  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What next on RED?

I am +1 here. Whether it's a native mount that we have rigid adapters, like the DSCM3 PL, or a full removable mount.

RF helps with adapted a great deal of lenses. Z-Mount gets us a lot more with more possibilities.

For those who aren't as nerdy on that front. Z-Mount is the shortest flange depth bayonet mount for S35, FF35, and VV. A very interesting difference 4mm makes, but newer Nikon Z, Sony E, L-Mount, and Hasselblad XCD become possible. C-Mount already works within the RF, but it's easier on Z.

And to give a good firm handshake, for the formats typically associated with RF and Z, both Canon and Nikon did a great job on these new mirrorless mounts from a technology standpoint as well as some of the more technical dimensional wiggles when adapting lenses. Specifically the inner diameter of the mount itself.
What are the implications of Z-mount regarding adaptation to LPL?

Cheers.

Yeah, a price drop on the monitor and adding a 5" would be a nice move. No reason that monitor can't be 1500. The kit prices were also updated, with no extra discount for the monitors so that's probably not happening soon.

If my komodo OG smashed to bits tomorrow, I would just get a used OG. If I was buying new, the KX great. But I'm gonna hold off on upgrades cuz I love OG and I think sub 15k VV GS is on the horizon. (Years, don't care).
100% - I love the monitor, but I cannot justify spending that money when I know it's proprietary to DSMC3. I would pay $1500 though because I do really like it, but for nearly $3000, I just cannot justify it personally. That's some serious lens money.

Very doable and there are currently LPL Lens to Z-Mount Body adapters from C7Adapters, Simmod, Fotodiox, etc.

No issues with any currentl lenses I know of as well.

Z mount should be the most versatile mount. If you look at the daimeter and the flange, it should adapt to almost anything while also offering the most flexibility in lens and sensor design options too.

Considering the new announcements by Canon and the latest RED price drops I do have some hope that there might be one final push for some firmware updates on Komodo OG.
Enhancing Autofocus modes would make more sense on a Komodo class camera with a user base that would be more likely to use it.

I sent my request list to RED. Hope they can make something happen.

For OG, I don’t think there is much hope in anything major or even minor coming with firmware. Its a fairly mature product from a firmware/hardware standpoint. KX, I expect to see some updates. This platform is only just over 1.5 years old.

I am very interested in what we’ll see as their first hardware update. I think a KomodoZ would be amazing. But, if you change 1 thing (mount), why not change a few more things. So, there could be a lot of things happening.

I wish stuff could happen faster but man, it takes a long time to bring a product to market so I think we’re in for another 18+ months before that happens. So some firmware updates with some help from the Nikon lads will be fun to see!

Great to see you posting here Scott!
Always enjoy the content on your YouTube channel.

At the very least I would hope something like User pages or horizon line could get eked out with OG.

Yes KX is already very solid.

Provided Nikon supports RED's established trajectory with some options that would have been out of reach given RED's former relatively small corporate size, I'm willing to wait.

Besides in terms of filmmaking, I already feel like there's much more to create and further push with the current gear.

I hope someone finally makes the push for exceeding the dynamic range of Arri sensors, or heck even arri going into the market of owner-operators.

It's about time for some change.

I've been wondering if we might see Panasonic buy Arri at this point, especially after the Arri Log on the Panasonic GH7. Load that up into an 8K Panasonic S-series, EVA-2, or new Varicam and watch the sales. Sony has a comprehensive production path across budget ranges, a move like that from Panasonic would get them one overnight.

I historically liked Panasonic for the Varicam (I have a client that still uses LT and it’s a decent camera) and definitely like what they did with the DVX100 series back in the day
but I would not like to see them or any other camera manufacturer buying Arri.

I’ve heard rumors that Arri may not be in the best shape financially with the current predicament the film industry is in but I truly hope they can get by for the next couple of years similar to what they did with the lean years preceding the release of the Alexa.

I’m making do with this situation with RED and Nikon but I’m generally not a fan of industries going through cycles of mass consolidation.

When a company is bought by another it’s often the disappearance of a potential option that you might miss once it’s gone.

We can see what happened with consolidation in the media industry in the last 30 years (telecommunications act of 96 anyone?) and the results have been very destructive in terms of news, ideas, culture, etc.
Would hate to see something similar happen with tech particularly in filmmaking.
Given the general shape of the economy and the potential buyouts of the already few media conglomerates out there, we’re in a very precarious time... and then there's the Blackrock-Vanguard factor.

Red's sensors come close enough. But, I think that if anyone is going to make cameras that exceed the DR of the Alexa 35, it will be Pentax. Why? Because I like to think outside the box, and they are the only company, I think, that can easily do it. And that does not entail that they will make their own sensors. Just IMHO...

I wonder what the focus would be with such a sensor - DR or resolution? DR is already amazing with the newest sensors, but you could go a bit more with more surface area to work with. Or just stay with current DR and give 12-14K of resolution. Of course this is all academic, but it's fun to speculate.
I would hope for either 4 vraptor s35 or komodo sensors stitched together in a quadrant config so there's your answer

Hmmm...

V-Raptor s35 - 8K 17:9
Format Size = 26.21x13.82mm (29.63mm image circle)
Format Resolution = 8192x4320 (35.39 megapixels)
Max Data Rates Up to 800 MB/s

Multiplied x4 -

V-Raptor LF - 32K 17:9
Format Size = 104.84x55.28mm (118.52mm image circle)
Format Resolution = 32768x17280(566.23 megapixels)
Max Data Rates Up to 3200 MB/s

And -

Komodo-X - 6K 17:9
Format Size = 27.03x14.25mm (30.56mm image circle)
Format Resolution = 6144x3240 (19.91 megapixels)
Max Data Rates Up to 560 MB/s

Multiplied x4 -

Komodo-X LF- 24K 17:9
Format Size = 108.12x57mm (122.22mm image circle)
Format Resolution = 24576x12960(318.50 megapixels)
Max Data Rates Up to 2240 MB/s

As I understand it, it would require using Large Format lenses to get image circles capable of covering sensors that large (the current ones multiplied by 4).

And the data rates...

Shouldn't be a problem.

Bring it on I say (even as I continue to grapple with and get amazed by the capabilities of the previous generations of RED camera's).

And thanks to Phil for the numbers btw -

6x7 lenses should work. Bronica and Mamiya made 6x7 cameras. Fujifilm also made a 6x8 camera.

Well if it comes to that, maybe Nikon themselves could cinevise some of their own Large Format Nikkor lenses to pair with their 24K Komodo's and 32K Raptors.
