  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When will we know if Scarlet is upgradeable to Dragon ?

1st, what we know. Epic needs asics upgrades to host a Dragon, too...

Not sure this is really "known." What makes you believe this?

I conjecture this may not be the case. Admittedly, the only "evidence" (circumstantial as it may be) is that the promised frame rates will be lower at 6K - indicating a step down from current 5K capability, and that the upgrade is so affordable at $6K - matching the sensor upgrade price that was M to MX - which AFAIK, was sensor only.

Because Jarred said so...

Guess I can dig out the post, but he did.

The MX upgrade was 4,5k$, if memory serves me...

But I think that with new asics, the dragon upgrade will be an even better choice...

Sure...

and everything is allways subject to change, but...

as the upgrade path to new tech is so seemingly affordable, I am quite sure that is due to something new and smart is also offered.

one question to all you scarleteers...

how often do you really feel you miss out by "just" having 4k @ 24 @s35

used to be my dreMcam. And 'cept from when shooting stills, that pretty much does it for most of my needs...

Yeah - I honestly don't feel I am missing much. Sure, I like over-cranked footage. And an image that would resolve to a "true" measured 4K would be great. But, I am not hugely motivated to upgrade anything right now. I love my Scarlet! For stills, I still use my 60D a lot. As your signature says... "Life is good."

Yup...

Epic @3:1 for stills has really caught my attention...
My TV set is still a non-full-rez panasonic plasma, that reveals to me that a well mastered DVD looks better than a crappy mastered BlueRay...

But sound is still at least half of the cinematic experience. surround really did the trick to me.

I am a no-budget-guy happening to work on big budget productions. And am pretty much used to work with what I have and appreachiate it. To me, the ability to work at all, is the biggest of freedoms...

I am not seriously considering swapping the Epic for a scarlet, though. But that is just an affectionate and relational statement. And a bit due tothe huge differnces I have observed between individual Epics. (I have yet to fire up a scarlet...)

I kind'a like "mine".
We're friendly.

I know the same feeling from when I was a musician...

It is not so much about technical "needs", as it is the friendlyness my cam and I have developed.

I even avoid blackshades and firmwareupgrades these days.

Not sure I really want "a new cam all over"

Hahahaha

That's me

Gunleik the conservative!

I don't feel like I'm missing anything at all. Scarlet is everything I dreamed it would be.

OTOH, having access to higher frame rates would be more useful to me than I originally expected.

I relate to this. B.B. King has his Lucille, I have my Scarlet. Now if only my music were as compelling...

I have not tested a scarlet image in post yet...
But if it is anything like the difference between r1mx and Epic...
You guys should just sit down, relax and enjoy!

I have onlined a few hours of R1m, 41mx and epic footy.
Never
Like
Never once...

Have I confused a r1mx image with an Epic.

Independently of rez and noise.

And never once
Have I wished I had a R1mx over the epic.

RED wil release a supercharged "top of the line" Dragon with 4k monitoring, internal offline recording, dual lcd/evf contacts, iPad remote-app ready with repositioned contacts and possibly xlr's and on-body menusystem à la Alexa/sony and up to 240 fps 6k for around or above 55k $. They will offer a 1:2 compression option on this beast.

Sensor will be 4:3 to take advantage of anamorph glass and be more versatile for stills.
It will have a true end-to-end 16 bit workflow.

This should be happening.

The only real drawback I see to the whole modular/upgrade approach is the confusion that will come when there are various sensors, boards etc housed in just two cameras (Scarlet/Epic).

Imagine in Gunleik's scenario.... Having a Scarlet body that has been upgraded to Epic-MX capabilities, but not Dragon. Things would get very confusing for producers and the RED brand would suffer.

Red was good at branding the MX upgraded R1...

I've dealt with people who were confused by that!

Throw in Scarlet-MX, Scarlet-Dragon, Scarlet-Epic, Epic-M, Epic-MX, Epic-Dragon, Epic-Super-Dragon.... then if they start adding sensor sizes, as planned.... a minefield.

I hear you Ray, but there is actually a rental/Alexa market there in addition to the owner/operator market, and in my opinion RED hasn't really taken a shot at that market, yet...
Image quality is there.
If they built the functionality I describe + a good lightweight and ergonomic cam which even could be mounted on a tripod without some extra "module", I think there is actually a market for that.

But those are just my wild speculations.

Will Im glad you got my point on that!!!:yesnod:
