  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We recently worked with YouTube engineers to enable 4K VP9 encoding, and we are very happy that all new 4k videos uploaded to select youtube channels will now be encoded with the updated VP9 Codec.

You guys need to try it out, It is a considerable improvement.

To celebrate we are launching our own official Youtube channel " Shot on RED ". If you would like to be considered to have your footage in the channel spotlight email us at youtube@red.com with a link.

Also, REDucation has been holding classes at the YouTube Space Los Angeles every other month and will be offering classes within YouTube's London, New York and Tokyo spaces later this year.

You are already a personality in motion picture technology history, Jarred, you know that (even if it is Brent to edit it :D) I am glad and proud for your achievements and to be able to say I am in touch with you since you were a kid yet, for about a decade now :-)

Just need to know how to create encoding stations efficiently, looking at an encode & QC play. The UHD/4K "standard" delivery codec is MIA. If VP9 is supported on mainstream toolsets, and, GPUs can be well utilized for the transcode math, scaling, etc during encodes any modern workstation with some high end GPUs should crunch pretty good.

Wouldn't it be ironic if VP9 became the standard for 4K deliverables just because nothing else is universal enough.

Sorry Brian just reminded me.. the newest codec has only rolled out to select channels ( including ours ) so you need to be on our channel if you want to check out the new codec. If you have something great you wanna test, just email using the youtube@red.com email a link and if its good we will upload it for you.
 
Peter and Jonathan Salvia from YouTube Nation have been our guides for VP9 and 4K on YouTube. They have built a rock solid workflow with Adobe for this daily youtube show - all of the studio spots are shot on SCARLET and uploaded in 4K. I will ask him to post some detail on their setup. Man, that codec efficiency is incredible compared to normal youtube. Congrats and great work!

As someone with an indie film out with sales agents at the moment and the nightmare that is delivering 4K at the moment, I hope this sort of endeavor will help us rush towards standards quicker!
 
This is good news. Things were quiet on the VP9 front for a good long while. Hopefully, The Goog can get some reference hardware designs finalized for decoders in the next three months. HEVC just twisted it's ankle due to licensing issues between the various companies in the MPEG-LA patent pool so it may not go wide until next year.
