I'm working on a music video. shot lots of clips (not treating it like film), 4k 2:1

if anyone can give workflow suggestions for FCP, with RED Rocket.
I was using clipfinder before to create clips for offline edit, now have RED Rocket availability.

Wondering if I can quickly create small res. proresLT clips for offline edit with REDROCKET, cut in FCP with them and then conform back to original R3D using clipfinder for grading in Color

has anyone done something similar and can provide steps outline? REDROCKET/Clipfinder?

thank u

As long as you do not rename clips or change the folder structure of the original R3Ds Clipfinder will have no problem conforming clips rendered in RocketCineX.
Do a quick test if you want to be absolutely certain that it works.

Cheers,
Hans

I've provided offline clips (the entire clips) using RR/ROCKETcine-X, the clients edited from those offline clips, provided me the XML, then conform using Clipfinder or Monkey Extract. No problems. My strong wish is that ROCKETcine-X supports OLPF.

We've been doing this for weeks now, it works beautifully.

Oh, and by the way Hans, has anyone told you recently how great clipfinder is! I can't wait to see what you've been cooking up with the new program. Thanks again.

Alex,

You can even change the names of the clips with scene numbers and stuff but they will still inherit the original file names, too.

Alex,

Flight Director uses ROCKETcine-X. It prepares the intermediate R3D aliases for the grading using ROCKETcine-X and for rendering, controls ROCKETcine-X for multi-step batch rendering.

I usually keep the ROCKETcine-X window smaller so I can see the Flight Director window that displays the process status.

Kaku, Hans, and others working with Flight Director workflow, I have a question on how you are using the workflow. The step after when all clips are rendered, what do you do with the result files in "RenderResults"? how are you using it? do you render to DPX with the help of flightdirector/rocketcine? any other things?

the process with using F.D. works great. I rendered out prores4444 from my edit sequence, but I'm not sure what to do with these prores files, since there's no way to relink them to the sequence XML, or generate a new XML linking to them.

So I'm curious as to how you're using F.D., whether you render to DPX or something else I'm missing.

thanks!

There is indeed no simple way to relink them in FCP, which sadly cannot relink based on time-code and reel name alone. Other apps can do this. Avid can, as can Color (although the fact that you have to render in Color before sending to FCP probably cancels the time saving of using the Rocket!) Or in FCP your stuck with manual conforming (ok for a 30s commercial) or various work arounds.

In case of music video (which I just finished working), this is what I did.

I let the director edit using proxy, then save XML.

Take the XML in Clipfinder (load with subclips), then engage Flight Director then clip prepare.

Open the prepared RDC aliases in ROCKETcine-X then apply one light. Using REDgamma and REDcolor conjunction with Shadow control, it is great. Also, by preparing the clips using the Flight Director, the edit ins and outs are specified so it is easy to find what part of the clip you should be looking at to do the one light grading.

Now I actually go back to Clipfinder again and load R3D from XML without the subclip, so it ignores the ins/outs.

Prepare the render with Flight Director, then render the entire portion of clips.

This way, the entire clips are going to be rendered and have no problem conforming.

I agree that this is a valid workflow, but it is far from ideal to have to render out all of every take. For longer form projects with long takes (documentary for example) it would not be practical.

Nick, this is for music video. Also I'm rendering only the clips used in the proxy edit. It took only about few hours to do the baselight on every used clips and render out.

One thing for sure, this does not screw up the speed changes.
