  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Who ordered EPIC stage 2? Let's try and count?

Those of you that have received your camera recently or will receive it soon, can you post your Epic X serial?

I'm just curious what number we're up to now (just wondering how many cameras have been "made" thus far).

Won't tell us much... Serial numbers are not being sent out in any recognizable order and they may or may not be skipping ranges of numbers. There were cameras being delivered with serial numbers in the 300's and 400's when I received EPIC-X #105. Same with EPIC-M, I'm #825 and I was shocked to get a number that high. I watched people get EPIC-M #'s from the 200's to 600's *AFTER* I had already had my M for well over a month. I think RED does this by design so it's hard to track progress and put a finger on just how many cameras might be out there.

5360 _ Harcharan S.
5384 _ Ron R.
5390 _ David G.

According to list above David G. with R1 serial number 5390 has got his mail. His R1 was delivered in Dec 2008.
My R1 was PAID and delivered in Jan 2009 with serial number 5360.But I had booked the camera in Oct 2008.
So I think in case of R1 the serial numbers does give you pic of the progress...for EPIC M I am also not sure because
I had EPIC M 967 but some lower serial number EPIC M's were delivered after I got the camera ...maybe they paid late.

Hi Luca,
What is your R1 serial number and date of delivery?
Thanks

Anything's possible, but I think it would be an unusual method for them to arbitrarily "skip" groups of numbers, as far as we know they didn't do that with the R1. Sure there may be a few "duds" that have to be pulled here and there, but who knows maybe you're right.

Pure speculation, but my guess is that the jumping around in numbers has more to do with the customer's speed of payment once notified, possible cancelations, etc. In other words, they allot a serial at some point early on in the process and then if the customer makes a change, delays delivery, etc, that serial number get's shuffled in some way. Maybe you got a number that was originally allotted to someone else and they couldn't come up with the funds.

Again, who knows, but I still think that when we see serial 1000 that means they physically manufactured around 1000 cameras (not exact, but at least closer to 1000 than say random numbers like 400 or 3000), not that all of those have been shipped or even been allotted. Maybe only 600 have been shipped, maybe James Cameron jumped the line and bought another 200. : )

Regardless I just want to say thanks to Antonio for keeping up this thread, the only thing keeping a lot of us in stage 2 & 3 sane these days :emote_happyhappy:

I think RED take down orders as they come through, and assign them a serial number, then, if for some reason someone cancels, takes a long time to pay or just plane gives up, that serial number is not canceled, just passed over, so, for the 9 thousand odd serial numbers there are for sure less real RED cameras in the wild. This is my understanding anyway, and I have a vague idea that someone from RED told me this when I was at their booth at NAB earlier in the year.

And EPIC serial numbers are a direct correlation between your RED serial number, when your original RED was shipped and how many people with RED cameras did go stage 2 and did not go stage 2, between your ship date and theirs... Not sure if my explanation was understandable or not...so, for example RED serial number 4657 became Epic X 793, that means that when 4657 finally shipped, and the amount of RED's prior to it that went stage 2 were 792 epics, but to add cnfusion to the mix, there can be serial numbers above and bellow that have lower epic serial numbers, because there could have been someone that ordered and had their original RED shipped before 4657, and yet only paid his epic after 4657 paid for his.... Complicated isn't it? But this is what I think it is like...

I think we're all on the same page. My original point was just that the serial number of the Epic X is nice to know because it gives us a decent (not exact) indication of the total number of units manufactured. My guess is that its within a hundred or two of the highest current serial number (e.g. - Epic X sn# 1000 means we can probably safely assume that at least 800 cameras have been manufactured).

I just personally don't think they're randomly choosing the serial numbers - even though I agree the serials are not an exact indication, but then again its all just a guessing game until we each receive our camera.

My guess is that before they even started shipping Stage 2 Epics they assigned the X serial numbers in order of R-1 camera numbers of Stage 2 deposit holders. Then, when shipping began, it was done on the basis of shipping dates of the original R-1. That's how I would have done it. And maybe that is what you and Antonio were saying too.

Elsie, your guess won't explain why my Epics were assigned numbers 878 and 959. I reserved, paid, and then received my 2 R-1 cameras #1194 and 1195 as one package, and I reserved, paid, and received my 2 Epics as one package, too. So why that difference in their serial numbers?

Good point. So maybe they are numbering and delivering using the Mayan calendar. If that's not it, I got nuthin.

#550.
