  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If you are talking about the Courier i guess you didn't see the videos. Pen input is for drawing and writing. For other uses you can use your fingers too.

The Courier looks to me like the PERFECT tool for preproduction. I like drawing my own storyboards and it's cool that i can reference them with photos that i can take with it.
 
But you can do that with the iPad, also you can do pen input with the iPad. I saw the videos and sure you can flick etc. but it'll take ages for them to get the app store to where the apple one is...given yeah it's pretty neat but my experience with ms vs apple is probably why i went one way then the other...though I'd definitely love to see it when it comes out don't get me wrong on that...

Though with cinemek already on the storyboard side for iPhone waiting on the version for iPad will be a neat wait. Input images in one program, import into cinemek. PDF and out

I saw the courier but my perfect production device for pre to production to post is one I can use now and put into everyones hands. This is going to be a beast of a device once people start seeing what can be done with that screen estate
 
Someone needs to make a Lemo Lockit/Clockit interface for an iPad so it could run a smart slate app.

When I got the gen 1 iTouch the first thing I thought was how cool it would be if it was 4 times bigger.

Got a few things in the works, a couple cinematography/photography oriented utilities. Nothing unique there, just a few small iPhone apps that I've made because I haven't found many current apps that do things the way I like or have all the features I'm looking for. I have an iPhone timecode calculator awaiting approval right now, for example. I don't want to disclose individual details on apps until they're available. Too many copycats out there.

I'm working on two big iPad apps, but neither are cinema/photog/RED related. One is for a client in the medical industry - it's an enterprise, internal distribution app, so won't see the App Store. The other big app I'm working on is for excavating, road and bridge contractors and it is my own creation. But I've got a few hold-ups on that one. Some of the commonly-used CAD formats within the industry are not that open or have steep licensing costs. The other problem I have is Apple's policy on connecting peripheral devices. Currently we can only code for devices that are Apple Approved and carry the "designed for iPhone/iPod/iPad" labeling. This makes it difficult to plug the iPad directly to a GPS-enabled surveying system as we can with most any notebook or netbook PC.

i'll get an iPad. i agree. at first glance, it's like a big iPod touch. and that is all it really is. but it is a BIG iPod touch. that's the key. so much screen real estate now.

Exactly. It is also several times more powerful than an iPhone or iPod touch, people tend to overlook that. It's a much more powerful platform for media, gaming and complex apps. When I finish up the apps I have in the pipeline, I would like to do an iPad game and I have a good idea for one. I spent a few years of my life as a game developer and haven't done much game design or programming over the past few years, so I guess I have the itch.

As for the other iPad apps I'm currently working on, the medical one is one for a long-standing client that I do lots of obscure jobs for. The construction one comes from my roots I guess you could say. My family has been in the construction biz for several generations, since the end of the first world war. And when it all comes down to it, it's still the one industry I know the most about and have done the most with.

with apps, i think it's easy to see that it is now a million devices in one. these things will be awesome.

For sure. They're really going to fly once we get a bunch of dedicated iPad apps. I think that Apple will open up the platform a bit more as time goes on, and the next generation of the device will be even better. I don't own one yet, all us standard developers have to get ours on the 3rd just like everyone else. But I have had my hands on a prototype unit. For me, I think the three biggest features it is lacking are: 1> Front-facing camera for video chat and facial recognition features. 2> Multi-user abilities 3> general-use USB port for communicating with ANY USB device, without using a special dock to USB adapter and without restriction of only connecting to approved devices.

Even with the current limitations, it is a very capable platform that is very intuitively designed.

As for the MS Courier, it looks very interesting too. But IMO, it's a whole different product, targeting a different market. I'm anxious to get my hands on one of those too.
 
Who really likes their iPads and who thinks they suck?
 
Just got mine Friday. Have to say at first I was really skeptical about how useful it'd be, considering I have a MacBook pro and an iPhone, but I really love this thing. Got the 3G model, though I haven't needed it yet so I haven't activated a plan.
So far, my impressions are-
- Insane battery life
- way easier/ faster to type on (in landscape mode) than you'd expect.
- screen is awesome and looks great
- it's probably the most beautiful gadget I have.

Because of this, I've relegated my MacBook pro to strictly work related things and my iPad has become my surf/email device. When you work from home, it's important to have this distinction between work and play, and this does the job beautifully.
 
Yea, I bought the 3G version and love it! I get so much done with it because of it's small size and convenience. Today I responded to 5 emails while waiting in line at a drive through fast food restaurant. I have also been using it for a cell phone with the new 2.0 Skype that works off 3G cell towers, no wifi needed.

It's the first Apple product that I have ever purchased, it's a good one to have if your always on the go, I have been getting 11+ hours out of mine so far on a single charge.
