  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Youtube's VP9 4K streaming Codec + RED

Blair, I will touch base with the team at RED who worked on this to see what specs and info we can give you.

Blair talk to Brian Henderson... he kinda lives at the Youtube now :)

Peter and Jonathan Salvia from YouTube Nation have been our guides for VP9 and 4K on YouTube. They have built a rock solid workflow with Adobe for this daily youtube show - all of the studio spots are shot on SCARLET and uploaded in 4K. I will ask him to post some detail on their setup. Phil also had a head start on this conversation in this thread http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?111230-Google-VP9-4K-HD-Sample

This makes me real happy. VP9 has made tremendous quality and rendering improvements since it's inception. I'd like to see support for VP9 export in Redcine-X Pro for sure. I'd also love it in any 3rd party applications. These are still the early days, but this is one of the codecs that's going to play a major part in the digital distribution future for some time to come.

The current profiles are good. I want to see 10 and 12 bit happen eventually.

I'll have to get you some fresh content and maybe a couple of the "OG" Dragon pieces.

These are exciting days.

This has put a big smile on my face. :)

There has been a lot of momentum behind UHD 4K for some time now but behind the scenes some of the major manufacturers don't seem to be following through which is such a wasted opportunity! This is leading to the whole thing starting to loose momentum. It makes me want to beat my head against a wall or something.

It's so great to see RED get behind VP9.
There are still issues behind VP9. The implementation in chrome is painfully slow. It seems the decoder in firefox works much, much, faster when I have attempted to use it but so far it doesn't work properly with youtube. (I can only coax 240p with no sound out of the thing, great looking 240p tho!)

I'm hoping that if companies like RED bring some enthusiasm to the table then maybe it will lead google to have more enthusiasm about VP9 and we might even see some improvements in VP9 support in chrome.

This may not seem like a huge announcement but sometimes it's paying attention to the little details that can make a difference. :)

Awesome! Thanks Jarred, Brain for listing our YouTube channel as a featured channel on yours!

Nearly 3-years ago my wife and I bought into the Epic-M program with every penny we had knowing that it was the only single tool would totally change our future. Now 3-years later we've been blessed with much success after taking the call by Michael Cioni at the 2012 Reduser Meet to push 4K format. Immediately after that NAB we started to post all our nature passion project in 4k on Youtube. It was a total bitch at first to figure out the best workflow and a lot of people laughed at of us for even trying, saying that no one had a 4K monitors so what was the point (even we didn't have a 4k monitor). But we held true told them that "if we didn't who would" and "why post it in 1080p if we could future proof it in 4K".

It truly a great honor to be listed and recognized by Red in this way because they have already done so much for us.

Thanks everyone over at RED for making a great product and for not listen to what others and paving your own path.

Any chance you guys will be putting up the RED Dragon short from NAB? Would love to see it in 4K.

Matt, we wish we could put everything up there, but there are some of our videos that had specific usage rights so we cannot put on there. At the end of the day, we did not do this for us to put our own stuff on there. We want this to be a spot YOU GUYS can showcase your work in 4K.

Were is the LIKE button... :)

Sorry Brian just reminded me.. the newest codec has only rolled out to select channels ( including ours ) so you need to be on our channel if you want to check out the new codec. If you have something great you wanna test, just email using the youtube@red.com email a link and if its good we will upload it for you.

I just got tornado footage on my Epic this week in Nebraska, please save some room for me. It will take a little while to do the post work.

Regarding the link, does it need to be a YouTube 4K link? Vimeo? Will HD version of UHD work for reviewing?

Thanks,
Phil

Cool! I think its the right move to go behind VP9 and work with Google. Really cool to see things are moving on.

EDIT: Am i the only one who was disappointed about the lack of VP9 and HEVC in Adobe's new big update? ;)

Hey Brian, thanks for the Salvia Brothers shout out :)

Super stoked to help get VP9 turned on for the ShotOnRed YouTube Channel. I developed the pipeline for www.youtube.com/YouTubeNation which is the first daily episodic 4K show in the world - happens to be shot on Red Scarlet ;)

As far as best specs for creating a 4K YouTube upload, here's a link to my personal Adobe Media Encoder preset that we use on the show everyday.

I'm working to determine what official VP9 specs and workflow info I'm allowed to share publicly, stay tuned for more.

So stoked that more 4K is coming to the YouTube platform and Red is helping to pave the way. The monetization capability alone for YouTube content creators is a huge win for the independent filmmaking community. And the 4K film community stands to have a MASSIVE ADVANTAGE as VP9 encoding is more widely deployed. And then there's the image quality of VP9 which is, well, killing the online video game...

The 4K I'm watching on YouTube Nation and ShotOnRed is better than broadcast by far. The future is officially now - daily content shot in 4K, with theatrical quality resolution, brings a new realization of imagery and detail trouncing legacy distribution capabilities - I'm looking at you big cable MSO's. I know the reduser community will shine super bright and shows off what REAL TALENT paired with THE BEST ACQUISITION TECHNOLOGY can produce!!!!!

Thanks so much for the preset. Is this hosted anywhere else other than Mega? I can not get it to download on either of my systems. Tried multiple browsers and it's a no go.

Cheers to that Peter! This sort of digital delivery is certainly outperforming what people get in their homes via the common broadcast methods. It's a shame too, because some of those shows certainly deserve better. So do the viewers. So do the content creators.

Piping VP9 into my UHD4K 70" set here has been looking fantastic. Once more people experience that it's going to be very, very hard to "desire" experiencing anything else.

Hey Matt, Peter's brother here. I just tested downloading the link successfully.

I'm using OSX 10.8.5 with Google Chrome browser.

thread pinned for future reference.
