My logitech from 8 years ago finally died and I am looking for a new mouse, something solid and accurate and WIRED because I don't like dealing with dongles and batteries and reception.

Which ones are you guys using? Aside from day to day use I'd need it for lightweight editing/grading that doesnt need a control panel, and general data wrangling stuff. I can't stand my macbooks trackpad unless I have to use it.

I was looking at the Zowie FK due to its adjustable DPI settings and no-nonsense design, but wanted to chime into the RU community to see if there are any favorites

I cant give you any advice on a mouse, but just wanted to say, I haven't used a mouse in years, since moving to a tablet my productivity and speed has doubled.
It is especially quick when working across two screens, I was really hesitant at first but will never look back.

yep stylus the way to go for most things. Still find for more clunky things a very simple mouse is usefull.

Yeah im planning to get one of those monitor-tablets (wacom cintiq HD, etc) because I do a lot of title credits and graphic design and that would really augment my workflow

I don't think I've had a mouse on my computer is 12 years. Wacom tablet all the way! Great for editing, it's amazing for making masks in Davinci. You get used to the relationship with the screen, and your right there, no scrolling or other crap. Track pads are painful too, but better then a mouse.

Wish that programs would include gestures (Red Team)!!!!! Anyone who has ever used a Discreet Flame?Inferno would understand. Love how I could delete something by throwing it off the screen.

I typically use Logitech mice, usually from their MX series. And Wacom tablets as well, agree with Christopher about the Wacom mouse on the tablet, yuck. The multi-touch touchpads from Apple are great though. Hard to do precise detail work with them in the way we can with a more traditional mouse (at least a good one) or a Wacom stylus, but for general computing I can whip around on my Macbook Pro with the touchpad just fine. Especially with most all the gestures enabled. Can't stand the Apple Magic mouse with its multi-touch surface. And I have even less love for the new Logitech and Microsoft mice that have employed the same design. It's an OK idea, but I don't find any of them to be ergonomically friendly, especially when we have to go from using it like a mouse to trying to do touch stuff on top of it and the stupid things often want to scroll or flip pages on me when I'm trying to do other things.

Also have to say the Razer gaming mice are pretty good, if you find one that fits you. For a corded mouse, I like the Razers as well as the Logitech ones. I also have to say that HP had a pretty decent mouse included (wired along with wired keyboard) with the Z820. But It's in the box as I"m using a Logitech K750 solar keyboard and a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse on that system along with a Wacom Intuous3.

I've got money on stand-by for a Wacom Cintiq as soon as they ship with a "retina" or higher resolution display.

Another vote for Wacom Cintiq (HD)

Thanks for the advice guys :)
Yeah I am 100% down for a wacom cintiq but right now its kinda out of my budget, by the time they come out with a "retina" version I'll probably have enough money saved

Been using R.A.T. 5 mice for about a year now. http://www.cyborggaming.com/prod/rat5.htm

They're pretty nice, and the side scroll was actually more useful than I originally thought. As I also play games quite often, I think I clicked it a little too much and the left mouse button lost it's click, so I'm questioning the durability of the switches they use. Still, nice mice overall.

I've also started using a Mionix Naos 8200 now. http://mionix.net/products/naos-8200/

Great ergonomics and feels rock solid. Both of these mice have on the fly adjustable dpi, which can be very useful. The Rat also has 3 programmable profiles so you can quickly switch depending on which program you're using.

Big fan of the Apple Magic Trackpad:

I did away with the battery powering and drilled a hole in the back and powered it from a wired 9VDC adapter, so it never runs down. It's been flawless so far.

Are there any tablet exercises I can start doing to get more efficient with them? I see their massive potential, but I really suck with them... Honestly I'd love to start getting into concept art--nothing amazing, just decent (and quick).

Used excellent Logitech MX series but allergies started developing with Mac OS and its ridiculous cursor lag/wobbly feel. Moved on with Wacom and its mouse, until that one died. Tried "Magic" one, but its "magic" was innovation void of reason, as mouse needs to slip over the surface nicely and touch pad must not at all, and the middle works for neither.

After that I gave up expecting the existence of perfect tail-less non-Apple mice on OS, and the instant realistic feedback as on a PC, and using simple Logitech one combined with Wacom stylus.

Try re-mapping the hand movement range/surface in its preferences. Once you hit the perfect ratio to your personal feel, things improve noticeably.

Been using R.A.T. 5 mice for about a year now. http://www.cyborggaming.com/prod/rat5.htm

I also use a R.A.T.

I have surprisingly large hands given my height. Not gorilla-hands, just long fingers. I bought a normal Razer mouse, and it was too short (lengthwise) and made my hand cramp. I then bought one of the Apple touch-mice, and while it's great in theory, I wish it was another finger-length wide. It, too, made my hand cramp.

So I got annoyed and bought a R.A.T., since you can adjust the width, length, weight, and angles. I don't use most of the button functionality of it, though there are some great features.

I also love the look of the thing.

However.

If I take it to set, inevitably, at least 5 people will say something like "what the hell is THAT?!" or "What happened to your mouse?!". Strangely, I love when non-camera-types ask "what the hell is THAT?!" about my camera. But I hate it when it's about my mouse. I think because I'm *proud* of my camera, but I only use this mouse because most other mice make my hand cramp.

So, in other words, really great mouse. But people *will* ask you about it if you use it within view. So just be aware of that.

For editing and GFX work, however, tablet FTW. I don't understand how anyone can use a tablet for a few weeks and then say "Nope. Not for me." I mean, I know there are those that do, but I just . . . don't get it.

Loving all the feedback!

One more thing...who is using the RED workmat? Is it large enough to hold a 15" MBP and mouse on the right side, acting as a mousepad + laptop platform?

Same sort of problem. Got cramps using the magic mouse at work, same thing with a friends Razer, and couldn't stand the other cheap mice lying around at work. This one looked awesome, and is far more comfortable than it looks, and has some features that you might not use, but are great to have available.

You are absolutely right about other people commenting on it. People ask about my "Transformer Mouse" all the time. They seem to forget about it and say the same thing a few weeks later. So if you don't want comments about your computer peripherals, don't get this mouse. ;)

I guess I'm one of those people you don't understand, cause I just haven't figured out tablets yet. Maybe it's because I change computers at work so often that I never get enough time to figure out the best settings for me. Everyone else uses them exclusively, almost being completely confused when they have to use a mouse. Guess I just need to spend more time with them or get one of my own.
