there are still issues to be resolved. some small some more important? will we ever see DSMC2 ability to adjust EVF ? will the playback bugs be unlocked. Will we see 3ed pary media?.... or no one cares and DSMC2 is truly EOL product?
what do you guys think?

The firmware has slown down in general.... I would love to see DSMC2 continue to get an update but doubt it..... Even the newer bodies are not getting the rapid updates that we have grown to love...

we are waiting for some updates for yers now. One of the most frustrating things in the DSMC2 world is EVF. Red decided to adjust the the thing for us and to protect us from "unnecessary adjustments" for some of us EVF is absolute must and i dont understand how come i have paid 4500$ for the EVF and another 40K for the camera and yet i cant have basic control. This issue is so bad that i actually have to have 2 EVF as old Bomb is dub better for B&W work (i do a lot IR )... this mess is a firware issue and i am sure they could have figured this out.
there are bugs in playback in 2x anamorphic 4:3 that are there for 2 or 3 last updates...

I feel that Red dont care about DSMC2 any more and that we, old users, are force pushed in to DSMC3 system. I have a feeling that my Monstro is totally devaluated and pusshed in to be EOL I feel that really soon i will enter in to the domain of vintage electronics. It sucks as i still have potent camera but i dont know how long will i have support in order to use this system.
Hardware question is equally frustrating: What happens what happens when my monitro brakes or when i need to buy 3 more Minimags? what are the alternatives? Buying a stuff of the eBay or buying obsolete 10$ SSD drives form Red for 1000$ a pop ?? this can be resolved with the new firmware for sure. unlock it and call it a day. I have a feeling bad gut feeling that Red will starve us and that Media will become the biggest problem of this system really soon.

if we dont have new media, new firmware, if we are not able to use new monitors .... I feel that i am forced to abandon DSMC2 and that i need to sale my Monstro for peanuts in order to buy it to a new DSMC3 that is still not giving me EVF or not even allow me to use my DSMC2 EVF over new Pogo adapteur. Buying new Raptor XL and using it with a Zacutio EVF is step in the DSLR passt and something that i am not willing to do.

Finally there is the question of reliability: I trust DSMC2 system as i have had used the cameras over the yers in some of the harshest environments on the planet. we have leaned first had how stabile and trust worthy DSMC2 cameras are.

Red has no respect for the older cameras that they made and i just hope that firmware and media wont be a reason for DSMC2 euthanasia

I also think that we DSMC2 owners have to be vocal about this and that we have to make clear to Red that we expect that they provide us with options for our cameras that we have paid a lot of money and that we still enjoy using

just my 2c

I don't own a DSMC 2 camera but I do sincerely hope RED at least makes a few remaining firmware updates to address remaining issues.
I understand that RED likely has limited resources to support the various generations of DSMC cameras but at least providing maintenance updates would ultimately be a good move.

I always felt that it would be beneficial for the greater RED community if an official RED support program for creating a network of authorized service shops (perhaps like a more intense REDucation for camera repair) was created to help manage the growing issue of legacy out of warranty RED cameras that might need repair.
Support that includes training, schematics, parts list, approval and authorization etc.

RED as a company is always moving forward which is great but older cameras (and users) sometimes get left behind which is not so good.

Perhaps building an authorized 3rd party support community would help remedy this.

Just my 2 cents (and I own two DSMC2 cameras) but when Red decided to abandon "obsolescence obsolete" they have a duty to continue to provide service, updates, and support for this generation of cameras for at least 5 years from the switch to DSMC3. Red cannot claim anymore that there is a good trade up policy. The solution is that the next camera that I purchase will be from a different manufacturer, either it will be less expensive or have better long term support. I am disappointed and many others are as well. My old Nikon cameras still get updates from the manufacturer as needed. Z-9 is looking appealing.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but as a former dsmc2 owner, the last firmware update was October 2020, before that it was December 2019, for a long while before that the dsmc2 updates were just smaller bug fixes, not like their were any major feature additions for quite a while. Based on this I’m pretty confident there probably won’t be another firmware update for dsmc2. As much as there might be a few things that people still wanted added, you have to be realistic, with the last update being more than 2 years ago and red having released 4 new cameras since then, you gat know that they probably have their hands tied from a firmware standpoint. I actually saw they had a job opening for a firmware developer late last year, that alone said to me how much is on their plate. Would be great to see them give one more up date to dsmc2 but being realistic, it probably won’t happen.

