  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

where do do guys buy c-stands?

I was thinking of going Matthews. I heard good things about their grip and that there's no fussing with it, set it and leave it. I'm looking around too so I'll let you know what I find. Are you going to get the arm extensions? I was considering the type that the base comes off so it's more easier to transport.

I'm definitely getting arms for each (only looking to get 2 stands). I was under the impression that the legs cam off with all the stands. they do with that ebay one i posted.

which length? i figured the 40 rather then the 20.

i don't know if they all come off. some of them seemed like it didn't and the prices seemed to reflect this, but i'm not sure. i'm planning to head down to some local showrooms and get a more thorough review.

i'm about to pick up some lights too and i can't figure out if i should take the price on this years taxes or next year.

if looking at the mathews Shawn posted, go for the 40". The 20" extends to a puny 33" while the 40" tops out at 10.5'.

if you go to the show rooms tell me what you learn. I'm probably going to hold off until after the 25th to buy.

Oh come now, the LA grip club hasnt completely taken you over have they? :-) Matthews deserves some love too, better bang for the buck if you arent going to pound on them every single day.

What good is a c-stand you can't pound on every single day?

I own a whole bunch of Avenger C stands and I'm very happy with them. No problems at all.

Brandon, don't forget to buy sandbags as well!

Whatever you get, make sure you get turtle base c-stands, they have a bunch more uses.

I haven't been able to figure out what turtle bases are. They're more expensive though

Turtle base means that the riser comes out of the base, leaving you with a really low stand to mount stuff on.

Matthews or American, they are the only ones I know about and they are both plenty rock-solid enough... they have many variations... legs come off, or not, low legs so they can fit under furniture for tighter sets, normal height legs, black (do NOT buy painted grip gear), short and tall... defenitely buy 40" if you need to fly something lower you can do so with the long arm... get baby pins for sure so you can turn the end of the arm into a support for a light if you needed it.

If you are planning on using foam cores you will have to spend a little pile of additional cash for two platypus... there is nothing more annoying than using a foam core without platypus.

That is true... they make some cool stuff that is very lightweight and gets the job done. I've just had one too many of their gobo heads slip on me... and I've broken the knuckle off of two of their heads with my bare hands trying to get it to stop.

Conversely, I only know one guy who's broken the knuckle off of an American stand with his bare hands. It hangs off of the back of his grip truck like bumper nuts. :)

If the price difference isn't unbearable, American Grip co. is the way to go.

Those are the Chinese Avenger copies. They are worth it if you don't pay more than $40 for them - don't pay more than $40 for them.

Cheers,

Nick

I've searched for a few days and can't find these stands anywhere cheaper than that ebay listing. Where did you get the $40 figure? Plus these have "turtle bases".

They may have been dumping them at below cost when they first came out. Search Dynatran c stand.

At more than $80 bucks I'd just pony up and spend the money on better stands, worth it more in the long run. I have I think 4 of the dynatrans, they have worked for several years, and been worked pretty hard, but they are still hanging in there.

cheers,

Nick

thanks for the tip, nick. I can't seem to find anyone selling dynatran c stands anywhere. Anyone know of someone who sells them?
