  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Who has received their REDRAY?

Phil,

What monitor/TV are you viewing your REDRAY footage on?

I've had it hooked up to a few. I know which ones I like if that's what you're asking. Pretty fond of the Sony and Samsung offerings. Really thought I'd hate that 55" Sony with it's crazy speakers on the sides, but gotta say, it sounds pretty good and the image quality is very nice. A few of these are pretty large mirrors, so light the rooms appropriately.

Actually, that makes me wonder if I've seen a decent anti-reflective 4K display yet..... Better call Dell and make sure that's part of the cake batter.

In terms of what actually ends up staying in my house for more than a week, the verdict is still out because there's panels on the horizon that I'm somewhat anticipating.

I'll likely have a 38-46" incher in my office and a 55"-80" incher in the living room when it's all said and done. Eventually the main monitor on my color suite will likely be a 4K display of some sort.

Any news on when the players might be shipping? We ordered 3 to feed 84" Sony 4K displays for a hotel lobby installation and haven't heard anything. I have my 4K Red footage ready to encode but no player yet!

Can it be they choose to change it still to hdm2? Seams it should be shipping alot more by now.

That isnt actually equivical about the change being impossible by firmware alone.

Because of the new enhanced feature set, any such conversion would require hardware and/or firmware upgrades.
Suggests that depending on the hardware already in there that firmware may be sufficent otherwise the use of OR is not really valid.

If there are such conversions, it would come from the manufacturer. Please check with them directly.
Again this suggests that the only people able to actually answer the question are RED.

The new enhanced feature set requirements are all things that may well be done in software, as crucially the conecters are the same. This suggests that if RED put in boards fast enough to handle the extra it may well be possible to do by firmware, likely through the current 1.4 spec port.

It may not be possible but this link leaves the gap that if RED put in hardware capable of it, then a firmware upgrade may be the only thing required and there are a number of things that could be waiting on, not least certification. It does also leave open the possibility that some sort of hardware change would be nessersery.

A question to those that have Redray in hand, has anybody tried to upscale 2k content to 4k and if so what are your opinions?

Nobody else receive their Red Ray yet? I called my Bomb Squad rep and they didn't know of any reason for delays or have a concrete shipping time. I ordered three players for a 4K digital signage install with 84" Sony XBR's.

Red does not deliver and does not tell why. My rep can't give me a date. The device is now a year late. The Web shop says as always: Orders placed today expected to ship within 2-3 weeks. I ordered last December.
Seriously, Red, you can do better than this.

There is definitely something up with REDRAY and I don't think RED is ready to say what's going on just yet. They seem to be holding them for a good reason and it doesn't seem like a production issue. Look at it from the opposite side of the fence here… I was one of the very first people to receive a REDRAY. I had no idea it was going to show up, just the FedEx man showed up with it, I jumped on here and found myself being the first one to report them shipping.

Since then, all I can do with it is play back my own stuff or one or two things given to me by others who can encode to .RED format (other REDRAY owners). ODEMAX service is not available yet, still in private beta AFAIK… So as of this moment, I've spend $1500 on a fancy player with no content. Ask yourself, are you sure you need to have it right now?

To be perfectly blunt here, the broad appeal of REDRAY to consumers, even "prosumers" is minimal. All the strengths of the .RED format and abilities of the player over the soon to be released H.265 UHD players is meaningless when there's no way to capitalize on these abilities with any of the current or forthcoming 4K displays. Even with HDMI 2.0, there's no way to view greater than 8bit overly compressed color. None of the 4K displays out there in consumer land (or pro land for that matter) take quad HDMI inputs to circumvent current HDMI limitations. There are pro 4K monitors, that start at ridiculous prices like $40K USD, which offer quad HD-SDI input, but the REDRAY doesn't have that. For those, we're better off with an AJA card...

RED's laser projector, if it still exists, can't get here fast enough. And I truly hope they're working on 4K+ monitors as well because the rest of the industry is stuck in some sort of micro-incremental upgrade philosophy while the HDMI consortium totally screwed the pooch.

I'm not trying to rip on RED here, I think they have the situation under control. They probably just can't be very transparent about what they're doing. I'm sure in the end, we'll all benefit.

Well, well. Red Ray delivery is definitely a lottery. After probably 10 calls to my squad rep., he got tired of me, and send me the RED RAY I have been waiting for 3 months. It is indeed good to see some decent 4K material, but it would even be better to play the stuff we produce... they seem to forget to send any information about the Rrencode plugin, and the plug in itself. I hope it will be an easier crusade...

In the meantime, we have been doing some alternative research, and, for almost the same price, there are some fully geared PC (with decent GPU and CPU) which can play 4K.... and which could be used for other purposes, such as rendering ! HDMI 2.0, HEVC and Blu Ray 4K will be confirmed next year, so that RED RAY has to bring soon an added value to make a difference. This might explain the silence and random delivery.

Indeed, RED communication tends to be as opaque as the news in Russia. Who knows why you can't order a Rrencode online anymore ? and where are the 512 Go cards ? No wonder they choose the main color of the Russian flag as a brand ! However, they keep me thrilled: it's like being part of a Champion League team, with their ups and downs, but always under the spot light !

However, if some of you had a chance to look at the pre-loaded films in the RED RAY, look again at the Brain Farm and R800 clips. Around fast moving objects (snowboards, skate, bikes), there is a lot of flickering on the contours over the back-ground, just as if the encoding algorythm can not keep up with the vast amount of information flowing. Even if we all know that Jpeg2000 is hiding under R3D and RED cryptography, there is room for improvement here. Indeed, you will not see this on Phil Holland's 6K lizard lady face... who is as steady as charming... but let's challenge the codec, and indeed, send them some feedback.

... I'm sure in the end, we'll all benefit.

I subscribe to this same theory. I don't even WANT a REDRAY until RED is satisfied it is time to distribute them. I like a company that is so attuned to the wants and needs of its customer base that they won't ship a current or soon to be obsolete product. They should have named the company Avante because they always seem to be visualizing what's over the next hill rather than just seeing a hill.

Stepped delivery. Rather than delays they might need to figure out a system of official stepped delivery, where at each stage they deliver something useful, so people know where things are at Tester units that don't require Odemax as a beta, with soft upgrades to hdmi2 to use for shop player/digital signage market. It could be they are waiting for content arrangements.

Received yesterday.

Just registration issues so far but the rest is awesome :)

Interested to see your review Eric. I have a notice but am on the fence. If it's EOL then it's not hugely appealing.

Planning on testing it on a 4K display soon.

I will get back to asap on our findings.

Next step is to play with REDCODE.
