I'm looking to buy a couple c-stands w/ accs. Do you guys have any suggestion as where to find them on a tight budget, possibly second hand?

THANKS! :)

Second hand are hard to find. Try Pyramid Films http://www.pyramid-films.com/

The ones from Dynatran (Chinese copies of Avenger stands), are ok, they are not up to US standards. I personally hate Norms, American aren't bad. The real winners are Mathews.

I bought 6 chinese stands (can't remember the maker) that we refer to as D-stands because they are so heavy, and tall, and just BIG. They are actually pretty good for outside use.

If you intend to use the hell out of them, go with mathews, if you can find them used it's worth it for the price.

cool lights has c-stands too. I've also bought from pyramid. The stuff is usually pretty rough, but it's still perfectly functional.

Just to be clear, there is nothing wrong with Norms c-stands, they just make me grumpy if I have to operate them ;-)

i was seriously considering buying from coollights which is what inspired this thread. Has anyone bought them? any comments?

American grip is the best. Call them direct.

DITTO!

Buy new, (or close to) ask any grip they are worth the extra $!!!!!!! I haven't checked lately, but it used to be a used Cstand was $99 and a new one was $150 ish. Nothing is more frustrating than an old Cstand that wont hold or that you have to fight with!

American Grip Equipment is the best! the new Mathewes stuff is also top notch.

B&H is the cheapest for Matthews. I'm in Portland, Oregon and I can order even just one Matthews stand kit (stand, arm and two grip heads) INCLUDING shipping for $50 less than the local places will sell me the exact same kit.

Does no one rent? I've just found it to be a big pain owning grip equipment.

i live in Monterey. Closest place to rent is over an hour away. Plus, I'm a hobbyist far more often than I'm a professional, so rental or purchase, I'm paying for it. If I can get a good deal on something (say, an unbelievable price on a 4k camera :) ) I'd much rather buy it and have access to it whenever and however often I like.

If I lived in LA or maybe SF, I'd be working more and also have easier access to rental facilities.

American grip all the way. There is no other C-stand. :)

Oh come now, the LA grip club hasnt completely taken you over have they? :-) Matthews deserves some love too, better bang for the buck if you arent going to pound on them every single day.

Maybe? but I would buy a quality Cstand! Go American or Mathewes! You won't regret it.

these are almost half the price of name brands, so im seriously thinking of getting one just to try out.

Where's the cheapest place to buy american grip or mathews?

I was thinking of going Matthews. I heard good things about their grip and that there's no fussing with it, set it and leave it. I'm looking around too so I'll let you know what I find. Are you going to get the arm extensions? I was considering the type that the base comes off so it's more easier to transport.
