  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Zeiss Supreme Prime series

Are samples of work in which a highly talented DP did everything possible to produce a good result, give the lenses every advantage, and minimize any shortcomings of the lenses all that valuable in gauging the performance of lenses?

Wouldn't it be more educational to see the result of putting the lenses under optical duress and making effort to expose any of their flaws?

I note that the "24 hours" video includes some flare tests. But I'd like to see the lenses put under more harsh conditions. The work is lovely, but the results of a talented DP shooting a beautiful young woman in soft light and in a beautiful setting doesn't tell me all that much about the lenses. Almost any lens would look good under those conditions and in those hands. Maybe the best test would be the results of the lenses being used by a mediocre DP operating under extreme conditions. Which, by coincidence, is every one of my shoots.

You already have my shipping address, Zeiss. Just send me the tracking number.

El Viaje

Shot on Red Monstro 8K VV with Zeiss Supreme Primes. Be sure to watch the closing credits, it shows some "behind the scenes" footage of the Red Monstro 8k VV and some of the Zeiss Supreme Primes lenses that were used from about 6:48 to the end

Not bad, this one shows some really dope bokeh from the lenses and the contrast is very good as well. Although the taco part was a bit weird the story was decent, wish they would have done so more close focusing on the rocks... Also wish there were tests with better than LED lighting.

The BTS shows them running around with litepanels I think? Still no breakdowns from folks using the lenses.

David,

I think now that the lenses have been officially announced, more shorts shot with them along with some BTS stuff will be forthcoming.

Thank you for the videos, but do they have anything to do with the Zeiss Supreme primes? Were they shot on Zeiss Supreme primes or something?

John,

Frankly there is very little info available about the Zeiss Supreme Primes other than what has already been posted. The next major event for the Zeiss will be "Cine gear Expo ", which will be 05/31/2018.

here are the other major events where zeiss will appear.

With each succession of events, more and more information will become available. However, in the meanwhile, I thought filling some time with some Zeiss sponsored creative/learning materials aimed at the creative/technical ways cinematographers are utilizing lenses couldn't hurt. When other related relevant materials are available or are posted, then there will no further need for any further none related posts.

Hmm. Well to that point Rand, let me know what you want to know and see. I've seen these 3 separate times during their development and can probably answer a few things. I have a project coming up where I'll likely go with them too.

Phil,

Thanks!! Whatever you can bless us with will be fine.

Completely different designs.

Completely different manufacturers as well. Arri and Zeiss did not collaborate on the signature primes. Zeiss has denied any involvement in the design/manufacturing of the signature primes.

Arri and Zeiss did not come to an agreement to renew their contractual partnership of 75 year in 2016. The fate of the Arri Zeiss Master primes is unknown, since they were a ‘joint’ development, I wonder if they are able to continue manufacturing them... or how that will work...

According to Christian Bannert ,Vice President, Development & Manufactur-
ing, Consumer Products at ZEISS, when asked in a 44 page interview in Fdtimes. Page 11

Most ZEISS Cine lenses were done with ARRI. Why did you go
out on your own with the Supremes?

"ARRI and ZEISS both stand for high quality and reliability. Both
companies have been working very well and successfully together
for over 80 years.
As part of a joint effort with ZEISS in terms of design and devel-
opment, ARRI launched the Master Anamorphic, Master Prime
and Ultra Prime lens families. We received an excellent response
from our customers. We are delighted about this success. ARRI
will continue to offer these products and the service that goes
with them.
The partnership is not exclusive: ARRI and ZEISS have both pur-
sued their own projects concurrently. ARRI teamed up with other
partners to develop the Alura Zooms and the ARRI Signature
Primes. ZEISS launched the Compact Primes, Cinema Zooms
and the Lightweight Zoom on its own. The ZEISS Supreme Primes
are another lens range that ZEISS is pursuing independently.
ZEISS and ARRI will, of course, continue to pursue joint projects
together.
As a result, now ARRI have their Signature Primes. And we are
introducing our Supreme Primes. But let me repeat: we will still
work together with ARRI. Maybe in the future we’ll do another
new project together again. It really depends on the market"
