  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Which Scarlet will you order on Nov.3 2011?

I shot with an EX3 yesterday after shooting with F3's, FS100's, and 7d/5d's and I'm not sure I want a camera with a fixed lens. I'd likely still pick it up if it's the only option, but I'm thinking of going another direction now. Not having lens options, after only HAVING lens options kind of drove me nuts.

Whether they release the fixed Scarlet or not, I too hope they are releasing an interchangeable version on NOV. 3. Don't care if it's 2/3", S16mm, 4/3, or S35. 3k or 4k. I'm fine with any of them and just hope it is within reach for me financially by the end of the year.

same here except I would like it in my hands by year end.

why would they cannibalize their Epic X market with a lower price S35 Scarlet? That doesn't really make sense? The "X" isn't even readily available. Unless Canon's Mark III on the 3rd is 4K, Red has no real competition. Why compete with the X with a Scarlet S35? I understand the logic of the scarlet. In many ways it is like Resolve giving away a free limited version. Get a customer user base accustomed to using your products, and offer an upgrade path.

Now it gets interesting. With one product there is no consideration to other model price points or product cannibalization. As the Red line fills out the challenges and opportunities begin. My bet is that there will be no OMG price point on the Scarlet. Jim has never sold anything on price. The problemo is that the GH3 and the rest of the high production mob is just around the corner. There will continue to be a convergence of high technology with rapidly lowering cost. As we go into 2012 the playing field will become clear. For now anything is possible since we haven't started the race yet. All guesses now . . . just guesses

Very true!!!!

They already announced that years ago, that's why. I think they should have kept the HDRx out of the S35 Scarlet to further distance it from the Epics and still have it be S35 format at a very interesting price point ($7000).

I agree.

Either way there is going to be value, build or something different between the Scarlet/Epic lines that creates a distinction in price difference/value.

The more and more I think about it I'm kind of hoping to pick one up w/o fixed lens, 2/3 or s35 it doesn't really make a difference to me. I like the certain value of some of the lenses on RED's battle tested glass. I somewhat hope for the 2/3 format still for how cool the mini primes were, that would allow me to pick up either a PL/Canon mount to get some shots I need to reach out at. The BT 300 prime is awesome in it's price range.

My dream setup...
Scarlet removable (2/3 or s35) although I personally like the 2/3 for my medium, but love the s35 shallow DOF
5" touchscreen
Sidehandle
4-8 RedVolts
2 x 128 GB SSD
2 x 64 GB SSD
Lenses:

Mini Primes

  • 6mm T1.5
  • 16mm T1.5
  • 25mm T1.5
  • 50mm T2.9
PL Mount:

RED 300mm BT T2.9
RED 17-50mm T2.9

Canon Mount:

Canon 50 mm F1.4
Tokina 11-16 F2.8
Canon 70-200 F2.8

But I'm not that rich haha. I'd probably start with either the PL or Canon mounts for the longer lenses.

Hey wasn't this the main idea of the thread?

I'm pretty sure the Nov 3rd announcement will not be for a S35 camera.. they haven't even started shipping Epic X's to people who don't already own RED 1's.. So if it's a 2/3 camera I'd go for fixed myself. Surely for most people the big advantage in being able to swap lenses comes where you are able to take advantage of Canon/Nikon 35mm glass, some of which you might already own?

Fixed is less interesting perhaps but it's much more practical.

Benefits from having a fixed lens setup.
Scarlet will then "know" the lens and also control the lens. This is the way of the future. If the camera knows the lens, in other words, has specs for it's errors oddities like breathing chromatic aboration, non rectilinearly etc. All that can be written into the shot frames. Having that data in the post process (read when open in RED Cine or such) the picture can easily be corrected to a level that beats even some of the most expansive glass out there. So having a "computer process" instead having it all happening in the lens is the way to go. It opens up for making super high speed, super light weight no cost lenses.
Today there are no perfect lens, they are all compromises, throwing computing at the problem will eliminate some of the obstacles using one fixed glass solution makes the programing even easier. then offcourse it helps things as touchscreen focus, bracket f stop shots etc aswell. Not to mention shooting Stereo and having one brain controling f stop ,zoom and focus on both lenses with internal motors will make 3D rigs into... 3D cameras. So as I see it making the Scaret into a lower priced epic is not really the way to go. Much cooler if they make it a "one known solution" small and compact with good picture qualities. If the lens is super fast, leaving the processing to data it could be as f 1.1 or so then a smaller sensor is not the end of the world. For our part it would be the thing to put on our driodXL.

If they do an S35 Scarlet I would expect them to do one based on the R1/APSc sized sensor at 4k, not the Epic 5k sensor.

If they come out with a 4k Scarlet that does 120fps, S35, hdrx etc.. why would any one still buy a R1 and they are ahead of most cameras on the market. i just feel that it prlolly will be a 3 k sensor because R1 does 3K know so we know its there . I am sure by this point they prolly want to phase out the R1 due to the size weight and older technology. but i don't think the scarlet will be the replacement for it just my .2cent

Whatever Scarlet ends up being, there will be a version that replaces the Red One. While it's still a great camera, it doesn't quite fit with RED's lineup and future plans. Mark my words we will see an S35 4k+ interchangeable lens RED camera for under $20k. Might as well call it the RED TWO.

i hope your right but wouldn't. that be a huge price gap between the scarlet and the epic. i shoot alot of red now and the 3k isn't. that bad in comparison to 1080p but 4.5 k or 4k does look better. i dont think i has ever seen as much red one camera for sale on ebay as i have now day and canon mark 5dmk2. i just hope its in my range as most other hope as well. does any know if its just a pre order type of thing where is a deposit or full out

I'm kinda curious as to who wants what and just a general head count of FUTURE SCARLET USERS!

Nov. 3 is near which Camera will you buy if these happen to be our options?

1.Scarlet 2/3 Fixed/Interchangeable* Complete Kit
2.Scarlet 2/3 Fixed/Interchangeable* Body
3.Scarlet S35 Complete Kit (Epic-S Surprise)
4.Scarlet S35 Body (Epic-S Surprise)

*If you could choose Fixed or Interchangeable pick one!

We have very little details as to what we are getting but this is a rough start.

If everything goes according to general understanding ( or better ) for the configurations and pricing i will be getting :

- Two fix 2/3 Scarlets as kits.
- One Interchangeable brain and the basic modules enough to make it go.
- A set of mini primes if they all become available at the same time.
- One set of MatteBoxes for all of the above.
- One RED logoed cap if they come with extended warranty.
