  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What do you hate about your EPIC?

What really turns me off is the arrogant attitude. Also how Red is the only company that publicly pits itself against other camera companies as if they were "wrong" - The whole 1080, 2k, blah blah blah nonsense is old.

They kinda have to in order to stop giants like SONY from trying to co-opt their IP and history and make it their own. For me as a customer, I'm very pleased when they work to tell the world that MY EPIC is the finest camera in the world. '-}

That reflects very favorably on me and my business decision to buy RED cameras.

It's a trap! ;-)

points of improvement could be:

- Thumbnail overview for playback
- in camera deleting of clips
- internal prores recording or a prores module that also records high fps
- instant image magnify that doesn't also magnify on the hd-sdi (make this a option) and magnify during recording
- body weight, lighter is always better, make the next camera from some sort strong yet really lightweight material
- lack of xlr's
- lack of a second hd-sdi port
- ports placement, hard to reach with all the ports so close to each other.
- power usage, the less power is uses the better :)
- no good viewfinder option, red should just like arri have real stellar viewfinder, the oled and lcos are not good enough
- integrated topplate, would be nice if the brain would already have the cheesplate kind of holes so you don't need to add a topplate
- loud fans, but has been addressed
- would be nice to have the option to pass 15mm lws bars under the camera, so a new camera body which allows this would be nice for light setups
- working and reliable redmote
- image flip on the touch lcd

But seriously. Jarred, if you're reading this - could you just make the audio holes in the fan cover plate larger so that the existing thread on the 3.5mm sockets is accessible. Such a simple fix for the connector gripe.

Standard threaded locking ring connectors would then fit (RED could sell these in place of the current 3.5mm to XLR on the store) and nobody could complain about the connector at all... after all the locking ring 3.5mm to XLRs I use came straight off Senny radio mics - totally professional.

No hate here, but +1 on the 3.5mm connectors. When Epic was being developed and it became apparent that they Red was going to go with mini-jacks, I made a suggestion at NAB to someone on the Red team (don't remember his name) that if there wasn't enough room for mini-xlr then at the very least a locking screw-on ring connector like Sennheiser uses on their wireless would be preferable. He said that's a good idea, and actually made a note of it on a notepad. Didn't make it into the mix though. If min-xlr is not possible, then please make locking ring connectors possible with the new fan housing! I hope the new fans really solve the fan noise issue.

LOVE my Epic...

My number one complaint with the Epic is the rolling shutter, which is why I am so looking forward to the motion mount. A very distant second would be the fan noise. What I would love to see in future upgrades (as mentioned by many others) is a thumbnail preview and the ability to delete clips. Yes, I would love to see my revolts last longer and of course I would love to have a more reliable Redmote but none of this stopped me from loving my Epic the way it is.

I wish Red did more joint ventures, and created new modules more rapidly. I now bought the teradek bolt pro. (wireless HD and 2 receivers) I would pay double for that thing if it was put inside something that looked like the +1 module.... So if red does not like to play that close to others I think they still should let third party manufacturers get the pinout for power on the back of the cameras. then We could make our own modules and not get the clutter of things we now deal with. Third party units that Nicely connected on the back of the epic or other red modules with the same mechanism would make the epic sell a lot more I think and atract more users and make more attractive / possible configurations.

Also I want a XXXL Redvolt, a redvolt that we can put in the bat quad and run from all day. Do not care how big it needs to be just make the camera solid for 8 hours or so.

For what its worth, the screw on connectors fit just fine and work perfectly if you're the kind of person who'll happily take a drill press to the fan cover plate and open the socket holes out for clearance ;)

The monitor spaz-out every time I switch to 1:1 mode, that needs to be addressed and corrected so it's just BAM, and it's on, BAM and it's off. The monitor flip definitely needs addressing so it's not backwards, that's just plain silly.
I'll second that. As well as inconvenient it's embarrassing.

Inconsistent LEMO alignment.
The red dot that helps you align the multi-pinned, rugged-looking but actually fragile LEMO plugs are positioned at:
9 o clock for power input on brain
4 o clock for monitor in on brain
3 o clock on 5" LCD touch screen.
How hard would it be to standardise this? Particularly when you can't see the dot very easily on some of the socket collars.....

No biggie,
Just yell "checking the gate" "gate checked" or such and all remains calm....

Not sure if I like the way this thread is headed with the word "HATE" headlined... negative words like that ,ake it the camera is a disaster, when it fact its the complete opposite.

I personally don't "hate" anything about the camera. I'm still grateful someone got of there arse and made it for us.
However... Silly threads like this may piss the big man off, are still helpful for them in the long term as they plan into the future.

After looking through all these posts, the same old things keep raising there heads.

Audio jacks + Audio Amp control (to at least R1 standards) ... and not needing a module to fix the problem, as we all want the cameras to stay small.

RED VOLT Power consumption... and not wanting a module with 4 red volts in it to fix the problem. as we all want the cameras to stay small.

Input power connection and output HDSDI and HDMI in an annoying position... and not wanting a module to fix the problem.

Me personally... The weight, It's still to heavy even in stripped down mode. And I know this could never be fixed at all with its current shape, materials and size, unless technology allows Red to make a smaller lighter version. So thats some time away Im sure. if ever. But Don't really care. Petty I know.
+1 Audio Amp control (to at least R1 standards)

thats about that.
More than happy with the other 98% of the camera.

Cost of media. If it were cheaper (like a 1/3 cheaper) I'd buy a few more cards. I'm sure a number of other red owners would be in the same boat as me. With cheaper media, REd would sell more and recover R&D cost on them. Media costs from what I can tell prevents a lot of new comers coming to red.

I used to say power management, but it's much better now. Still room for better, but thanks for addressing it.

However to add, I still take my red over any other camera, best camera I have owed, it's more then I ever wished for. I used to spend a lot of time looking at the new camera on the market, I've stopped looking these days.

No way I'd use "hate" in describing what I'd like to see improved in the Epic. I love shooting with it and will continue being "all in". However, it's hard to ignore glaring shortcomings to the system.
In order:
1-EVF OLED cannot be trusted...this is the most important item to be fixed as this directly impacts lighting, focus, and to some extent exposure.
2-Touch Screen, both 9" and 5" not as sharp as it should be (unless focus assist is on)
3-I sure wish the low light capabilities were better (waiting for Dragon)
Other issues mentioned in the thread are minor, IMO, anyway.

I hate the fucking redvolts lasting 30mins like everyone else.
I hate the fucking...Yeup that's all I hate^ lmao am I the only person that loves the weight of the epic?
