Seling Zeiss Opton B-Speed 50mm, T1.4 in very good condition. It has the original ARRI bajonet mount and can be used with any PL adapter. Lens sells for 1550 Euro. Whitness marks imperial and metric. One tiny dot at the rear element approx 2mm away from the fitting.

PM Sent... Is this lens still for sale?

For those that don't know "OPTON" is just the name Western Zeiss sold their glass under in Communist Europe. This lens, by all accounts, shouldnt be any different than a standard Zeiss Super Speed "B" Speed. Have a lens tech check it of course, but I'm pretty sure these are the same. Zeiss has legal issues in the Eastern Block during the cold war over who had rights to the name "Zeiss", so they had to sell their cinema glass their under "Opton". But in theory...its all the same glass.

Anyway. Nice lens!

Nick is right. After the war the Opton lenses came out of Western Germany, while the Jena lenses came out of the Eastern Germany Zeiss factory in the town of Jena. There were of course Jena lenses from before the war too, so it gets a bit confusing. Opton lenses had chromed brass barrels while Jena lenses had aluminum barrels. To my knowledge that is the only difference between the two. Optons being the more disreable of the two, but optically they are identical.

Hi Clint,

need to correct you slightly. Opton was the relabeled version exported from FRG to GDR due to ideological reasons. Export went over Sweden at that time. Technically and mechanically identical. Whereas Zeiss Jena was made in GDR and can be compared to older Schneider lenses lookwise. Softer and less contrast.

Best

Markus
