Most of my work is in TV land SD or HD . Existing Scarlet over delivers already for broadcast specs.
( In Aus. we are still in SD 16 x 9 land & will be for along time to come) .

"Off speed" Frame rates have there place but if I really need it I will hire it in .........maybe like new Viper.

So given the above, the upgrade that makes the most sense for me is "Scarlet Dragon".

I'm leaning toward option B, Dragon Scarlet. But it will depend on the Scarlet specs for me. If it gets 6k at 24fps then I'm in for sure. If not I might pony up for epic Dragon if I can swing it without my wife shooting me. Lol

I personally don't care about 6K - if Scarlet Dragon offers 4K 120 fps then it's my choice if not I think i'm going Epic X - need high-fps for special effects.

More than likely the Scarlet Dragon.. although the super high frame-rate of Epic is certainly appealing as is the later full Dragon-path, I don't personally ever see myself needing it. 60FPS at 5k and probably 120FPS at 4k would be more than enough for me along with the amazing 20 stops of DR!

I just asked Jarred, there will be a crop on Scarlet Dragon.

I think we all knew it was coming! It's a 6k sensor. Hopefully it's no more than 1.3. And if we're lucky, maybe we'll have 24/25 at 6k. I don't think that is likely, but who knows.

1.3x crop confirmed at 5k and from the sounds of it no 6k at all.

Most definitely going for the scarlet Dragon, if there is no 6k Thats a real bummer since its supposed to be a 6k sensor, but it won't take long to find out about 6k on it when the full spec sheet is out, I'm always happy to take 5k even if its at 60fps! Regardless Can't wait to see full spec sheet on scarlet dragon!

i want 5K 120 fps, so Epic X, no second thoughts,
dont care about 6K for another year at least,
+3 stops would be nice, but i need to see side by side.

If I was upgrading I would go for an Epic but I can't afford the 10K at the moment. Interesting developments none-the-less and i'm glad to see this type of thing continue from RED but just not in my budget.

im finding it suprisingly hard to get excited about 3 stops DR and 6k.. im sure it will be smooth as silk and sharp as hell scaled to 4k, and more res for fx and stablizing is always good , but im so content with what im getting from scarlet as is, it seems superfluous to requirements for me atm.
I definitely suffer from gear lust at times, but Im more tempted to use those funds for the Motion Mount, Movi and Kesslers gear etc at the mo.

i can just see the rental house/ DP/ Producer confusions piling up! RED shaking it up again.

Depends; more interested in Scarlet Dragon for sure... But at the price I may not upgrade at all and opt for 4k/raw b and c cameras from another manufacturer...

Also, if a completely new Scarlet-Dragon brain is only $12-15k, it'd be more worthwhile to put in the additional couple grand and have two shootable camera packages. $9.5k is a really bad place to be for an "upgrade"; I know no other manufacturers do it (give you trade-ins), but when it's essentially the same cost as another brain, it's very difficult to say which way I'd go without a.) seeing .r3ds/specs/comparisons and b.) knowing for sure what the turnaround times will be (After Epic-M users? Epic-X? Will that be june or closer to fall? Will my camera be back in my hands in 5 business days or three weeks? etc.). At the end of the day, no client of mine is going to pay me more for 1k extra resolution and/or 3 more stops of DR, so I may as well hold on to my pennies or get something super-cheap to supplement my shooting package (aka have the B and C cameras and come into a production with three 4k cameras, which is much more sellable to a client than the actual sensor specs).

Am I the only one that feels this way? I'm cautiously optimistic and happy to have options.

I think Jarred said that Scarlet upgrades will begin July.

This is exactly how i feel for sure.

You know what, that's actually probably for the best, as the dust will have settled by then (we'll likely have dragon footage to play with, we'll know if BM can actually deliver a camera on time, and the knee-jerk/impulse-buy NAB excitement will subside).

One thing is for sure, I am definitely super happy that I don't have to spend $18k ($9.5 + 9.5k) to get to Dragon... If that were the case, it would have been a blow out for me. So, yeah, Scarlet-Dragon seems like the best option, I just don't know yet if it's worth it when an entirely new brain may cost pretty much the same (within a few grand) OR I can get multiple camera packages similar to my current setup, but for far less money.

I feel the value in this upgrade to Dragon dos not lie in the resolution. In my opinion, Scarlet Dragon with 60fps 5k, extra DR and 2000 ASA does bring the Scarlet to the top of the game, especially considering the price point compared to others in the market. The great thing is, for those who don't need it, just don't upgrade.

I know I won't be upgrading til early next year, as I'll be shooting a feature on 2 Scarlet-MX's in January.

Well first off this is awesome problem to have ... Red is just amazing. I have three cameras, and it would be so nice to get them all to the same base of an epic dragon. As an unstated "tweak", upgrading one of my Scarlets to an epic dragon monochrome would beyond coolness(specially since I can't update my monochrome epic while its being used for principle photography, which will finish in early 2014).

I maybe speaking newb here but seeing 4K today at the RED theatre sways me to an EPIC upgrade.
I love my Scarlet but that EPIC frame rate is the sweet spot in my mind ;)

If I can upgrade to epic-x and immediately to Epic Dragon, that would be my option.
Trade in my Scarlet, pay 19k and get an Epic Dragon.
