  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I've got a couple commercials coming up and wanted to check what build people are using for very important material. Is 17 still the release build?

thanks : )

Which build?

Which build?

At the time of writing Build 17 is still the latest official release, but I'd recommend using Build 20 Version 20.1.2.

I'd also recommend Build 20.1.2. It appears to be one of our most stable builds and the image is incredible. Added features make this truly a breakaway firmware upgrade. Unless we hear some surprise issues from customers, we are likely to turn this build into a release build fairly quickly. If you are using Build 20.1.2 and have any feedback, please let us know asap.

I have a 5 camera shoot this week and would also like to know this.

Can I ask if the image improvement is in the way the camera captures or just the way it monitors? In other words, when we get to post production will we see the difference in camera builds?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I have recently upgraded from build 17 to the latest 20 beta build. But I can't get magnifying mode to work while recording in 2k 16:9 time base 25fps, varispeed 100fps. With build 17 this used to work smoothly. Otherwise, it looks spectacular.

Thanks Martin,

So just to confirm, you are saying that 20.1.2 footage will turn out better than b17 footage after run through Red Alert?

Still trying to get my head around it as I thought it just captured the raw sensor data and all the magic happens in post.

I desperately want to use 20.1.2 and think I will. Just using 5 cameras doing 70 minute single takes makes me nervous. Having said that sounds like 20.1.2 is my best bet.

Cheers,

Jim

As much as I understood it, the R3D raw data recorded is unchanged in built 20 vs built 17.

Installing b20 in canera offers a much more accurate monitoring path with better color under low light/tungsten/skin tones in tune with new color scienceetc (and lots of other improvement to the overall camera functionalities) but the new color science can be applied to older built R3Ds.

You can achieve the exact same final image quality using the new color science in Red Alert but you will need to re-color balance each shot/sequence to get accurate colors.

We're using this exact workflow now on a feature using b17 in camera but doing dailies/offline grading with the new color science.
Will be easier with the official release of built 20 (to preview a better image on set) but right now you don't have to compromise on final quality if you prefer to stay with latest non beta firmware.

Thanks Mikael, that has been my understanding as well.

Still, I suppose the ability to accurately monitor on set has it's benefits. I've been in the situation a few times where I felt the preview image on set actually looked better than fully debayered footage after it's processed, especially when it comes to noise.

Thanks for the advice.

Jim

Shooting build 17 or 20 and Processing with the latest RedCine or RedAlert should yield the same image quality given a proper color correction.

Build 20's been as good as anything for me so far. Shoot that IMHO.
