Hi all,

I've previously posted stills from the short I was working on over the last months and people have come up with some great ideas for grades. Final day of shooting yesterday and with the lighting and grip budget being blown ages ages we were stuck with practical tungsten mirror lights and a couple of LEDs so this stuff doesn't quite have the production values of the earlier stuff. Nonetheless I thought I'd stick it out there and see if anyone wants to have some fun with them.

Photobucket has done some very horrible things to my uploaded jpegs shown here, so apologies in advance.

All shot on Scarlet with Black Pro Mist 1/8 filter. Lens details below each pic.

The scene is the dressing room of a jaded and faded celebrity chef, and the somewhat more grimy corridor outside.

HI Ben,
here some fun...
to me your grabs seem a litle bit underexposed, so i think there is some noise in your grabs.
i love the grab of the Little Boy.
Thank you for sharing
Marinus

Hey Marinus,

Yes they were all fairly underexposed and purely with tungsten light too so a bit of noise was always going to be there. In the context of the film - the scene preceeding it being very bright HMI-lit cookery show scene and the one following it - nice bright sunny day - it will be quite a nice place for it to have a bit of a grungey and grimy feel, even if in an ideal world I would have had to tools to light properly.

Was that last image you posted in my zips? It's not mine so I must have accidentally downloaded from here to grade and then rezipped it! In fact, I think it's a DRagon R3D still!

Edit: here is better more freckels, low how it's possible to separate the tonalities in the skin.

Goof god Bjorn. Way to crash blacks and use, oh so predictable, teal black tones. I'm bored already. Better stick with what you know Bjorn and leave color grading to the professionals. Oh yeah, I forgot, you think all colorists just know how to do one thing only, unlike you knowitall…
BTW Bjorn, still waiting for you to answer my question:-)

I'd politely ask that cross-thread arguments were left elsewhere. Really not in the spirit of this forum to derail other people's threads in that way.

Like that first image Bjorn - You got a much more balanced image out of the R3D than I could. The 2nd one is a bit strong on the clarity slider for me but the first one works really well I think.

Jake, I'd love to see what you can come up with if you have a spare moment.

Your right, that was quite ugly I have to agree.

Is this one better Master Jake? Or is just as predictable and boring? The other ones I pushed out of redcine and some of the odd contrast I blame my mac or Flickr got some odd conversions going to flicker as jpg. This one was baked in the modular keyer as a tiff wich worked a bit better.

So if you have them time, please it would be great to have more of your feed back. As you are a real colorist and all.

Lovely stuff Bjorn. Great work.

My first try. Difficult to grade non mooving images...

Pat

Love it Patrick. A more stylised look that could work really well I think. Certainly looks a far cry from how it shot and I'd never have thought it was all under tungsten balanced light.
