  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Keep posting wildlife footage!!! It's a great demonstration of the camera and it's really nice work on your part. Keep on gunnin'. :gun:

That does look amazing, very, very sharp, what beautiful creature. If I keep on seeing such great images from the RED leses, I think I'll be forced to buy the 18-50 and the 50-150. I can live with the quirky mechanicals....

Yeah you seemed sort of upset, The next footage would've been of a carcass holding a receipt that said "#1520", I guess. Next time(?) I'll throw in a couple of emoticons to soften the blow.

(or maybe next time I'll write something a little more along the lines of "Awesome Footage! What lens did you use?" A popular, but less entertaining response (apparently just to me. What no Monty Python fans here?)).

I'm wondering if there is a generational difference in how people use online user forums. Where the older generation treats it more like old-fashioned paper letters and writes more to communicate, and the younger crowd treats it more like an online chat room and writes more for amusement. (?) :unsure:

another fantastic shot. that crow tentatively pecking at the kill while the eagle is distracted is priceless.

jim, what are you using to stablize the 300mm? this footage seems too stable to be hand-held (plus that's a big load...) but seems to have a little more play than the typical tripod shot.

you should check out this short video that my friend shot with his XL H1 with a long lens. he's an outstanding shooter, and it's a great camera. he shot a very, very nice short film with it, similar to what jim is showing us. but comparing the two sets of images shows just how great the RED is....

There's a chance of that, but I also think that's a fairly extreme reduction. The way a person might carry themselves in a "ProLife vs ProChoice" thread might vary differently from the "Holy Crap did you see I am Legend?!" thread, regardless of which generation they happen to fall into. A number of other variables also kick in, such as the time of the post, their emotional state, the post they are responding to, etc etc.

I kind of go back and forth myself. If I find that if the messages are overwhelmingly of type a, even if my instinct was to respond "a", then I would go with "b", just to minimize redundancy, if that makes any sense. If, for example, everyone had made jokes in this thread, I would've stopped and pointed out "Hey, in case you missed it, that's a really phenomenal shot. Isn't it interesting that someone who clearly appreciates technology also has a similar appreciation for nature? How rare is that?" But that perspective is overwhelmingly present, and would just register as a blip on anyone's radar, if at all. So instead I'm like "I wonder if I can make a couple complete strangers laugh." (or, apparently, irk one. But, that wasn't the intent).

I just did a quick re-scan of this particular thread, just to see what the break down was from the inciting (!) post.

There were
9 posts which all said essentially the same thing ("Great Shot")
4 more that said "Great shot" with a minor technical question
4 entertainment messages
7 post-entertainment fall-out messages
1 Super Serious The Message and the Medium message
3 post Super Serious fallouts.

What does this information tell us?

Nothing really.

But it was vaguely interesting for a split second.

I slowly worked my way close to this guy with my inconspicuous 300mm... shot 4K, 24fps, 1/60th shutter, about f8, from about 12'. He got nervous (finally) and flew off after I grabbed about 10 seconds of footage. His buddies were screaming at him to "get the hell out of there"...

I have to wonder how many people have been 12' from a bald eagle...

Jim,

Any sharpening, contrast or color correction applied or is this pure RAW? And were you hauling your inconspicous tripod as well or was it hand held? I like these images really, what can I say, they look beautiful. That RED glass ain't half bad....
 
I had a tripod along with the 300mm... wish I could have handheld this! This eagle was either very brave or very naive. Or maybe just a ham.

All I did in post was to add a bit of saturation and a curve. I'll post a movie of this close-up pretty soon. The RAW file is always flat. Actually, when I grade the clip, I'm going to add less of a curve and saturation. These are a bit much.
