  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

why 48fps and not 50fps?

Maybe RED wants to send a message. ;)

The real technical reasons to shoot 25p and 50p are getting smaller and smaller. There are some left, of course, but 24p/48p/60p are worldwide standards and you can easily convert to PAL-formats from that.

Damn i wish they had extended european tv-standards to support 24p and 60p and, more importantly, variable resolution/framerates for tv-channels when they had the chances to do that. Two opportunities are already thrown away.

On the bright side, i'm still thankful for BluRays being mastered in 24p worldwide. They did the right move here.

Yes it might be east to convert from 24p to 25p simply by moving from realtime playback by I frame and stretch audio to fit.... But if you say that's whats needed to shoot in close to dual playback framerate I can assure you than any producer would turn their head and look for another camera... it's not like the options are not out there. And there is other things to stress over in film produciton than 1frame per second audio stretching to make things work. So this 48p stuff is to me the biggest bugger on scarlet. We use scalets all the time and we usually shoot witout sound etc so alot of times it does not matter if we shoot 48p and then speed up 200% and playback things a little faster than realtime... still I think a lot of rental clients in europe does look at it differently.

Not as long as mains frequency and practical lighting is 50Hz based in PAL land.

I don't get how this is a "major flaw" when you can shoot 5K 2:1, 5K 2.4:1, and 4K FF at 50 fps, you just can't shoot 5K FF at 50 fps. It's annoying, yes, but "major flaw" is somewhat of a hyperbole. I will agree, however, that being able to do 50 fps at 5K FF would be helpful.

Believe me, I completely understand the need for 50 fps in a 50 Hz country, I'm just saying that you have options at 5K and 4K at 50 fps -- you implied in your original post (actually fifth) that you had to go to 2K when you wanted 50 fps. You make it sound like the camera can't do 50 fps when it just can't do it at 5K FF. Also, as an "American", don't you think we have it worse being in a 60 Hz country and having fewer 60 fps options on the Scarlet than you have 50 fps options?

They're talking about Scarlet-X not Scarlet-Dragon... So the only option is 2kFF or 3kWS (which both do 60fps, so can be dropped down to 50fps)... 3kHD/FF is (oddly) 48fps max. In all honesty, that's far more frustrating than not having 4.5k at speed...

No problem David:)

i'm not one to moan, that much:) but would love red to jump in and put this to rest, its is so so frustrating.

Hmm…there is a reason for 25/50fps standard in Europe. Its our power supply system not just a old TV standard. We use 50hz not 60.
You can use a 172,8° shutterangle instead of 180 for shooting 24/48fps to get 1/50th shutter to avoid flickering problems with lights & bulbs. But if you wants to send it to a TV station it has to be on a 25/50 base. But most time this is more a problem for the Sound department and our Postproductions :-)

But anyway… in my opinion the 4k hd 50fps is already a great solution (quality & sensorsize) and i think the question is more if it is just a technical limitation or its because red forgot the 50hz regions in their software.
maybe both? ;-)

I find it hard to believe 2 frames is a technical limitation of the camera, I also don't believe we went to the moOn😜

Why not fix this with the dragon upgrade?

48fps is a cinema standard. The Hobbit was shot and projected at that frame rate.
Saying that people living in the U.S. can't relate to the issue is just nonsense.
I am a European who lives and works in the U.S. The broadcast format here is 29.97.
And no the Scarlet D does not shoot 60fps at 5k.

At its price point and capabilities the Scarlet D is an amazing camera. Stop asking for it to be something that it was not designed to be.
You can either have price or performance. ; )

i'm sure the scarlet dragon is an amazing camera and may still decide to purchase it, not sure at the moment.

out of interest what was the scarlet designed to be in your opinion?

it can do 5K 2.4:1 @ 60 FPS

iI'll fill in some of the gaps from the format / frame rate list from the start of the thread...

The following formats / max frame rates are supported on Scarlet Dragon:
5K FF @ 48 FPS
5K 2:1 @ 51 FPS
5K 2.4:1 @ 60 FPS
4K FF @ 60 FPS
