What is Peter Jackson going to do with all of those Epics?

We all know Peter Jackson bought 48 RED Epics for The Hobbit, so, wouldn't it be cool if they were all for sale at the RED.com store as Battle-Tested? (Well, more like Middle Earth Battle Tested)

Not sure if they would be going for cheap because they were involved in one of the biggest digitally shot projects to date, but just throwing it out there. PJ might just keep them all since he's named them already, and they wouldn't even make a dent in recuperation costs since the price drop... oh well.

I think collectors will pick them up and there will be huge bids for them. Might be great for charity. Sure plenty of folks would pay a premium for the official camera (might even surpass the original cost). Think of it like Michael Jackson's glove, or Batman's cowl. I remember Chaplin's camera sold for a huge sum. Cha Ching!

Perhaps he'll send them in for an upgrade when the Dragon is released? I'm sure he'll have plenty more epic projects (pardon the pun) in the future.

But yeah, I would LOVE to own a camera that had been used by my hero. :)

He might even use a bunch of them to build a hemispherical fly's mosaic eye array of cameras with fixed lenses to shoot controlled action drama for planetarium or Imax projection. ( Actors and directors had better lift their game. ) I could be kidding myself too.

It's not the same as MJ's glove or Batman's cowl. For example, equal items would be a speaker used in one of MJ's concert or a computer used to edit one of the Batman films.

wonder if he had to actually buy them?

Maybe, But my guess is that he probably paid more just for the prostatic noses used in the film than what those epics cost list price. 48 cameras bodies might seem very expansive but my guess is that those epics is less than a few procents of the total cost for his camera gear. As when you add on lenses FF systems, tripods, dollies, 3D rigs, gyro heads, moco systems, wire cams, chopper rigs etc. it is all coming at much higher prices. Especially the advanced stuff that he only rents... Then if you add the lightning budget to the above those epics are about the same price range as the sandbags. :)

I would guess that mosts of the cameras are loaned to him for free and in return PJ promotes RED.

So that the camera company goes bankrupt but at least got some marketing out of it. Sounds very likely... ;)

But really, why would Peter Jackson want them for free? Only if you support the company that makes the tools you like you can have them flourish and create even better tools or perfect the existing ones. Not so much, if you have them give away the stuff for free. And 1.5M isn't that much all in all for such a huge production. Maybe he got a volume discount :)

By the way... a little birdie told me that all of the Epics are now being rented out at a rental house in NZ. Looks like they'll never be sold to the public... oh well.

My guess is 60 Epics still cost less than the combined film stock and processing costs for Lord Of The Rings!

Give them to the crew as door prizes!

Well, I guess he will use them once again for additional shooting period of The Hobbit: There and Back Again, then send the bodies for Dragon upgrade. Having extra bodies might be useful for his big production company. I don't think James Cameron is selling his 50-something pack anytime soon, too.
