  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What is a DSMC2 Base I/O V-Lock Expander ?

This module really makes me reconsider my plans to stick with my REDVOLTS (+XLs) and just get a few more for RAVEN. Anton Bauer CINE and PAGlink are great options...

From what's been revealed it's the same as the Weapon Base Expander in the store, with the addition of a V-Lock plate built into the rear of the Expander. An all in one solution.

Hey Phil! Thank you for this. Do you think the V-lock plate will be removable? Based on the pictures it looks like there are screws there but I'm not sure if they simply go all the way through to the body.

Modularity can indeed be a bit confusing if you're coming from other systems.

They way the DSMC2 Base Expander works is you can attach something like the DSCM2 REDVOLT XL Module or the Element Technica V-Lock Module.

The V-Lock Base Expander will likely have the V-Lock hard built into the module. It would be pointless to release two of the same product essentially.

We'll have to get ET to update their website with a new image of the D-Tap that's on top of their V-Lock and G-Lock modules. That's a wicked old picture.

The most flexible system is using the Base Expander and rig out from there, but remember they do make V-Lock to G-Lock plates that can convert if you are using Anton Bauer Gold Mounts. If you plan on using REDVOLT XLs, you'll want to go the route of the Base Expander without the V-Lock. I've been using those a fair amount on Weapon, surprisingly so actually. Having somewhere between 4 and 8 of those makes life pretty easy and keeps the camera small. My big honking V-Locks are heavier than the camera. I can run most studios shoots with 2 or 3 of those.

Ah that's unfortunate! It looks like the regular DMC2 base that you have is about 1/2 the thickness of this new one with the V-Lock mount. Because I plan on using the Raven almost exclusively on the (fairly small) Letus Helix Jr (and powering it using the gimbal batteries or perhaps a belt mounted v-mount), my main concern is to minimize the length and weight of the camera. It almost makes sense not to buy either package and just buy the regular base expander. Not sure how that will work out price-wise but what matters is that it works in the first place.

can someone point me to a usable system that will be available BEFORE march, i.e. something from element technica or offhollywood. How much will their systems cost compared to the 1750$ Weapon one?

Depending on what you need, the jetpack expander is the cheapest at the moment which is made mainly for gimbal, etc. lightweight use with DC in.

DC IN (6-Pin 1B LEMO socket)
HDMI 1.2 output (Type A socket), 60 Hz max frame rate
USB Power output (Type A socket), 1.0 A
SYNC (Genlock IN / Timecode IN / Sync IN) (4-Pin 00B LEMO socket)
CTRL (Tally OUT / RS-232 Rx and Tx) (4-Pin 00B LEMO socket)

The only thing which I find a bit confusing is why the will over a fixed V-Mount but not a fixed REDVOLT option with the base extender.
Probably because V Mount is mored widely spread and also because V Mounts are already heavy by themselves. But still.

OH man, where's the facepalm emoticon?

I can rationalize why they wanted I/O out of the brain (HDMIs burnt out quite a bit when using wireless, no longer require surgery to replace when boards die, upgrade to 4k+ output module whenever its ready, etc), but, c'mon; no way to power the camera? That's ghetto...

Does that mean the least expensive way to actually be able to turn on the camera is a $950USD jetpack? Good grief...

Mike, I feel ya. But there's a real practical advantage to doing it this way. If you bend a pin or in any other way pull out or break the power I/O I'd rather have a $1K module to send in or replace than the camera brain. Since all the contacts on the brain are flat contacts to accept pogo pins, the brain is less likely to be "mishandled" and damaged. So although it seems weird at first, I see it as a good thing.

I was wondering about modularity as well with this new modul. Does this module have to be attached to the body directly or could you place other modules in between?
Just asking since we don't know what kind of modules there will be in the future. And you don't want to see yourself reinvesting in the DSMC2 Base Expander just to be able to use other modules as well. Especially if you take the step up to a Weapon at some point...

That's why I feel something like the ET V-Lock Module or XL Module is a smart move. They are just battery modules and can be used on the camera by themselves even or on top of whatever Expanders come in the future.

My game plan is (as of now):
- DSCM2 Base Expander (compact and pretty much living on my Weapon so far, gives me basic I/O)
- REDVOLT Expander (Has the full size XLR ports with Phantom Power, additional SDI, REDVOLT hotswap, etc..)
- XL Module (been using this mostly for smaller rigged shoots)
- ET V-Lock Module (been using this mostly for full day run shoots)

Phil, can you go all handheld photography style, omitting the base I/O and just attaching the XL or V mount module directly to the BRAIN?

Thanks but I need hd-sdi at least for a monitor. What is the current cheapest Pre-March availability solution for an expander that has HD-Sdi (not just HDMI)? And this might be stupid question but how do you mount a battery to the jetpack expander?

@Phil
That sounds like a plan.
But I really like the DSMC2 Base I/O V-Lock Expander sinde it has D-Tap and USB, which is going to power my Paralinx Arrow.
I really like to have a clean and compact setup wihtout having too many cables haning around. And having the USB out is going to help with that.
Do you know whether you can place modules in between the brain nad the DSMC2 Base I/O V-Lock Expander ? Or does it have to be attached t the camera diretcly?

@ Peter Dmitriyev
The only solution I see for now is to get the DSMC2 Base Expander and a Redvolt XL module or a ET V-Lock plate. Not really cheap but if time is of the essence than that's the way to go I guess.
The jetpack expander does not mount a batterie to the brain diretcly. It hase a DC-in for your AC-power cable or the DSMC BATTERY BELT CLIP ( http://www.red.com/store/products/battery-belt-clip-dsmc ) which comes with the Raven Jetpack Package. The idea is to take as much weight off the camera rig (or gimbal) and place it on the gimbal handles or your belt, etc.

Would make the camera smaller if you go this route too so I wonder this as well.

how do bricks compare to xl's with raven? coming from 6k/5k shooting, i imagine the batteries drain a bit faster than they would when shooting 4k on a raven.

i use bricks but converting to xl for raven is appealing to me for the weight factor..
