  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC 3D...

I dont know if it is the same rig Ketch, but the rig i saw and tried at RED Day at NAB was absolutely fantastic.
Incredible balance and comfort.

Stereoscopic thoughts

I really dislike the complications of a beam splitter set up.. wouldn't it be so awesome if someone manufactured a one inch brain with 2/3s chip inside and an prime set no wider than one inch.. ;)

A side by side rig really is the most intuitive though. If we could somehow get around a one inch side by side interaxial with Red quality... that would be holy. No opposite polarization, no stop loss*, no aberration correction, no dust, no weight, no setup slowdown or funky mirror boxes. Paired with good post stereo strength synthesis (to borrow Lenny Lipton's phrase) it would be perfect. Then the beam splitter could be relegated to the close up... steadicaming could once again be pleasant, etc.

I was like you Alex,

I dislike the Beam splitter from the start, but soon found out, right off the first days of trial and error, and the full understanding of the many limitations offered by Parallel rigs, that I now come to love the Beam splitter rig for the true array of possibilities and capacity of utilizing wide angles to create an added dimensionally and form to the subjects up close and personal, to create further Drama in your shot, this only a Beam Splitter rig can achieve, and I love it, especially one this reasonably sized to shoot S3D 5K!!!

There is a trend (mercifully) toward a more moderate approach to 3D... meaning much less exaggerated "stuff in your lap" effect. That means a closer inter-ocular, which means a beam-splitter rig.

This is something I look forward to, since every time I talk about any of my stories to be made in S3D, they immediately assume, why? What are you letting fly out of the screen in to the audience, and I say "NOTHING" and they say, okay then is not really 3D is it?

So I say, yes it is tasteful and story telling utilizing a wonderful media to create dimensionality, and introduce a 3 dimensional realism to bring Drama, attention, and participation of the audience to what is happening inside of the screen, inside my story, the story of my Characters, this is S3D to me.

I wonder with the smaller size of lenses and sensors of the scarlet 2/3 camera, one can setup a basic parallel rig with an acceptable inter-occular?

Sense depth-of-field is not as paramount with stereoscopic, one of the main drawbacks of shooting on smaller chips is negated, thus making scarlet perhaps a better candidate for this type of rig.

There is an excellent example of the issues you run into on the foundry's youtube site regarding using a beam split setup. Not to say some of these can be run into with a parallel rig, it just seems more simple and less insane to me.
