, even so I always loved the Parallel rig, the Beam Splitter is an absolute must in most shoots, scenarios, unless you are shooting Mountain ranges miles away with the cameras set several feet apart form each other with Super Telephotos, and even then the depth effect is much reduced, as to duplicate the manipulation of Disparity and fake what we see, needs to have a Wide angle, and the closer the better, and for this wide angle lenses are preferred to create more of a S3D look, while the more you go telephoto the more the image looses Dimension and depth, and for this in Portrait Photography we prefer and tend to use telephoto to super telephoto to flatten the subjects, vice versa in S3D we need to hence its depth of 3D so staying below 85mm a must, 18mm to 35mm my favorite.

All I can say is that I so look forward to start shooting S3D with Epic-X!!

Jim how goes the bug hunt? Any progress? Also it seems the bug is not keeping Epics from working.. what is the operational percentage of the camera at this time?

Thanks

Jay

I'm assuming this is what we are looking at (in prototype form.) From the Technica 3D website:

Pulsar™
(T3D-P)
Pulsar 3D Camera Platform with Integrated IO & C Control:
-Moco Module for IO & C control (direct camera)
-Alignment Module (reflected camera)
-90 degree fixture for beamsplitter mode
-Beamsplitter frame and backlight box
-50/50 dichroic mirror, 16” trapezoid
-MtrB (IO & C Motor Box)
-MCB (IO & C Motor Control Box) with a 6’ power cable
-THC (IO & C Technica Hand Unit wired/wireless)
-1x 8’ (THC Remote Command Cable)
-Pair of mechanical interfaces for one of the following supported cameras are included: SI 2K Mini, Scarlet, EPIC, Canon 5D/7D.

Approx. $58,000 Available 10-12 Weeks Lead Time

The bug is not keeping EPIC from working. We have cut off it's head but it's legs are still twitching. Hopefully not much longer and we are off to the races.

We are actually using a prototype based off the Neutron :)

and remember.. that weight is based off of everything on the rig.. including a shoulder support with handles, 3 hour batteries ( RED BRICKS ) to power each camera, all lens motors, motor boxes, lockit, etc. etc. etc..

good news

Thats good news! Use a Hammer to stop the legs from twitching.... :-)

With the current ability of NUKE+OCULA to adjust the inter-ocular distance of the cameras AFTER the shoot, this makes a really compact side-by-side setup that much more acceptable. We are doing some extensive testing with the RED ONE cameras now, hoping to apply this to EPIC once we have two... While optically they would be almost identical (since the lenses are wider then the camera bodies), the EPICs would make for so much lighter (and far more compact) setup. The only remaining issue with the side-by-side approach is the lack of matte-boxxes and filter to accommodate two lenses almost touching side-by-side (hint, hint...). But there is nothing a gaffer-tape can't fix for now...

PS: Good to see You up & about Jim!

This is what I'm waiting for awhile... Thanks guys.

The biggest issue here will be the Lenses Sizes, for this I have been literally drooling over the new Leica C Summilux, but the last tests we have done and also talking to the guys at ET proved that the RED PRO's are easier matched by pairs then others which you might think could should be better matched for pairs coming form different sets, just based on pricing and Name brands, so I would also look forward to see form RED a new Mini Set of S3D specifically designed lenses, of equal sizes and small front diameter, similar to the Leicas, off course at a reduce price, even 10K each would be a great solution.

Amazing.

Also a basic Dream 3D rig should consist the following:

Epic 5K.

LEICA Summilux-C™ lenses.

Here is a shot of a working EPIC 3D rig. It is a new Element Technica rig sitting on new RED shoulder mount and handles. Cameras are recording incredible 5K 3D images and the package is extremely small and light (for a 3D rig). 3ality also has a smaller model ( TS-5 ) designed for EPIC.

Jim,

Is this the same rig used for Pirates 4. Did you by any chance given Two Epic's for Pirates by any chance.

Attached our custom Rig (Side-by-Side) modified for Red One from initial design of Panasonic Varicam 5 years before.

Hope EPIC will give more options when its released to design 3D rigs based on various needs.
