  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

which wireless follow focus to buy?

the u-lex is quite expensive at 13500 dollars without any servos, which makes it even more expensive than the arri wcu 3 + receiver or the cmotion basic kit. I personally never heard of any owners/users/rentals so far of the u-lex.

I second the Jag35 product.. it's soooooo bad that I had them ship me the non digital version saying it's less noisy.. but it still is!! how can there be noise when at rest you know?? I returned it immediately and they refunded me..

Preston is very good. Its what I have. C-Motion is very nice as well. If your in London call Patric at Favarental.co.uk for a little demo and a cuppa coffee. The new digital bartech is sweet as well; I have one of them too.. as well as an analogue bartech which I think is still the best for stills lenses as you set your end stops manually.

I just got my RT Motion FF Kit. First impression is great, the build quality of this thing is amazing, set up a breeze. I will be testing the unit and post back here, but know this much: I think you'll have to look hard to find a product as good as this one at this price point. Really happy so far. Some really cool features, and some great ones still to come. All user updatable...

Had one for a while, but not fully explored yet - Kris is a delight to deal with and the product does what it says at a very reasonable price.

RTMotion costs ~$3500 for a kit with one motor, with several power and start stop cables, all the different gear options and rod clamps. It's possible to get a bare bones kit for much less or more motors for more.

The Hocus Focus is not intended to turn cine lenses, as they've said a few times. Plus it doesn't seem to have nearly as many features and options.

I've got the Chrosziel Aladin II and love it. Saved and waited and waited for the Redrock WFF and gave up... SO glad I did... what a joke that thing is. Yes, huge difference in price but the Chrosziel is proven, actually shipping, and very intuitive. It will also run up to 8 channels for 3D (No desire to do this now, but some day... maybe)

Total cost of my Chrosziel Aladin II w/ focus/iris moduel, receiver, Betz motor, and 2 batteries was about $16,000. Will be adding another motor soon for iris control.

Schneider Optics was great to work with on my purchase.

This came up in another thread today, but I'll reiterate it here... the best wireless FF system. IMHO, is the one that talks directly to the EPIC/Scarlet brain and gives you proper FF control of your EOS lenses.

Which means 'the best' doesn't exist yet, AFAIK.

REDmote PRO would do it, but it doesn't exist yet.

Hopefully some 3rd party specialist - ViewFactor? Redrock? - will step in and fill the gap ASAP. I personally feel that a dedicated 3rd party wireless FF controller + a REDmote would be a better and more flexible solution than a single unit REDmote PRO, in many situations. Redrock are maybe the best bet as their system is based around an iPod/iPhone app - and we already know an iPhone app can control an EPIC, we've seen a RED prototype app do exactly that!

OTOH, the Redrock system has been shipping 'real soon' for like 18 months...

[EDIT] add image of the Redrock...

I got the RTMotion yesterday. First impressions: Not perfect, but for the price: Wow.

Full review coming soon.

In the meantime, email me if you want to rent it ;)

Excellent Andy. Hope to get one ordered next week. Did you get the thin line drives? I am shooting for a two or three channel. Did you order direct?

Cheers

I got the newest version of everything, so new receiver and thin motors. I ordered strait through them back in November.
