Who is the youngest Red owner?

Where does a 18 year old find $40,000?

Seriously; I just turned 25 and I've never made over $6,000 in a year (which was back when I was 18, actually).

Thankfully my $180,000 BA was mostly covered by financial aid (and some loans)...but it will be a long time before I can afford anything above my hv30. I do appreciate the effect red has had on rentals.

got mine when I was 24 im 25

Wait, there is an 18 yo with a Red? No fair. Rich parents? I'm 20 and wondering where I can get enough to put together a Scarlet S35 package.

Well, if the Scarlet would have been released two years ago I would have owned a couple of them at the age of 16.

The RED One doesn't fit my dominant style of shooting so I haven't tried to get one and have instead invested my money in other gear that will compliment my Scarlets' setup (steadicam, post-production gear, etc.).

For the record, that was a lighthearted comment. I personally know 18 year olds who worked their asses off for their cameras. In fact one of them is responsible for pushing me over the edge and purchasing my own R1 after using his.... he may or may not post in this thread. :)

Props to all 18 year olds who own REDs, I'm envious.

before the red came out I started my personal redone fund....worked like a dog...it too me some years to have the +-40K to buy my initial package...I was already 38 by then...and my red was at #6340...really, how does an 18 yo get one??? for sure not from working...if it was from working, then he is very lucky to make that kind of money at that age....

I'm sorry but if there are any 18 yo who are legitimate R1 owners, they did not pay for it themselves. Did they take out a loan or something?

Read this article: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/how-to-afford-anything.htm

Very interesting stuff in there.

Ken's site is well known if you are a photographer.

Well, if you follow the tips in the link I posted, you can pull it off.

18 and a red?at that age i had different interests!
1. drinking
2. skirt hunting
3. more girls and more drinking

hey i did know that this was the only time where you can do that without getting tired ;)

Just to put this in perspective aged 19 in January 1982 I invested £10,000 into film equipment, money that I had saved from working in the business for 3.5 years. Using house price inflation & today's exchange rate gives $135,977, 18 months ago it would have been over $179,000. I think it's very likely that there will be Red owners under 20 who have purchased for cash using their own money. ROI was less than 4 months IIRC.

This young Canadian photographer could probably afford a couple of REDs - no sweat:

I think he's only 19...

God, this pisses me off. As a freshmen in college, I feel that I have done nothing with my life. How are people like this getting work? I know guys in their 30's, probably more talented than this kid who can't get gigs like this. No offense to this kid, he is talented , but his work looks pretty similar to other photographers, lots of HDR, artificial soft box lighting in exterior environments. I'm sure he is a hard worker but if he has been a pro since 17 (and has a nice apartment in New York), then his parents have certainly helped out. He is probably not in college (since his blog shows he travels a lot) and that's fine but he seems awfully connected for someone who has only been out of high school for 2 years and is already shooting for some top publishers. In one if his videos, he is shooting with Hasselblad's, we are talking about stills cameras that cost more than Red. Great for him, I wish I was working with guys like Vincent Laforet at 19. My suggestion to kids who want to go into photography, get a 7D and spend hours in front of photoshop and you can do something similar.

No offense, but I think I'd rather be taking my advice from the dude making connections. Spending hours at home on Photoshop isn't everything...gotta be making those connections to balance it all out (of course, I'm sure you already know that).

None taken. I'm wondering how the hell he is making connections like that at age 19. Based on his site, he has a vast knowledge of photoshop and frankly, that is the tool of choice so yes, learn the software and shoot, shoot, shoot. I did it the wrong way, spending hours in the darkroom with my dad when I should have been learning photoshop. I sure had a lot of fun though. Luck is a huge factor. There is a ton of young talent that will never get a gig like this. BTW, I'm not a the best person for advice, just my opinion.

Got my red at 24 and was driving a 98 honda accord. When I was mailing my cashiers check my stomach was churning...

At 18 I was director of my own company that was formed "in abstentia" for me when I was 16 and at 18 I had well more than enough to buy a few red's. I wasnt in that business at the time (I was in IT) but its very very possible if you have talent and determination to do so. I later sold said business for a fair amount of money and went into my current position with a good cushion of money.
And no I'm not a trust fund baby, I grew up in a council Estate and started my investments with 100 pounds that I bought and sold stuff with up to starting my first company.
