  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

X264 vs. H264...

If some one doesn't figure this stuff out.. we will.

Jim

Please do. I entered the Apple world for FCP, but am not sure I want to continue investing any more in that technology and would like to X-it it completely. Go back to PCs and low cost.

Ok.. i have a question for you guys. For a 2K downloadable version of this at badass quality..... be it X264 or PRORES or DNXhd... what is the maximum file size you guys would put up with to download? 1GB? 2GB? 4GB?

p.s... just looked at handbrake. Looks good but incredibly restrictive as already mentioned... any other suggestions?

1GB for me, that is my vote

am I the only one seeing a flicker at around 5:09? Not sure if it's my lap-top, the compression or an unseen candle...

Nope, I noticed it too. I was wondering the same thing. It really only seemed apparent from one of the two coverage shots which made me think it was in camera but I find that hard to believe. It didn't seem like a candle either. Maybe compression? Definitely distracting, if only momentarily.

Very impressive low key lighting. James Hong is too cool. Was HDRx used? Guess wouldnt be needed since the range doesnt appear to be vast but who knows... couple bright practicals in some shots.

Thats a new one for me... but again, it is so frustrating jumping through all these hoops. There was a day you could depend on PRORES being correct for a short period of time after they released it.. now its just as messed up as everything else in the Quicktime domain.

Quicktime simply should not be considered a delivery format. You can control QT within the production environment if you know how, but you simply cannot count on the end user being able to do that.

I deal with this every day in producing deliverables for corporate clients. For delivery, H.264 in an mp4 package seems to be the best available choice at the moment. It scales really well so you can use the same codec for cell phones or for digital cinema (most codecs are optimized for a small range of sizes). It has one other big advantage: compatibility. It'll play in Windows Media Player, through Flash, in QT player, Youtube, Vimeo, and MPEG-4 both Simple Profile and H.264 are the only formats compatible with video iPods, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, so if that's part of your target it's the only choice.

Beautiful work on Tattoo!

Not to get off the topic of codecs, but the camera crossed the line of action at time 1:46, while the protagonist was seated at the table. Made me think he had swapped chairs or had superpowers for a second, but then I went back and realized it was probably just an oversight. Anyhow, lovely cinematography - many thanks for getting it posted!

Best,
Tim

Now that I think about it: does anyone know which lenses this was shot on? If it's been mentioned, just point me towards the info. Thanks!

It doesn't seem like pro video is Apple's focus these days... and the new Final Cut seems like it raised more concerns (http://gizmodo.com/#!5793175/why-final-cut-pro-x-is-sending-me-back-to-avid). We may be headed back to the days where the Apple products are only for consumers.

Redray

Redray

Looks great. Can't wait to get a redray and have you post the video in 4k. forget h264 and x264 :-).

No it doesn't. That's a simple POV shot. The line cross is at 1:04, but it's arguably an acceptable one...

When a character suddenly and mysteriously changes direction, it confuses the viewer. One might debate which shot should be considered as establishing the current line, but the important thing is to avoid that confusion.

Best,
Tim

The flickering, from what I can tell, is intentional and is (or meant to be) candlelight. Perhaps the compression is making it look more artificial. It can be seen to varying degrees from 5:09, as you pointed out, to 6:30, so it's not a momentary thing. But, it only appears on the left side of the actor's faces (screen right). I doubt compression artifacts would be that selective and smart enough to know there are candles in the scene ;-) I guess it could be argued that the compression is somehow affecting only the brightest part of the scene, but the flickering is also only affecting the left side of the gun holder's hat at 5:15, which is basically the same brightness as the right side of his hat, which isn't flickering. Then again, I could be wrong.

Just viewed the film...great stuff, congratulations to the whole team.

On a mac I saw a big difference between viewing it in Quicktime Player and VLC....this on a calibrated monitor (HP LP2480zx). It was darker (too dark in my opinion) in VLC.

On the Handbrake front, I've tried to import .mov files and all I get is "No valid source found".... does anyone know why?

I thought this short film was brilliant on several levels. The technical aspects are wonderful and have been discussed a bit on this thread. But I find the story line to be quite intriguing and cannot wait for the sequel as well as the prequel. Praises go out to Bill Paxton and Daniel Hsia.

The characters that were not specifically listed in the credits were most compelling:
- The tattoo: a red dragon
- The "last person who wore this" and was never heard from again

The sequel, the story of the hero who has just gotten the tattoo, is setup by;
- "legend tells of a day when a descendent will ......."

The prequel, the story of the past hero, is setup by;
- "mythical power that no one had ever seen"
- "but the world ... the world was unprepared"

The fact that this was accomplished in the time frame that it was is absolutely amazing. Congratulations to the TEAM that pulled this off.

Maybe so. On my screen it seemed more strobe-ish than flicker. Wasnt a big enough deal that I stopped and went back to examine it. I only mentioned it here to let Liam know hes not taking crazy pills...

I was more curious to the cool patern they used on the key light at the card table. Nice.

...The sound is out of sync though. It was even before I uninstalled my codecs, and it happens in both Windows Media Player 7 and Media Player Classic HomeCinema.

The sound is out of sync for me as well in Win Media Player, but it plays fine in VLC. Win7 64-bit.

Wow, great actors, great story, great look! I downloaded it to my Win XP machine and it played smoothly, except the sound was out of sync. Not that I was watching the sound.

Please fix it. :)

Please fix it. :)

PLEASE DO! I fucking beg you... I don't know how h264 became a standard. Prores is not as bad but still has shifting issues and is impractical for web use... I don't know why apple (or anyone else for that matter) has not addressed these issues, compressor in FCS 3 is horrible. We need a solution. Also Tattoo looks amazing!