That is exsact why i got out of Komod and the idea to invest one cent in DSMC3 lineup. Simply i dont feel safe investing in RED ecosystem one more time. I have a camera that was 85 000 dollars and that is worth bearly 10K today. Even by todays standards Monstro is one of the most advanced cameras on the market but no one whats to rent it or no one wants to buy it. I have ultra reliable camera that world thinks its unreliable. After 4 yers i have chanted the same song to my clients and i had to argue with the people about non existing reliability issue . Now I have 8K, VV, 16 bit Raw, that Hollywood uses on Big Shows but i can use only on personal project. No one in the industry wants to use and people rent it when they have no money for anything "better". On top of that stigma I have to swim up stream and i have to pray for new firmware.... then ask me why i wont buy Raptor XL that i consider a terrific cam and one of the best at the moment.

RED has the problem, and if they dont realize it will loose majority of the loyal customers. That same group of loyal owners were the main guys pushing for RED among local filmakers. I know several people in my community that were hard core "red guys" that jumped ship to Arri and they dont want to do nothing now with Red. This is not halpping us that sill have the REDs at all.

It seams that RED dont care about us: they dont care about giving us Firmware, new media option, fixing bad calls with EVF or more anamorphic potions...It seams that RED dont care about the image that they have in the industry and how auto devaluation rolled this brand to the margin.... It seams that only thing that they care is selling is new stuff, things that we dont actually need.

I hope someone form RED read this tread!

Yes! It was no small effort to invest in the Red ecosystem(Scarlet w first then helium and many moduules) I hope the just don't leave us behind. I really like the dsmc2 ecosystem, very reliable and integrated, contrary to this third party way with v-raptor which seems less professional to me( lens mount and stitch issue, rf lock ring, monitor etc)

Hello RED Team, can anyone address the qualms we have regarding the issues DSMC2 and under have? - Especially with the future of our media storage, this would really restore faith from your early adopters and supporters.

If red did a firmware release for DSMC1 and 2 that just did not have the red media lock and sell empty media shells they would stir the market quite a bit and by doing so get on a whole bunch of new users that likely later also would look at buying a new red camera. Basically use the old model cameras to get people into the red eco system in a grand way while also make it far more difficult for the completion to compete.

DSMC2 used market plummeted and general attitude of the people towards DSMC2 is like they are talking about dead, vintage electronics. RED could totally save our investment and give a bit more life in to it. but THEY DONT CARE!

lets make a a petition!

I will keep my monstro until it dies and I think it will last quite a few more moons. Whats nice is that the prices for accessories for it is just just getting lower and lower. I might pick up a ultra bright screen for it and some more long take mags if / when the prices gets right or I get a project that kind of demands it.

In general there is not a function I feel I miss on it.

But yes, seams dumb, I think, not to let out full potential out of the DSMC1 and 2. Those that jump on the DSMC3 would do so no matter what, but improving the old camera is as I see it a great way to enforce the red brand, some what in the same way as the old upgrade paths. Big difference if buying red means you buy something with great potential that is likely to grow, or buy red and likely you camera will be end of line even before its out of beta versions for auto focus. lol

Bjorn, that was my logic as well and thats why i have got rid of all the RED stuff and keep Monstro only. I will run it to a ground untill there is a last atom of life in it. I am sure that eventually some new Ginitec will pop up on ebay selling hacked drive and that at least i will have a good stash of accesories to run it... but it really sucks

Agree. The plummeting prices on DSMC2 gear is not a bad thing for us who intend to keep and use those cameras.

Bump.

Even if I have to pay for a new firmware, I would gladly!

But please unlock the SSD. Or sell some kind of SSD adapter instead, I'd buy right away!
