  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What EVF res. numbers are shipping now?

it will be into next year before they even hit 1100 and next NAB before they hit even half the cameras sold. If that.

Hi Dave,

Cinema cameras have traditionally have had optical viewfinders, it's even an option for the SI camera..

Stephen

Don't forget the D20! What I meant by "traditional" is the form factor of an "eyepiece" (be it optical or video) to operate with as opposed to a mini monitor to operate with, which unfortunately is what some mislead people are assuming happens with the Red (we're doing everything we can to dispel such myths but it's difficult when you don't actually have the EVF...it's just words and there are no firm delivery dates you can give potential clients).

EVF Alternatives??

EVF Alternatives??

With the well documented shortage of Red EVF's in the world, and the seeming trickle of new ones coming out, has anyone heard of any viable third party alternatives to the Red EVF? Had my first rental with our camera today, and the biggest gripe was that focus on a daylight exterior shoot had to be pulled off the LCD w/hoodman. Lots of long lens stuff at wide open T-stops. Not a pretty experience for the AC or DP. Accuscene out of Scotland is supposedly making the Red EVF. They are known for their high quality electronic viewfinders. Maybe another model by them could be adapter?

Stephen you're such a film camera buff hahahahaa. You always sound like some of the camera technicians at ARRI. Haaahaha.

Well hopefully P+S technik might be able to give us an optical VF??? Who knows? It would be nice, just in time for Epic :weight_lift: .

Why weren't they pulling focus like film people have been doing for a 100 years--with a tape measure and some skills?

Anyone from Red want to step in and let us know where we stand on EVF delivery?

They were all professionals of the highest caliber. When you're on a 400mm with a doubler, on a moving object running tape isn't an option. It was also an "aggressive" shooting schedule with lots of setups/locations, so having a nice ultra sharp EVF would have been nice.

As far as I know, Accuscene does not exist anymore. Jim bought them and David Macintosh, who was the brains behind the Accuscene viewfinder, now works for Red and is the key player responsible for the Red EVF. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

be patient, they're doing their best

Not any one ?

It's NAB, give them a break. Anyhow, it's been talked about on this forum before, do a search, producion is ramping up, although I suspect not as fast as they would like. I'm No 500 and was told I should get mine before the end of May. Just check here occasionnaly :

and wait till NAB blows over before asking for personal responses.

Cheers,

Ciao Ketch, great to hear yours came... My eyes are peeled for the fedex truck... I hear that filmtools in Burbank makes an eye cushion for the Red EVF for around $45

Haha, I hope it wasn't the doorbell, because I just missed it if it was!

Seriously though.. waiting for this EVF is like waiting for my Red all over again..

How do you like yours Ketch?

BTW, $45 does seem pretty steep for something that costs between $3-$8 .. hrm

Well I'll let you know asap as I used:w00t:

And yes, agreed, it has been so for me too, waiting for the RED EVF. has been like or similar as it was when waiting for the camera.

This EVF's really rock, and I sure hope they don't change at all for the EPIC.

The guys at Filmtools don't seem to know anything about an eyepiece for $45. but they do have the ones for $5.45.

I'll get some Round Large Chamois ones for the time been.

ciao

Maybe I misunderstood the $45 for $5.45, hahaha, oh well , have fun Ketch!

Yeah, I'm sure you did!

Any way I ordered ten of them from B&H at $3.95 each!

My fun for the next few days will have to be put at side as I have three Motion Picture Treatments and one TV Treatment to prepare.:weight_lift: :weight_lift:

ciao

Mine showed up in FedEx today.
Camera #344.
Cheers,
Harry

Hi Dave,

steven, you have been misinformed.

In the recent decade, traditional cinema cameras, as HDCAM from Sony, Panavision or Thomson Grass Valley used electronic viewfinders.

This is done to overcome the inherent design disadvantages and flaws of optical viewfinders, which would be :
- loss of light.
- the inability of monitoring the recorded signal, which is considered cruicial by several dps, directors and producers
- the pure absence of any successful digital camera using an optical viewfinder design. Only badselling and/or discontinued products, as the Arri D20 were *only* using optical designs.

I included a short list of digital full features which where successful in cinemas in the recent decade which used EVFs. Feel free to enhance the list by the ones i missed.

Furthermore, one should be aware that in the 35mm marketspace, still a slight minority of the sold cameras are based on the mechanical design approach - these typically have to use OVFs.
