  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Zoom lens

I am also in a dilemma between Scarlet and Epic (which I could just barely pay for... and barely be able to edit)/ The thing about the Canon glass is the very great crop factor on 2/3 sensor...
I'm trying to think about everything when I thought about the two. I even considered an Epic X and trying to find a way to afford it. And honestly at this point it really is more than I need, and probably a good amount above my level. I have a decent level of knowledge in cameras, sensors and shooting, but most of my knowledge has been in Post Production as most of my jobs have had more work in that department.

Yes I can afford the Epic S, and probably get it up and running, but I think I'm a bigger fan of the Scarlet right now personally. I think about my Computers, my hard drives and time, and really the Scarlet will probably run me to the maximum as it is for the time I have to do things. I like the idea of possibly being able to have an interchangeable and a Fixed. Once I've gotten more knowledgeable and a bigger budget, and money it'd be something I'd consider.

If I were you Enrique I'd thing about everything involved in it. Think about how long of battery life your going to need, the weather conditions, how that will effect your battery life, and your shooting environment, like myself, I can't get to a computer until the end of the day. I can't unload footage mid-day. Maybe try to budget everything together with what you'll want and need, sliders, dolly's, cranes, unless you already have them and consider that too. We're not quite there to having 4K tv's standard yet. 3K will do pretty well. And having an on board lens that will shoot everything to start out is great too! I'm looking at the fixed to start and am going to see after about 6 months - a year what I can afford and maybe upgrade! Just me though.

I honestly think that a lot of people are going to swing back around with the scarlets. S35 has become the feature of the year for the sub10k market...even if it has chunky compression, limited DR, and resolves less than 1000 lines. There is a lot to be said for footage that can actually match film, regardless of sensor size. Once these cameras get out and people start doing some really amazing things with them, I think a lot of the DOF argument and the crop factor will become less of an issue. People will stop thinking about what you can't do with these cameras and they will be blown away by what you can do.

It's this kind of outlook that the rest of the Movie/Cinematography world hates :)

But everyone at RedUser will love. I'm kind of one of the people who trys to follow all the sensor updates, crops and issues with sensors but I can't keep up. I have to much other work to do. Being behind the camera is obviously my dream and what I love to do but this has been my outlook from the start. I've always been intrigued and loved having shots with very shallow DOF but at the same time i can see all the other issues with my footage from shooting with the FS100 recently as well as my 7D. I'm very excited for the Scarlet and think it will really blow anything away in its price point.

We're all writing with motion here! Why not have the best tool to do it? (in your price range of course) :)

Yes, i agree with all your points, getting the budget for a EPIC-X together is just the beginning. So i came to the same conclusion as you did, but now there are the new prices and i started again to think about getting an EPIC-X at 2011-rates. ;)

Yeah I feel the same but I think the if it's to far out of range the Epic S, Scarlet Interchangeable will do fine for me.

Ok, this is my first post and Im itching to get this info.. can the scarlet do "slow zooms" on the zoom rocker? such as a super slow pull/push zoom. I do a lot of work that would require these types of camera techniques. Basically Im wondering if the zoom rocker can do variable speeds on the electronic zoom. thanks

Welcome to the forum! Unfortunately, I don't believe that we have any hard information about the different zoom settings that will be available for Scarlet. I'm guessing that the camera will have some way of providing for slow, smooth zooms.

While this poster is asking about a Zoom lens, I figured I'd ask, they do plan on making a PL mount for the Scarlet Interchangeable don't they? Say you bought a Scarlet interchangeable and wanted to use a Red Pro Prime/Pro Zoom lens rather than use a mini prime you can right? How would that effect your footage. It would just crop it am I correct? I just ask because I think if I end up getting a Scarlet Interchangeable I'd rather invest in PL Red Glass than Mini PL, with future plans of upgrading to Epic's or whatever the future holds.

If what you are asking actually happens (making a PL mount for Scarlet), and you attached a RED Pro lens, you are right that the lens would crop the footage - somewhat dramatically. The "crop factor" would be, if I recall correctly, around 6 or 7 to one, turning an 18mm lens into an effective 135 mm FOV in comparison with a FF camera. It would be pretty hard to get anything wide.

I haven't been following that closely of late but I seem to remember there might be a mini-PL mount for the Scarlet interchangeable though I am not sure exactly how that will play into the situation. Right now I am just one of those many folks hanging around waiting for some real facts about Scarlet.

EDIT: Upon reflection, perhaps the crop factor would be slightly less - maybe 4:1 for the 2/3 sensor? Like I said, I haven't been paying attention lately and I am a little rusty on my Scarlet facts.

The lens mounts should all be interchangeable for any body - epic or scarlet. So there is already a PL and canon mount for the scarlet...just no scarlet yet!

Indeed. I think we are looking somewhere in the area of 3.5x.

I remember mention that the scarlet would need separate mounts as the body size is different. Looking at the Ti mount in the store on red dot com it's not compatible with scarlet but that isn't always accurate so who knows I could be wrong.

The canon mount does not have the compatibility chart, but if the Ti wont fit I assume it wont either.

I believe this is correct. I'm not sure how you will mount Canon/Pl lenses to the Interchangeable. The body is a good amount smaller than the Epic and Scarlet fixed. I hope there is a PL solution though. I'd be very interested in picking up a few Red Primes for better glass and to take advantage of the crop for a long lens factor, as the mini primes cover up to 75mm if I remember correctly.

Sorry a bit OT as well but what effect besides losing the ability to have a wider frame shot does the Crop Factor take away from you? Does it reduce quality optically?

It wouldn't. Some of the qualities of the lens that you might see at the edges - chromatic aberration, vignetting, distortion, etc - would be cropped off, so in that way, the image would be different. But, if the quality of the sensors are identical, there shouldn't be any difference in image quality from 3K sensor vs. taking a 3K crop from a larger sensor.
