  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will we ever get PRORES ?

The REDCAST module is a well designed, capable unit. Last two trucks I specced had them in the mix. Just wish a Weapon/DSMC2 version was in the store ready for purchase...

I am sure it will come, and with improvements.
It's the right move for a new market and pretty much "modular" at its best (even though it doesn't address the "affordable 4k HDMI" issue.
But that is also not the issue it is designed to address,

I'm with you Gunleik, I do expect a DSMC2 version to come our way - just hope it happens sooner than later.

The second issue is the desire of a lot of RedUsers for a UHD over HDMI2 video tap to support UHD monitoring. It sure seems like something RED could include in a deluxe expander...

I know this is a somewhat naive - and stubborn - perspective but, honestly, I think that any producer who can't understand that beautiful images can be wrought from well exposed REDraw (and it is easy enough to see whether it is well exposed while on set), then I think that producer should find another line of work. :-(

Now, carry on with the persistent discussion of the need for ProRes...

:-)

I think any serious producer should go with an ARRI or Film instead of Red. But that's just my perspective. :- )

Good producers work with the DP and Director to get the right tool for the given job, regardless of the name on the case or legacy misinformation.

Well, a good chunk of Hollywood, TV and indie producers are ignoring your advice...
I think a larger share of scripted American network television is being shot on Alexa. But in the grand scheme of things, I don't think it matters what they shoot on as long as it's a proven workflow and the cinematographer knows what he or she is doing. The camera might be among the least important factors, everything else being equal.
