  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Woah the SCARLET is the real deal, BEST CAMERA available today & it will Dominate.

I really can't figure out why people are so confused over the benefit of 4k vs 1080 acquisition. Have you not seen the way a 4k film scan on Bluray (say, True Grit for example) looks vs. footage shot at 1080, then encoded, so forth. If you can't see the differences of subtle detail, I'm not sure what else to say!

Yes Brant, you are so spot on! It is also very funny to me as well but I've been posting/mastering films mostly as a film restoration operator for years. Great to see you're impressed Big Lu and that you obviously feel the SPEC IS REAL which is the main issue! Glad to see you're making so much personal progress since I last saw you at the Santa Fe 3d last Dec. Tried to send you a message twice but this crazy server still says it has sent nothing so I'll just post...

4K Uploads are available already, good for the future of course but as of now most of our audiences will have to choose lower resolutions until ISP's provide way more bandwidth to handle it.

Try playing one of these at the "original" setting and not 1080p etc.

I've seen 4K on YouTube before but it's still not really the easiest thing to download in certain parts of the world.

If it were possible to encode 4K to 1080p size files without killing the quality too much then that's be awesome because YouTube is another round of encoding

Essentially the REDCode equivalent for online content,
Not a lot of compression if any but smaller file sizes then uncompressed

I love the fact that just owning one makes me a DP and gets me work just because I have it. Producers want the RED even if the don't know how it compares with other cameras. Please, please, please, spread the incredible hype of the OP far and wide so I'll get more work.

The very best camera you can purchase anywhere for under $40,000 is a Scarlet.
I own multiple EPICS so to see the Scarlets footage made me a 150% believer.

To this point I have personally seen EPIC 5K - 4K - 3K and 2K footage presented on multiple 4K projectors on screens bigger than most theaters.
I should know what size the screen is at RED studios but i don't. You just have to believe me its HUGE.
Someone in here will give me that size soon im sure.

Its no secret that the EPIC footage is as good as it gets. Only film can do what this footage can achieve on the screen.
REDone has been king of resolution till the EPICs arrival.

Anyhow my point is this.

I have shot for 2 days on the Scarlett and seen projected in 4K on this huge screen I don't have words for it, perhaps WHOLLY SHIT!!! ?

You can mark my words and bring them up later any time you want.
Some of the ABSOLUTE best looking movies that will come out over the next several years will be shot on SCARLET.
Im talking HUGE big budget, low budget, no budget, successful, award winning, popular, 2D & 3D Features, Music Videos, Commercials and wholly CRAP so many TV shows, will be on Scarlet.
This camera will dominate the market at all levels.
Make no mistake about it.

The 6 to 1 compression, 4K resolution, 24FPS on screen with PL Glass and even Canon glass is as good as FILM and or EPIC. YA I SAID IT.
YOU WILL NOT again YOU WILL NOT be able to tell the difference. Put up 10 images of each on the screen and you wont be able to tell me which is which.
Put the Scarlet in the hands of a DP who can shoot, and a Colorist whom can grade and its OVER.

It is by a land slide the absolute best camera anywhere in the world for under $40,000 USD.

The Quantum shift forward that the DVX-100 did for guys like me with little money over a DECADE ago.
( THANK YOU Mr. BERRY GREEN for teaching me all you did )
The REVOLUTION that camera did for independent guys working out of there bedrooms, will have a 2nd coming.
This Is the same thing the Scarlet will do for the world.

The field is now even when it comes to the tools in your hands.

A Scarlet for under 10K or Canon package for under 15K is untouchable by any camera manufacture anywhere.

I don't even know what to say.
Its the Power of an EPIC in the palm of your hand. ( im talking 24fps )

For the price point there is nothing else to consider at all.
No contest, not even a discussion.

So many of your guys dreams are gonna come true.

LUCKY BASTARDS.

I knew and always felt it would be great. But this is something different.

NO BS.

Luis

I don't think owning a Scarlet or an Epic makes you a DP. They are very well built tools, but certainly not a "free ride".

You have to have the skills to be given that title. A carpenter is not just a person with a hammer. :-\

This is getting ridiculous.

I heard the same thing for peeps using a 5D. The result was just terrible.

well for now, all one can do is to convert to 1080p before uploading. It will be way better than material that started with 1080p. 4k to 1080p is like 35mm to 1080P. Heck even 4k to 16:9 DVD looks like 35

Guys this HAS to be a wind up - it's a shame sarcasm doesn't translate very well on the internet! Made me laugh at least :)

The Scarlet is a tool. An amazing one at that. I agree with Luis that at 24fps you won't be able to tell the difference between a Scarlet, an Epic, or almost anything else for that matter.

But it's a tool.

Just like the 5D was a tool.

I've seen plenty of TERRIBLE things shot on the 5D/7D.

And truth be told, I've seen lots of pretty embarrassing things shot on the RED.

Cinema is a LANGUAGE. It's a CRAFT. And owning the tools alone does NOT make one a master.

A DP who knows what they are doing can make a 5D look better an amateur with a Scarlet.

Because its all the LITTLE thing that make a difference - the framing, the lighting, the blocking, the pacing.

Something only time, experience, and talent can give you.

I'm very wary of those who think the Scarlet will be some shortcut to technique. It won't be. It may help you learn faster, it may help you cheat (you can reframe, you can grade problems out), but nothing will replace knowing how to use it properly.

Having financed and directed countless of my own jobs, I can tell you that all my mistakes have taught me more than anything else. It's been a tough battle. At the time I didn't REALIZE I was making a mistake (you never do), but I just don't believe there is such a thing as cutting the line. Otherwise, what would be the point?

Happy shooting.

The camera does not make the movie - and aesthetics are open to opinion. The story for a particular film might even dictate what it is shot on - which may not be a crystal clear 4K resolution. Just saying, one size does not fit all.

Guys! You must watch this!

I just got hold of some spy footage of Peppa unboxing the Scarlet X! I would really like to know this dude's order number. What's intriguing is that it was all shot with another 4K camera that should be hitting the market in January 2012. One thing is clear, as I suspected the Scarlet's menus are far too complicated:
