  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

will we see new firmware for DSMC2???

I hope RED gets together with DSMC2 users to narrow down any bugs, missing features, and potential improvements that can be squeezed out of the platform in a bid to make it complete, whole, and maintain trust with the user base.

It should be clear though that every camera (if not tech) manufacturer has a point where they can either no longer support older hardware or there are resource limits to how much they can devote to legacy hardware to keep improving it.
In other words, let's not fall into any false narrative that this is an issue specific to RED.

Like the article states, no more DSMC2 camera brains or packages on the RED website.

That's the end of an era then, if it means the DSMC2 camera line has in fact been unceremoniously dumped.

The ROI and resale value ramifications of that don't bother me personally and I get the need to move forward with DSMC3. I still think it's a pity such capable camera's are no longer available to people new.

DSMC3 seems to have DSMC2 pretty much covered sensor-wise though, apart from 'flavour' or 'character' differences/preferences and perhaps for some odd out there uses. So I don't see any real loss there in terms of basic image-capturing. Not sure how significant the difference between DCT and Wavelet is for people though. Upgrades aside, the prices have never been better either.

The only camera I could see filling in a gap in the DSMC3 lineup is a Komodo+ or a Raptor with Komodo sensor.

But man, there's some catching up to do for DSMC3 when it comes to firmware features and bullet-proof accessorizing compared to DSMC2, even factoring in the requests that never made it into DSMC2.

Glad I was there for DSMC1 and 2, that was some amazing shit.

I will keep my monstro until I die. I'm also sad that my dsmc1 dragon got stolen. No joke, I think they both would be very nice memory things to have on the shelf when old and retired.
 
I have similar feelings towards a classic battleship-grey DSMC1 Scarlet-Dragon that I traded in during the upgrade programs. In hindsight I could have kept it and it would have kept making awesome images until it became a nostalgia piece in its own right. But, whatever.
 
I am keeping my S35 Epic-X MX till it dies. Same with the quasi S16 Raven. These cameras produce wicked images and are rock solid cameras. The prices on DSMC1 components continue to pop up for good prices and in some cases brand new. Again, I have all I need with these cameras. Now that the DSMC2 is about to get a shove down the price ladder only makes me happier to get some of those modules I have had my eye on for a while. Basically these cameras have payed for themselves over and over and continue to make great images that make me good money. The investments lay elsewhere for me. My 2c worth.
 
I’m in favor of a petition to address firmware updates. I’ve been investing in RED since the EPIC then DRAGON and currently on HELIUM. I found quite frustrating that RED didn’t give us a possibility to upgrade from DSMC2 to DSMC3. I think this will fire back at them. Personally I’m still quite happy with the image capabilities of the Helium. It’s a future proof sensor. DSMC2 it’s far from dead. RED please don’t disappoint loyal costumers.
 
Ah, so classy) When I bought my first RED cam - it was a Scarlet MX (I bought it used), - in a short moment RED stated that they don't support DSMC1 repairs any more. It was a bummer for me, who invested 10K+ $ into a cam that rapidly became non-repairable (it was less than 5 years old as a model back then). I've had several issues after, that I want to mention - I've got one redmag corrupt - and bought a spare one on a used market later. But the problem is that years pass - and those spare mags on used market also get old and no one will give any warranty that those will last at all. Like, I won't invest anymore in DSMC1 lineup not because of me being not satisfied with the image, but because of a forced limitations on accessories that I can't buy anymore. Like all of us know that redmags are just a regular SSD thanks to Jinny, but still, after all those years - they don't allow no one to make spare ones and don't sell them themself, which is silly. I don't know another camera system where memory cards are a problem to buy. And this is a base thing to provide normal production service - bulletproof medial reliability, which was always ok with my cams - but not today.

Then was the Raven, that was dumped without any fuss a couple years after. DSMC2 was going to be next and I knew things are gonna be the same this time. Yes, V-Raptor and Komodo are dirt cheap (which is also really bad for those old buyers who's investments have become nothing in a moment), but it's a policy that really ruins the belief that investing money into RED is a good idea at all. I do really love my cams, and have chosen to buy them despite all cons (bad rental value, higher end doesn't want to work with RED or R3D on local market, fan noise that was really bad for sound jobs) because I loved to work with those cams and those were the only cams that I wanted to own at the moment. But the moment has passed, and today I'm really considering is RED my next cam to buy after my EPIC M died recently? I think I will switch to ARRI AMIRA instead.
 
It is hard to say definitively what the future holds for the DSMC2. It is possible that some of the issues that have yet to be resolved could eventually be addressed, although it is unlikely that we will see any major updates or additions to the product.
