  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

You are all Invited....

David I agree, there probably are many more lurking, maybe Red user could open a women's only sub forum that only the women can post in, that would solve the problem.

About using false names, only "real names" are supposed to be used (do they specify who's real name :) ) unlike those "official" names of, some, people around here ;) . I mean Jarred's last name is it Mr Land.

I have heard the Tropicana has redone every single room recently...

A Red One in every single room? :wink5:

Now we know what you guys are doing with them.

For my entire life, it has been my deep frustration that every social group I manage to participate in has far more men than women, and therefore I am permanently single :(. But I have to say that even among the laughably female free set of groups I've participated in, REDUser takes the cake.

LOL

You've obviously never attended the NAB show: aside from the occasional "booth babe," it's 35 football fields' worth of sausage fest ...

HOTELS
**Note: Michael Cioni of Light Iron posts a little after this that a hotel has not been official pinned down for the event. Rumors of the Tropicana being the hotel are unconfirmed. While booking in advance of NAB is a very good idea, you may wish to wait to find out the event location, if you plan on or would like to be within an easy walk of the party.

The Tropicana has undergone a multi-million dollar renovation and is a much nicer place than it had been in the years prior. While still a C-class hotel on the Strip, it's got very cost effective meeting spaces, a totally overhauled pool and outside areas, and generally nicer rooms thanks to the recent update. Bonus, East-side facing towers overlook the "Janet Airport" and have a good view to one of the executive terminals. But being in Vegas, staying on property is definitely not a requirement.

If you want something that's recently renovated and very cost effective, the Tropicana and the across-the-street neighbor, Excalibur, are both great choices. Make sure you spend the extra $10-20/night at Excalibur to get the newest rooms. It's worth the small cost to upgrade.

If you're looking for something over-the-top fun, you cannot beat the brand-new Cosmopolitan, saddled between City Center and the Bellagio. Incredible rooms with stunning wrap-around balcony views. Bonus: Because the Cosmopolitan was originally built to be condos, every unit has an economy kitchen and washer/dryer. Accessible by pedestrian bridge to Planet Hollywood and an easy walk down the Strip to the Tropicana, MGM, New York New York, etc.

One of the best kept secrets in Las Vegas is the little-known Jockey Club. It's a vacation suite rental property that can comfortably sleep a group of 6 people with a kitchen, washer/dryer, and more -- all for a very cheap price. The rooms overlook the Bellagio fountains and the Club is located within steps of the Strip, crammed in between the Cosmopolitan Hotel and the Bellagio. It's a very simple structure to overlook and it never appears on most of the hotel search websites. A large family or a small business can put up here for a week at a comparably cheap rate and still enjoy a prime location with a great view.

City Center is a little pricey but the on-property benefits are unequaled. Lots of great gaming, dining, drinking, lunching, and show/nightclub areas. The Vdara is at the back of the complex and it is the least generally accessible from the Strip (approximately 15 minute walk to get onto the Strip from Vdara). Aria is a little closer and has both front and back valet and cab entrances plus extensive self parking (all free of course). The Mandarin is right on the Strip, somewhat hidden by a little sub-level valet cove. Steps from the Strip.

If you want all top-scale upper class, go with the Mandarin Oriental. It's an incredible property with no gaming inside and the entire place oozes sensuality. The Mandarin Oriental, like Aria, Veer, and Vdara, is part of the multi-building area called "City Center". It features some of the most stunning architecture in the world and it's going to be a long while before anything quite like it gets built in the U.S. again. Even if you decided to camp somewhere cheaper, City Center can't be missed.

Skip the Wynn/Encore and anything else on the far Northern end of the Strip, if you want to be an easy cab ride or walk from the RED party. The properties are aging, overpriced, and just not as fun as the stuff around the center of the Strip (Cosmopolitan, Bellagio, City Center, Planet Hollywood, Paris, etc) or the more economical South-end (New York New York, Tropicana, MGM, Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay).

If you would prefer to be on Fremont Street, you can find incredible hotel deals but much seedier venues and traveling overall. The Golden Nugget has also undergone renovations and they have great rooms and a very impressive pool deck, but while the room rate is cheaper than most highway motels, you'll be a lengthy cab ride from the RED action.

FOOD
Dining options always change but these are the best, not only on the Strip, but in the world right now:
- STK (Cosmopolitan, steakhouse)
- Strip Steak (Mandalay Bay, steakhouse)
- L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon (MGM, french)
- Twist by Pierre Gagnaire (Mandarin Oriental, french)
- Barmasa (Aria, japanese)
- Blue Ribbon (Cosmopolitan, seafood/sushi)

For quick bites, check out China Poblano (Cosmopolitan), Bootlegger's Bistro (off-Strip 24/7 fine dining Italian), Joe's New York Pizza (late night in-room delivery), The Sugar Factory (open 24/7 with full menus, inside of Paris), MoZen (a mix of japanese and indian dishes, Mandarin Oriental), and every Saturday night, in a parking lot outside of Tommy Rocker's bar (behind City Center, next to Panorama Towers and near the I-15 and Flamingo Rd, West exit) there is a congregation of amazing food trucks featuring supremely top-notch dishes of all varieties. There are always a minimum of 4 trucks there and each is amazing, 4 and 5 star dining, on a paper plate and a budget. Great atmosphere. Free to carry your plates into the Tommy Rockers bar for gaming, pool, live music, comedy, and more. Great fun on a late Saturday night.

NIGHTCLUBS
If nightclubs are your thing, XS and Surrender (both at the Wynn/Encore) are stunning. Second runners up are Marquee (Cosmopolitan) and Tao (Venetian). Lavo on Saturday has an amazing day-time brunch with a full-fledged club atmosphere. Go-gos, costumes, world-known DJs, great food, pounding club music... all in the middle of the afternoon.

If you need assistance getting into a club, let me know. As the saying goes, "Only tourists and suckers wait in line to get into a club."

DRINKS
For late-night drinks, find the secret entrance to Savile Row (Luxor), make the long trip to the old downtown area (Fremont Street) and stop into the Downtown Cocktail Room (frequented by Zappos founder...) and not a block away, INSERT COIN(S) -- the nerdiest gaming heaven on the planet. A full-featured arcade, nightclub, console table service (with bottles), performances, and something like 100+ free standing arcade machines. Rent a controller at the bar and play on a "personal" 40" LCD... the place is wild. Also consider the off-Strip favorite, The Artisan hotel for an incredibly cool bar and outside patio. They even have after-hours "too tired to go home" super-cheap room rates (ask the bartender) and the rooms are each customized by an individual artist. Maybe not family friendly however as the TV's play free "classic porn" from the 80's and 90's.

After crashing the clubs and hanging out all hours, get your hangover relief at the Peppermill and the adjoining Fireside Lounge. Local secret: Fireside is the perfect closer for a late date and if you ask for the unlisted drink, "THE SCORPION", you'll kill in a small party.

For the most eclectic bar in Vegas, check out the Double Down Saloon. Remember to buy a round of "house specialty shots" for your party. The bathroom doors don't lock, the billiard greens are worse off than an Atlantic City mini-putt course, the floor boards are loose and creak with the smacking of dumped mix drinks, the late crowd is rowdy, a mop sits in the corner daring someone to get sick (you spill it, you clean it), the walls and ceiling are covered in graffiti, the jukebox plays Frank Sinatra and Operation Ivy (with everything in-between) and the crowd is, at any moment, punk, business-class, corporate hawk, gay, barfly, doe-eyed tourist, or any other style that can be imagined. It really is, as the plate on the door says, "The Happiest Place on Earth."

For the best skyline views, check out the once-secret Foundation Room (overlooks Tropicana, top-floor of Mandalay Bay) or lesser favorites, Ghost Bar (Palms) or the Voodoo Lounge (Rio). The Foundation Room also serves up a good late dinner menu and tapas at the bar. Private rooms for reservation are still some of the best late-night-business spots in the city.

The Deuce inside of Aria and Heart Bar at Planet Hollywood are both great "center bars", located on the casino floors. Chandelier Bar (Cosmopolitan) is every girl's favorite and Bond Bar (first floor of Cosmopolitan) is a visual-synth dream, but the crowd is a toxic "broke and lonely college guy tourist" hangout.

FILMING
If you want to make that work deduction a little more square, incredible shooting locations are; Red Rock Canyon, Spring Mountain Motorsports Club (Pahrump), The Valley of Fire (amazing), Lake Meade Recreational Area + Hoover Dam, and Lake Las Vegas. The infamous Las Vegas "neon graveyard" has restrictions on shooting and a limited use guideline plus per diem, per setup. Everywhere in Vegas requires shooting permits to lay down sticks -- expect the inquisition if you try and shoulder a full kit. Get your permit in advance:

Any other questions? Of course hit me with a PM if you want to come by our studio, located right on the Strip and in the heart of City Center. We're considering throwing a small event during NAB, once the big schedules shake out.

Other impressive studios in town are Levy Productions, MG Studio, and DAV Productions.

If you need gear rentals, contact JR Lighting (http://www.jrlighting.com/rental-catalog.php) or for RED specific equipment, Cohencidence Productions (http://www.cohencidence.com). I do not rent out gear but will consider collabs.

For people coming in to visit Las Vegas for this event specifically, here's some good details you may be interested in:

Thanks Rob!

Leads for permits was very helpful - It's strange how when I've shot in China, Cuba… pretty much anywhere on the planet; I often don't bother with permits. However whenever I travel to the U.S. with camera gear and plan to shoot - location permits, and paperwork to get camera gear (and myself) into the U.S. is super important.

for those connecting out of other towns, i booked through southwest and ended up paying less for flight and hotel than the hotel on its own.... bizarre

REDUser NAB 2012 UPDATE

REDUser NAB 2012 UPDATE

We're currently building the official REDUSER NAB website, which will contain all the details about the event (registration / location / agenda / policies). We believe that all of the questions raised in the previous posts will be answered on the site. We'll announce on REDUser when the site launches, which is scheduled for early February.

This year, we're establishing an official REDUser NAB HOTEL so that the REDUser Community continues socializing and networking beyond our party on Sunday. There's plenty to discuss after walking the NAB's halls for 4 days, and we want to encourage those conversations amongst members of the Community. We're negotiating with potential hotels RIGHT NOW in order to get preferential room rates for every REDUser who stays there. We'll give you the details as soon as they're finalized.

Finally, we're organizing a 4K contest for the REDUser NAB Party that I think you will all find VERY EXCITING. Again, details will be announced when the site launches in early February, but here's a hint: you better start reserving your cameras, dusting off your lenses, charging your batteries, and making sure you have enough SSDs to make create some original content for screening in 4K at the party for all to see.

REDUser NAB 2012 is going to be a memorable one. That I am confident of.

Michael

Good to hear! Did not realize the hotel had not been pinned down yet. I kept reading Tropicana being mentioned. I'll edit my "little" post above to note this.

Sounds good Michael! Booking the same hotel as the venue would be a major plus. :)
