  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Which upgrade? Dragon or Epic?

I think it might come down to whether you're willing to spend $9500 or $19000 on the upgrade. If you can only budget for $9500, then I think the Scarlet Dragon will be the better camera - besides higher frame rates, I don't see any area (on paper) in which the Epic MX would produce a better image than a Scarlet Dragon, and for many 75fps at 4K or 100fps at 3K will be plenty. If you have $19,000 then for sure Epic and then Epic Dragon will be the way to go.

It is all well and good the advice to upgrade to Epic and then Epic Dragon - but $20,0000 isn't in everybody's grasp, or maybe they just don't want to spend that much, and in that instance I think a Scarlet Dragon will be an amazing compromise, and will most likely produce a far superior image to an MX Epic. That being said - what's the rush? Images from Dragon will need to be released sooner of later.

Exactly. If you have the money, go for Epic Dragon. If not, Scarlet Dragon is very much the camera I was looking for. High fps is not for everyone and scarlet already does quite some of it useable.

I think a lot of people are forgetting cropping/field of view. Yes, for a lot of people 3K 100fps with a Scarlet Dragon will be plenty, but remember that will influence the lens and angle of your shot, whereas with an Epic you really just worry about shooting (5k @120fps).

To some this might not be a big deal; they just put a wider lens, re-adjust camera position, etc. To others, this is HUGE.

What is pushing me towards the Epic, other than the above, is the 1-year warranty, whereas the Scarlet Dragon carries a sensor only warranty of 90 days. For 10K, that warranty should be longer, imho.

The crop factor is about the only thing I don't like too much about my scarlet. Not having useable 5K for motion is the only thing I always wish I had ( in terms of crop mostly and in terms of DSMC motion and stills second ) we will just have to wait and see how the scarlet dragon is affected. I for one just hope I can upgrade at all...

I'm beginning to lean toward going with the Epic MX, and then Epic Dragon, because I just can't shake off the framerates! I mean, 1/6 speed at 4K??? That's crazy! Not Phantom Flex crazy, but still.... I LOVE slow motion. Always have, probably always will. Sure 1/3 with Scarlet Dragon at 4K is okay, but you don't get the same effect. So I think I'll shoot for Scarlet first, just to get my feet wet with RED workflow, and shooting, this and that, then go Epic MX when I have the money, and then Epic Dragon... by that time they should have all willies out of Dragon and it should be usable...
