  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What parts won't work moving from REDOne to Epic?

Okay, there have been a few posts here and there with specifics, but I would love a conclusive answer so we can plan for the upgrade.

Our system is a pretty tricked out one and probably a lot like many people's:

-RED One
-RED 5.6" LCD
-RED EVF
-ET EVF Mount
-ET 19" Hybrid Bridgeplate
-ET Video Breakout Box
-ET Mantis
-4 RED Brick Batteries
-2 RED-Drives
-RED CF Flash Module w 1 x 16Gig card, 2 x 8Gig cards
-Lenses (300mm, 18-50, Angenioux 25-250)

Anyone know how much of this will NOT work with Epic? I have not seen a definitive list like this yet.

For instance, it looks like the battery system is all new? If we're trading in our REDOne, are we done with the RED Bricks and chargers? They were not a small expense. Is RED doing any type of trade-in on these or do we just have to take the loss on selling used batts? If so, the cost-to-upgrade, while still good, is definitely more than just the RED cost to upgrade.

Anything else that won't make the transition to Epic?

I'd like to know this too, although I imagine there always be the "everything is subject to change" caveat.

I have held off buying anything else because of this.

Although I'd love more batteries a 16GB cards!

Just not worth the risk.
 
I think most things on your list are likely to work, except the CF module, video breakout, and perhaps you'll need a different bridge plate.

I've read here that the LCD's and EVFs will continue to work. So will the batteries and the Red drives (though there will likely be some higher bitrate formats that the drives won't support.)

It also seems that there will be new accessories available that are lighter weight, smaller, and more functional, and that you'll want to buy those to keep your package current, but not need to.
 
Yeah, Jim and Jarred stated before that the only RED accessories that won't work with the DSMC system are the RED top mounts and the CF module.

The old batteries will just plug into the DSMC via the LEMO cable but won't fit in the nice new compact battery module.

Of course as Jim says everything is subject to change.
 
It seems like everyone buying a REDOne buys a CF Module, no? I wonder if RED will give any credit for this when the camera is returned. I guess it depends on what they are going to do with the used REDOnes. Again, if they're reselling them, it seems like they would go out 99% of the time with the CF Module.

If we are to return it without the CF Module, it seems there will be almost no market to sell it as everyone already has one. Or we would have to wait until this used market gets going, if that's even the plan.

Anyone from RED want to chime in?

The last we heard about the EPIC X deal for current RED One owners is that it comes with a CF module so that shouldn't be an issue.
 
Justin, that misses the point. If it's not part of the trade-in AND a new one comes with the Epic, everyone is going to be stuck with a $500 useless CF module.
 
Pretty much everyone I know got a topmount as well.

The big question is what will RED be doing with all of the traded in cameras and it appears they still aren't ready to disclose that.

If they will be donating them to filmschools or something then I wouldn't be surprised if they offered to buy back the the CF modules and top mounts at a discounted rate. Just speculation though.
 
I think it is silly to think RED is planning on "donating" these to anyone! These are and will be very much cutting edge technology cameras, even when we send them back. Maybe I'm crazy, but there is obviously a decent value to a used RED One market out there., even with Epic and Scarlet in the mix.
 
I agree that they will still be cutting edge cameras but I think if they resell them it will have to be at a drastically reduced price.

Personally I would chose the $7,000 S35 or $2,500 2/3" Scarlet brains over a RED One at almost any price (I know that doesn't include any modules). At what price would you chose the RED One over either of those? Everybody has different needs but I'm not convinced there is much of a market for used RED Ones at this point.

If there is a market for used f900s, there is certainly a market for used Red Onces. I know which one I would be getting.

Yeah but Sony isn't coming out with a camera with a better sensor and ergonomic design for less then half the price.

The old RED One will still beat most other cameras out there quality wise but the existence of their own better designed camera system for so cheap is what will make people think twice about paying much for a used RED One. I think RED would have to upgrade the sensor in each used RED One and sell it for much less then $7,000 for it to be attractive to anyone. I would chose the 2/3" Scarlet over the RED One in most situations. If I wanted to go out to 35mm I would have enough money in the budget to buy the S35 Scarlet. That said I'm sure some people will prefer the RED One. I just can't imagine it's many.
