  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What EVF res. numbers are shipping now?

103 received EVF last friday ...
125 has not received email yet ...

just now got email notice on Red Nikon mount ...

Hey Donatello,

Congrats! How is it? You like? Still have your camera? ;)

i have to say that the EVF does make it feel ( could be Psychological ) more like a film camera and it is so much better when viewing outside/inside ...
IMO it is a MUST have for hand holding !!!
also have the ET EVF mount = much easier to adjust then the 5" Red arm ...

i still have firmware 13 loaded in = no problems - solid ....

FYI, Build 15 has some color setting enhancements for the EVF in it, too. So, if you have your EVF (or are getting it soon) it will be even more pleasing once you are running Build 15.

cams 107/107 got EVF last week. VERY cool piece of gear.

Brent- if we are still on build 12 (we are in the middle of a feature) and observe the color on the EVF to be a bit 'off,' is that to be expected?

BTW- it's sharp as a tack!!!

#121 evf has arrived

#121 evf has arrived

just slapped on my evf for red 121. very solid...and heavy.

image looks crisp but i won't know until i hit daylight tomorrow for a test shoot.

a few issues:

does anyone else notice the intense flicker especially during pans. it's very intense, more so than just a 24fps whip pan. and much more noticeable than the lcd flicker (lcd ficker is barely noticeable). i just wondered if there is some kind of refresh rate i could adjust in the evf.

also, i'm seeing crazy rainbow colorwheel effect when my eye hunts quickly around the evf image. it looks exactly like the older colorwheels in dlp projectors. i know that some eyes are more sensitive to this than others but has anyone else experienced this?

neither of these things are that bad. they are just a little distracting. i suppose i will get used to them but i would prefer to find out that i simply need to push that magic button (the one that does nothing on the side of the evf) to fix these minor issues.

I got my EVF today.

So where can I learn more about the EVF?

What is Dark Detail?

I get the rainbow effect when I dart my eyes around as well. If you check that feature "OPEN GATE" it fixes the stuttering "problem", but then you forgo the nice frame rate. It kind of makes the viewfinder look like you are in varispeed mode (super smooth / 60 frames per second-esque)

Yeah, there are nice color enhancements to EVF in Build 15.

For some more EVF info, see "Viewfinder Menu" of Ops Guide. Dark Detail allows EVF to view additional info in dark areas of a scene or in a lowlight night scene.

10 per week!?!

At that rate I'll get mine in 2010. At least I'll have the dandy Element Technica mount to use as a cable hook...

Ramp it up, guys!

Good shooting and best regards to all,

Would be really great to get a aprox. schedule for the EVF´s or a number how many per month are likely to ship...

please RED :)

Unfortunately the lack of EVFs in the world are leading some people (admittedly ill-informed people) to assume the Red is a camera system that doesn't have an eyepiece (I kid you not!) - they think that it's operated via mini monitors instead. We demo the camera to a LOT of features & commercials production companies as well as individual producers, directors & DPs and we hear a lot of misinformation from them, especially producers who pick up little snippets here & there - they know what the benefits of the camera are (no stock & processing etc) but they also want to know what the drawbacks are and, believe it or not, many think one of the drawbacks is that it's a camera that doesn't have a traditional eyepiece. Obviously this situation will be rectified with time as EVF production ramps up and orders catch up but in the meantime unfortunately it's obviously damaging Red's good reputation.

Hi Dave,

Cinema cameras have traditionally have had optical viewfinders, it's even an option for the SI camera..
