  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What do you hate about your EPIC?

Nothing that I hate, just a list of welcome improvements:

2. Magnify 1:1 while recording
3. HD-SDI port difficult to access
5. Menus not showing on HDMI and HDMI outputs after firmware upgrade when touch screen not connected
just another short-visit to second these three at least (plus Audio - but I can live with it as it was def. a form-factor decision as far as i understand it [just like Apple going lightning connector because of the phone/iPad heights])!

What I hate most about my epic? It's a scarlet! Haha

But besides the audio, fan, flip monitor and front heaviness for most hand held work. I wouldn't buy any other camera, to me it perfect.

Many valid constructive criticisms here.
I have one: on top of the fan delay times after cutting, I wish they could ramp up slowly instead of starting all of the sudden. On many shoots I have 3 cameras, and I had the talent startled more than once.

The unspoken truth is that when all is considered and compared, the RED One is one heck of a camera.
I completely agree. I mentioned it in a different thread, but man was I happy when the BT R1 became available. Its quiet, runs the bomb evf without flicker
and the 7inch LCD with less banding simultaneously, it has a hard on/off switch, plenty of connectors and is well balanced with movie zooms.
Plus I love the Hard drive option and the SSD Side. Integrates reasonable well with other gear and doesn't require all those bolts to put it together.
I compared the footage between the R1 and my Epic and found the difference minimal. Obviously the Epics strength is the slow motion and the weight.
The Epic is like the 435 and the R1 like a LT. The biggest draw back on both is the viewing system. Focus shifts on long lens pans are impossible to
execute by eye. I wished RED would have continued the R1 as a R2 Studio with dual SSDs, Prores Proxies etc.. It would have had a chance outside
the 3D Productions.

+1 on the erase last clip. +2 on the undo erase last clip (i.e. have the footage resume recording elsewhere on the card till it must erase that clip...) if this is possible.

I love my camera, for improvement, some valuable thought already said it here.I have only one.if the camera can switch it to 50mhz and 60mhz .that is great.Even my little Nikon 800e has it .
Thanks
Sunil Prem

OK, I'm going to say I don't think this is going to be very productive, sounds a bit grade school. "Let's all say what we HATE about Johnny." Seriously? I can think of better ways to foster constructive criticism, but a "pile on" thread is counterproductive.

It is productive - they are just about to release a new Dragon version, and the powers at Red read this forum.

I don't know - Epic at 5K , 3:1 - 5:1 compared to Red One at 4K 16:9 Recode 42?

I can see a huge difference, even scaled to 1080p. Then start doing secondary color corrections - the Epic footage tears anything else to pieces.

But do you think they are going to change the physical camera at this point? Any complaints should be addressed in the complaint section and any suggestions should be addressed whenever they announce a new form factor... IMO.

Constructive criticism is always welcomed by RED. They have listened to many comments and suggestions even made by little ol' me. And I know Mike wasn't trying to start a flame against RED; he is a fireman after all. But nobody appreciates when someone comes into their home and then starts to complain about why did you choose THAT color of paint? And what on EARTH made you decide to go with THOSE cabinets?

The folks at RED are super about listening to us, they're the best in the business when it comes to heeding their customer's needs. But even RED appreciates a considerate approach.

Don't like where the 3.5mm audio inputs are. Especially don't like where the EVF/LCD plug is on the brain as it gets in the way of changing lenses. Really need a battery plate that can power the camera through the dock instead of a lemo. I know it's possible since you can power the camera with the quad battery mod.

It's all in the approach. If it remains civil and intended to offer RED a cohesive thread about some of the things people would like to see improved in future versions I think it's a good way to do so.

What I would change is the thread title. I would call it: What Can RED Do To Improve Epic?

The way the title is now, it brings a negative vibe on title alone. But the thread itself so far is constructive. Professional feedback will bring professional response from RED.

I'd like it if they did loaner brains when your camera dies so that you don't get slowed down or need to pay a rental house... While I understand rental houses are a good alternative sometimes the budgets not there and that's why they went to an owner/op in the first place for their shoot.. Packaged deal for a low budget indy or what have you, for someone not on the tier many of you are... People like that will just get another owner op rather than pay rental house msrp. Thankfully this is my first time having it brick out on me, but I totally need to cancel this gig now, but its whatever I mean cost of business... I'm not going to flip out like a brat, I am too much a fan boy to ever pull some stupid bs like that...its just kind of is ironic since i am such a supporter and always like to brag about the other red my boss owns with 1,200 hours and no problems lol...

I will reserve judgement about the fan situation until seeing the new design implemented. I do think the noise in standby can be an issue.

Because these cameras are used for markets beyond just cinema, where double system is still king, I would like to see improvements to the audio components as people have mentioned. I think feedback from location sound recordists should be given some priority on how to better interface with their gear.

More flexibility in monitoring paths would be welcomed. Having multiple looks on various outputs would be great.

I'm sure i can come up with a lot more, but brain is fried at the moment so it won't be tonight.

I SIMPLY HATE THAT IT DOESNT COME WITH A PONY.

Love shooting on my Epic.

Audio inputs need fixing. Mini-XLR's would be a godsend.
black Noise level - I really don't like the noise at ISO 800 on this camera under tungsten lighting. It's fine under daylight sources
Fan noise - That cannot be fixed soon enough. But will my Lightweight 15mm adapter still work with the new fan?
I hate that people don't want to shoot on it, because it's too much resolution and our edit bays are all based off of 2006 and 2008 Mac Pros. (Come on Apple!!!!)
I don't mind the power. Bricks are just fine with a volt in the handle.
I hate that we've been talking about Dragon for 3 years and it still isn't here.
I REALLY HATE that it's now $10,000 for Dragon.

But I do love shooting on it. I love editing on my personal hackintosh.
I love grading the footage (if it isn't too noisy)

Which is *precisely* why I said "don't say anything you wouldn't say to Jim or Jarred, face to face". Jim came up to me at NAB last year and asked 'What do you think of the camera? How could we do better?' and that's what was in my mind when I started this thread. Keep it going guys, this is what I hoped for. Keep it polite and constructive.

This isn't a home, you see, this is a business. And right here you have a bunch of people who thrash the product half to death in the course of their work, and are willing - nay, happy - to come here and provide feedback. That's *pure gold*. Many businesses would kill for this kind of feedback, at no cost beyond that of running the forum.

A satisfied customer is a good thing. The next best thing is one who will take the time to tell you what could be better. Someone who is *both* is best of all :-)

Mike, a very satisfied customer.

Fair comment. The title was intended to be a bit cheeky and provocative, get people to read... then the intro was intended to make sure people didn't take the title too seriously or evince a bad attitude! :-)

But there's a grain of truth in the title too... there's always product ideas, people things feel could be usefully included. This thread was intended have a slightly different emphasis: to find out what actually gripes people about what's already there in the camera; what doesn't work as well as RED hoped and intended, what causes issues in production, what causes people to blow takes or loose footage.

Mike
