  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

X264 vs. H264...

DNX is max 1080P. But I would only use this to encode to something else.

The quality you have encoded to is more than acceptable and I can't see any banding what so ever, if anything it is very sharp!! Why don't you upload a 1080p Prores file to VIMEO? At least people would not have to download it and also it will stream.

Again I make al ot of content and online a lot of content that ends up on ITUNES. I always export a quicktime reference to Sorrenson Squeeze then encode.

Apple are more than happy with this and the content always looks good.

I would go for prores 4444 ,I don't care about file size but some people are.
the average is prores 422 for the best you can get not the maximum.

p.s... just looked at handbrake. Looks good but incredibly restrictive as already mentioned... any other suggestions?

I just went back and checked.

When I uploaded the Scarlet Chicken footage to Vimeo, in order to maintain maximum fidelity on my side, I exported full res to Quicktime Animation from RedCine and then fed this into HandBrake and exported to 1080p at @35000. I guess you could choose any bitrate.

I do feel your pain, but at some point we need to let go when it comes to web distribution. If I had any possibility I'd love to come see what you've got at your place @4k.

My current situation doesn't permit that though. Maybe some day?

Any time...

Maybe we should have a bit of a Bake-off.. If I provide a 2k ProRes LT ( for bandwidth sake ), and see how close you guys can get to it in your various methods of X264 encode... Thoughts?

I use animation codec aswell, then select constant quality RF 1. Much better results than sorenson squeeze.
I'll try dv kitchen though.

If some one doesn't figure this stuff out.. we will.

While ya there creating a new codec, knock out a REDCINE X with Resolve controls and a new edit program...

I dare you :)

Just kidding, we all know your trying to get cameras out the door.. but a nice idea.

Jarred,
Thanks for the 1K compressed file, but as everyone else here - I'd also like to watch a 2K version of it.
I believe a 2GB file should be fine for most, as long as your server(s) can handle the load.

Current 1K file specs:
Video: x264, 1024x540p, 23.976fps, 9:08 minutes, 3870kbps average bitrate, YUV 4:2:0 8-bit
Audio: AAC, 2ch stereo, 320kbps, 48KHz
File size: 275MB

Expected 2K file specs:
Video: x264, 2048x1080p, 23.976fps, 9:08 minutes, 15,000kbps average bitrate, YUV 4:2:0 8-bit
Audio: AAC, 2ch stereo, 320kbps, 48KHz
file size: I think that with these settings, it amounts to 1.1GB

Yes, please give us a 2K version to hammer the sh… out if it with various encodings. Why not ProRes? It's so wide-spread these days. Even if there are those pesky gamma problems, it would be interesting to see if the community will come up with a reliable method to get it encoded. I don't favor Animation, it's RGB and 8 bit only and has it's own set of problems under QT, like YUV-RGB-YUV conversions.

sounds good guys... Ill render it out overnight and upload it tomorrow... this should be fun.

one rule.. no creative decisions on color or brightness... if you guys try and change the way we chose to present this movie, I will hunt you down and cut your nuts off :)

deal?

downloading now...
x264 being better is nothing new ... they continuously won codec tests in the past years
Filesize doesn't matter to me, as long as an fast enough download is available.

Matt
P.S.: I recommend MPC-Homecinema+MadVR+yCMS (for color management) for playback in Windows
(Download K-Lite Codec Pack if you are missing codecs)
