Dialing it in

Dialing it in

When I am "popping" images in Red Alert for on set looky-loos I tend to have a similar curve and saturation push to Jim's, it sells. After everyone walks away I give it a tweak to regain shadow detail by nudging the curve (mostly around the toe), then I scrub to a colorful frame and dial back the satch until it looks dull, then come back north a smidge - bingo.

FWIW I think you want to show off the wonderful subtlety and smooth transitions the RedOne is capable of and trust that when displayed large any in focus shot should stand up for itself without an aggressive curve. YMMV.

Obviously stylistic grades are a separate discussion, this is about making the image full and rich for easy finishing.

Paolo what does it mean exactly "zzzz" in your replay to my posts second time exactly?

I do not want to make any further opinion/conclusion before I ask you directly for the answer about that...?!!!

I was just pitching all of us in a room sharing this very emotional footage, eagles, carcasses, desert island and you standing up to analyze metaphors, citing thinkers... and me snoring (zzz...)

It is not my intention to offend you and i dont think you brought boring arguments, it`s all up in my head and this image made me laugh.
Please consider I would do this only to a friend as i think you are after all this time together on this space. Even thou, as we say in Rome "we never had a coffe together..."

Paolo,

I can understand what you think.

Hope my "analysis" did not disturb you so much.

By the way I am more often in the northen Italy (Milan, Venice, Florence and Tuscany) than in Rome.

If ever you pass Vienna I could invite you for an excellent Italian espresso and of course for a chat about RED.

Buon Natale!

That close up is incredible. What's cool about shooting in 4K is you can print out that image and hang it on your wall.

Awesome stills! Thanks for sharing them, Jim.

Amazing! Really looking forward to the moving pictures.

Crisp focus. Were you using EVF or LCD, and did Greame's focus assist help?

I used a RED LCD and Graeme's MF.

I live in Irvine across the street from UCI and on Friday morning on my way to the parking lot, a Hawk had a blackbird or crow between his talons. He just burst out of a bush next to me and flew across the street with plenty of black bird buddies hounding him to get him to let go. You don't have to be in the wilds to see nature at its raw form. Startled the crap out of me.

It appears to me that when there is plenty of food around, the eagles and ravens get along pretty well. But there is no question that one eagle is the boss of 30 ravens. Interesting how that works...

saw the most beautiful lone coyote yesterday in a valley near my home. he must be finding some good things to eat this summer. his tail was fat and glossy. handsome fella.

c'mon RED...jump in my Christmas stocking....

these pictures almost make me want to sell my dSLRs--finally a camera that offers the best of both worlds.

Really nice, Jim! The detail and clarity is beautiful at 2K.

Any CCing done to this?

Hello Jim!

Great Shots! Im excited.

Just got a quick question - Ive also checked out your dragstrip shots also.

When shooting these -Did you just rock up pull your cam out and shot away?

As what im getting at is.. is it pretty easy to jam with in everyday sitautions? - people reaction ok with it etc..

As with not being film expense - be a great camera to experiment with - go for a walk/ drive shoot random urban/nature/people

Like with a 5d/1d etc..

Be nice to know your thoughts..

Thanks

Ash

Jim, may I say that RED one Camera head ( Not Bald though !!! ) can make those eagles and ravens clam down a bit ; fair enough for you to shooot them in a peaceful way with you Love and tenderness, and I'm sure you have got the positive thinking in front of them to show their real Live in nearly 5K digital picture.

I am looking forward in using my 1st RED one to capture an young elephant with 30 hungary lions surrounding him. Again, it's real too, same like your shots in another side of the world " Dead Cow " eaten by Eagles plus 30 ravnes.

Cheers,

Stewart

Shooting a RED ONE is not as easy as shooting a Canon 5D. It is a different experience. More like shooting an Arri 235. Stripped down, handheld is easy (but not like a DSLR). Loaded up, bring a tripod.

The images are worth the effort.

I've read that RED is a digital camera with the resolution of 65 mm film camera.

Also I have got impression that RED is like a certain film stock with 320 ASA.

So those two main things somebody could consider the most in a shooting with RED:

1. High resolution

and

2. Taking care to shoot 320 ASA moving images.

If you get to deal with both of that things from the beginning then you could get the most of the cam's value.

To conclude is to say that RED is a (PURE) film (MOVIE) camera that records digital (4K).

By the way you don't need D.I. in post.

You are already there (D.I.) from the beginning on.

Also if you need more like a "dynamic range" then get the fastest lens(es) as you can afford.

If you could "construct and build" Leica M mount for RED than you would get

KING OF THE NIGHT or SOMETHING BRIGHTER THAN THE HUMAN EYE

LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50 mm f/1:

"The Noctilux transmits light more effectively than even the human eye,
and as the world's first production f/1.0 lens for 35 mm photography,
it represents a landmark in the history of photography. Its outstanding
contrast sensitively differentiates subtle colors and its precise resolution
displays the finest of textures, even in highly unfavorable light. Maximum
correction for aberrations such as coma means that it delivers virtually
bleed-free reproduction of point light sources. This lens opens up to
photographers a unique and fascinating pictorial language. It is not only
outstandingly well suited to shooting in dim light, but also for night shots
without flash. The light from a candle is sufficient to produce outstanding
results. Specific image areas can be highlighted by means of its very shallow
depth of field at full aperture. In the soft-focus zones, this causes outlines to
dissolve into an almost abstract aesthetic of shapes and colors."

By the way Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC, like a "BIG HIT" cinematographer of 2007 year

of course uses

LEICA M lenses for his still photo work>>>LINK>>>

PHOTO and CINEMA (TOGRAPHY) is about the same thing.

And RED can have a chance to show it soon.

Jim,

Still interested in selling some of the eagle footage? Have a potential buyer in place. Contact me offline and let me know if you got some more good stuff out there. They are very serious about any kind of eagle footage they can get their hands on.
