It is unusual to have such a short warranty period on an item with this price tag. This is usually an indicator of build quality, yet from what I've heard of the software, noone is reporting crashes, and seen of the camera, it looks pretty solid, so I wonder why the warranty isn't. Any thoughts?

Six month warranty does not inspire a lot of confidences. And a 30%restocking fee.....I was hoping for years of trouble free use.

Where did you see this 6 month warranty.

As far as I know in Switzerland, 1 year warranty is the minimum legal.

I could swear that the RED site did say there was a 1 year, non-transferable warranty on the camera. But now it says 6 months and new owners can have the camera re-certified for $500 and that gives them a 90-day warranty.

As for laws in Switzerland, I doubt that those would apply. RED is an american product that you would be buying from the USA and importing yourself, so I don't think any such laws would apply. RED would have to set up a Swiss sales office and sell and support them locally or import them and sell / support them through a brokerage. Then such warranties would apply?

In the USA, laws on warranties tend to apply on a per-industry basis. There are various laws to govern automotive factory warranties, for example. Sometimes such laws can vary from one state to another and the law that governs is the law of whatever state in which the vehicle was originally purchased.

I could swear the exact same thing Jeff. I'm sure it said one year not that long ago.

What worries me is the mileage the competition will get using this.

"Well customer, RED may be the hot flavor, but have you looked at the warrenty? Only 6 months.. You have to ask yourself, if the camera is so tough why does it have such a short warrenty!?"

Yikes... This is not my opinion, but if I were a Panasonic dealer selling against RED, I would use this for sure.

Personally, I'm not worried, but I know more about the company than the average joe... Something tells me this will get fixed.. I have faith

But it's been 'fixed' already. I know for sure that it said '1 year' just a few weeks ago.

It's a hard thing to take when you buy something understanding you'll get a 1 year warranty and then only get half that... not good at all.

Yeah 6 month is way to short. There's nothing in my home that has a shorter warranty than one year.

I could also could swear that when I paid my reservation there was a one year warranty.

Any way, the cam even isn't finished and for the first 100 cam owners their warranty is gone around april.
Kinda crazy. I'm sure there still will be some upgrades then, will they still be for free?

Just some thoughts.

This is the first I've heard of this.

In Spain, the warranty of any product is two years by law.

Yes, two years is minimum legal throughout the EU.
Of course that doesn't apply if you buy RED in the USA. However if you import a RED and resell it (as a business) in the EU you will have to provide this warranty.

Sounds like a prelude to a "you may purchase an extended warranty" offer. Hope they will at least warranty the drive train and engine for longer.

This was discussed back in September and the warranty lengths were clearly doubled back then:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=4772

Which means that the first 25 or 50 RED owners are getting the 1 year original/6-month refurbished and everyone else gets half that. Or so it seems.

Well, thats not a nice prelude is it...starts to sound like the Future Shop experience. I'm not into being sold extended warranties...of course, this is speculation on your part number6. However, I'm hard pressed to understand a 6 month warranty under any circumstance. I'm not into 'hoping' they'll warranty the drivetrain and engine. They've already 'lowered' their warranty by half. This is also unusual. Wonder if someone from Red can input on this.

My "dodgy detector" says this is wrong..

Six months is nonsense. I can't think of another product that doesn't do 1 year minimum warranty.

Clause 7 says:

7. CUSTOMER SOURCE INSPECTION – A fee of $500.00 will be charged for any order requiring customer source inspection or receipt of goods, at the Red facility.

No comprendo senor: Does that mean you have to pay $500 to pick the thing up? Por que??:usd:

If it will be new gear, yes. An eventual RED rep, for instance.

ya... to me it sounds like
ok, i will sell the camera to you cheap at the beginning, but i make money out of you from what you pay for other equipment the service.

Okay... I'm a little shocked over this one... so I want to wait until Jim and Red weighs in... because that's what they're all about, right? Get some real answers from the horse's mouth, so to speak. But at the face of it, this really flies in the face of what "Red" is all about; or did I get it all wrong with the "revolutionary" attitude of great, unheard of quality at a price point that gets it into the hands of the many. The great glass, low prices, great customer service, open attitude, etc. etc. But six months? Standard 90 days? I thought there was nothing "standard" about Red. Not only did the camera impress me, but the business/attitude/customer philosophy of Jim impressed me even more. I believed Red was all about quality, but 6 months says the opposite. And if the speculation of milking money with added warranty or high service costs turns out to be true, then maybe this is the start of the other shoe dropping? I think 1 year minimum; more would have been what I have come to expect from Red (even to purchase additional warranty at a Red low cost would have been acceptable). I don't want to believe it. Jim?

I'm not going to panic yet, but I sure hope this will be corrected or addressed in a meaningful way.

I'll just be getting warmed-up in six-months. :)

J.
